Finding a new dog.

Featured Replies

I've had a few dogs during my time here and recently lost my last one, a Black Labrador. I'd happily adopt a street/soi puppy but to be honest they are no fun. I've had them in the past and they never want to go for a walk. They won't swim at the beach. All they do is laze around all day waiting to be fed. Does that remind you of anyone?

What I want is a Labrador or Golden type of dog but, now because of my increasing age, one of a smaller variety. I don't think I can handle 30kgs anymore and would prefer something that maxes out at say 15. It must like walking and swimming as exercise is important for me and having a dog that needs the same forces me to exercise along with it.

I live in a house and have a small garden although I would expect the dog to be a house dog NOT a yard dog. It should also not be of the yappy kind. It does not need to be a guard dog although a single bark to warn me someone is at the gate is nice. My last two dogs managed this perfectly.

I've heard of Labradoodles and Goldendoodles but have not tracked any down as yet. I'm a little concerned at size as it depends on which type of poodle the Lab or Golden is cross-bred with. Some poodle are very large. I don't know about the mechanics of crossing a miniature or toy poodle with a dog that is 4 times its size. Someone on Facebook asked about a Great Dane-Chihuahua cross. Without Artificial insemination the mind boggles at that.

So to get to the crux: any help in finding a suitable puppy, preferably female, would be appreciated.

Where are you ?
The soi dog foundation in Phuket is a good place to try.
They have loads of puppies that need housing.

I've got a Goldmaraner (Weimaraner x Golden Retriever )she loves walking and barks if someone approaches the house. She's 30 kg at 12 months old. There is a breeder in northern Thailand for whippets (try searching for whippet club of thailand on Facebook). There's also a place in Chiang Rai that breeds Border Collies (Chiang Rai Sheep dogs). Both Whippets and Border Collies like walking and they are a bit smaller than a lab or a golden.

Pattaya. Not interested in a soi puppy. I gave my reasons why.

Border collies are great. Very energetic, would I ever be able to keep up?

Whippet, done some research and there seems to be some doubt about their swimming capabilities.

Both are now under consideration but I'd still rather a Lab or Golden cross-breed. Thoroughbreds can have health problems due to inbreeding.

Thanks

when we moved to thailand perminently i made freinds with the neighbours dog.we more or less looked after him and gave him the life he deserved.good little guard dog, plenty of energy, very lovable, loved to go for walks, sadly he died from parasite disease 2yrs.ago.

even when he had no strength to walk he still barked at stangers,so i would recomend this type.

i cant post photo's myself but there is a picture of one on PAGE 2,POSTED 5TH JUNE,

TOPIC SOMEONE TO LOOK AFTER A SMALL BREED DOG.posted by standeesamui.

R.I.P.DODO 2002 TO 28th. june 2015 NEVER TO BE FORGOTON.

good hunting keesters.

I find what is written about a breed's characteristics isn't always 100% true. I have an English Bull Terrier and they are supposed to not like swimming and can be dog aggressive. Mine loves swimming and isn't the least bit dog aggressive. I used to have a labrador in Thailand (now sadly passed away at 11 years) and she hated swimming and was very dog aggressive. I guess it depends on the individual dog

Just out of interest
Do western breed pet shop dogs know how to tackle giant centipedes, snakes and scorpions ?
Always wondered about that !
My two soi dogs are obviously of german breed but with a bit of street built in ! IMG_2803.JPGIMG_2803.JPG

Actually turned out to be father and son ![emoji846]

I haven't got any dogs from a pet shop! As I don't live upcountry on a farm I don't have much of a problem with snakes & scorpions! I think a Jack Russell Terrier will be equally adept as your hairy duo in tackling critters!

or a west highland terrier.

My English bull terrier is fine with everything,  he barks at snakes but has caught many things even pinning down a scorpion

Maybe not 100% but close. For the Golden's and Labradors I've had and others I've met it has always been 100%.

Don't care. Not interested in soi dogs/puppies. Stop hijacking the thread.

What ?

I was just asking as i was interested to know
No hijacking here mate !

I had a cocker spaniel crossed with something (not sure what) from a local market, good size 10-15 kilos loved swimming, running, chasing cats and barking at strangers.  Very friendly and intelligent dog.

Get a poodle keesters - sounds just up your street !IMG_1480.PNG

Adopted soi dogs aren't interested in going for walks :shock1:?!

Rubbish, I've adopted 4 - and they all love/d going for a walk!

One who was v ill (not expected to survive more than a month when I adopted him) took me completely by suprise when -  (sick as he was) - after a couple of days he followed us, determined to join the walk .

edit - I'd add that two of my adopted soi dogs love/d paddling about in the sea, although admittedly not keen on going out of their depth.

Agreed - GSD soi dog cross shorthaired bought from Soi Buakhow market would go for walks/run all day long and swim in the sea/Maprachan lake to retrieve thrown sticks/coconuts. Not sure where the OP's experience comes from here.

or a west highland terrier.

OR a Carin Terrier .. same animal as a Westland.. but, not white. I have had 5 of them while growing up. I love those little dogs.
