Village headman shot, severely injured in Yala
By The Nation

YALA: -- A village headman was shot and severely injured while riding his motorcycle in Yala’s Bannang Sata district on Tuesday night but he managed to fire back and scare the assailants away, police said.

Hamah Museh, 50, head of Moo 4 village in Tambon Tanoh Puteh of Bannang Sata, was shot three times on his back by a pillion rider while he was riding his motorcycle to pray at a local mosque on Tuesday night.

After being shot, Hamah stopped his motorcycle, lay down and returned fire. Police said the two assailants abandoned their black Suzuki motorcycle and fled on foot into the darkness.

The village headman was rushed to the Bannang Sata hospital for preliminary treatment and later moved to the Yala provincial hospital.

So, the two assailants had a gun or guns and so did the village headman while he was riding his motor cycle.  What a stroke of luck!

Yes, village headmen have to carry guns in the red zones....

It is part of the job description. All village headmen have to carry handguns and wear their caps and bullet proof vests facing backwards.
