Tourism operators putting on a brave face as "plankton bloom" moves onto Koh Larn

PATTAYA: -- Thai news media reported that worried tourism operators were putting on a brave face as the phenomenon known as plankton bloom moved from Pattaya itself to the outlying island of Koh Larn.

 

Tnews said that a one square kilometer area of Ta Yai beach was largely empty of tourists who were unwilling to go into the bright green sea for fear of getting skin diseases and allergies.

 

They quoted a tourism operator who said he hoped that it wouldn't last long as it was tough times at the moment and they could do without plankton causing more trouble.

 

The unnamed operator claimed it was a yearly event that didn't usually last long. It happened at the start of the rainy season usually, he said.

 

He claimed the phenomenon - known as whale pooh in Thai - can cause skin problems to those susceptible to such things.

 

Tnews reported that most of the Chinese in the area were not risking a dip in the green sea - and things were decidedly quiet.

Probably because its not raw sewage. its a Plankton bloom.

Happens in oceans all over the world

One of the variables for plankton blooms  besides water temp.are nutrients in the water.

Yes, as the OP states, It happens after rain when lots of nutrients are introduced from runoff.

Lol!!..tourists feared the water due to disease?...

 

One could be tempted to speculate that chances of contracting STD or other disease would be higher on Short or Long Time with the bar girls rather then the beach?

This is just the beginning of the problems with algae bloom,nothing is being done to treat the conditions for the bloom to occur,stupid to think this is just a once in a decade thing......time to empty the toilet that the Thai Golf has become.

That's right it's not just rain runoff ( that hasn't produced this type bloom in past ) it is sewage / nitrogen. Essential limiting element for plants : central element in chloraphyll / photosynthesis.

Pattaya and Jomtien are nightly dumps for ALL raw sewage.  They have NO sewage treatment.  They should line both beaches with signs but they make a lot of money in the pharmacies selling antibiotics!

Yeah, that will treat about 1/100th of all Pattaya's and outlying areas sewage.  Read an earlier article where the authorities admit that if it was running at 100% efficiency it would treat 20%.   Have a nice swim and watch for those antibiotics coupons.
