We adtopted a cute if bedraggled female dog when we moved here to Pattaya. She promptly produced a litter of five. We managed to home two after weeks of advertising, both in supermarkets and newspapers. So we were left with mother and three pups, all adorable.

When taking the mother to be neutered locally, the vet pronounced she was pregnant again, and refused to perform a hysterectomy/abortion. I believe it was to do with Budhist beliefs. We tried every vet in Pattaya and beyond.

She eventually produced another beautiful litter, this time seven. We homed six miraculously, again after hours and days of advertising.

Then a tiny bundle of runt managed to get into our garden, looking more like a half eaten rat than a pup. But pup she was. We nurtured her slowly back to health, and now she is our beloved little 'Mouse' - best little guard dog in Thailand, whose howls would wake the dead.

Now we must move. Short notice. Fast. Hardly time to pack. Very little time to advertise and impossible to take even one of our fabulous family of loyal pets with us.

I am beside myself to know what to to do. Being menopausal and constantly weepy just got a whole lot worse.

I just cant dump them at a temple, the temple dogs look the worst to me, scabby, mangy and in terribly poor condidtion.

So what is the answer? Be grateful they had a short but very kind life and try to find a vet who will painlessly euthenise them? Turn them out on the streets to become street dogs and doubtlessly fail to survive after being so spoiled?

I once before had to have an old and sick companion dog to sleep, a vet visited the house and it was tranquil, painless, calm and not distressing for the dog. She slipped away hearing me telling her what a good girl she was and she was finally out of pain.

Is there anyone out there that knows of someone like this? A ministering vet who would help in this way?

I look back on rescuing and homing these poor creatures now and wonder if it was all worth it. Xanex and Zoloft cannot stop me from constantly weeping.

I am hoping for a Thai Visa angel with fingers firmly crossed. Meanwhile I will post their pictures on the 'Pets For Free Forum' again.

It is highly unlikely you will find a vet in Thailand willing to euthanize animals who are not terminally ill. Vets here do not euthanize on demand nor usually just because an animal is growing old or is ill or disabled; they have to be actively and irrevocably dying and even then it can be hard tio find someone to do it.

In any case I urge you not to do anything you will later regret. You have done a great good by caring for these dogs so far.

I appreciate your difficulty. Some sugegstions if no one steps forward to take them in:

- talk to your Thai neighbors/staff -- and perhaps farang acquaintances too -- about whether they would take them temporaily if you provide the food (can easily get very large bags of dried dog feed) so as to allow you more time to find homes. Having just been through this with cats, I know that one can usually find homes but it does take time and patience.

-- if this fails, cotact the Soi Dog rescue folk (don't know if they are in Pattaya but they are in Bkk), they take in strays and put them up for adoption.

-- keep posting on TV and do add pix. Assume the mother has now been neutered. Guaranteeing to pay for neutering the pups when they come of age will help place them (assume they are too young to have been neutered yet).

Good luck! You have acted from compassion, keep doing so and have faith that the result will be good in the long run, whatever challenges the immediate present may hold.

Hi Dear Sheryl

Thank you for your encouraging reply. Guess I am feeling so low today, but will persist with photos, posters, newspaper adverts. Alas, we do not know many people here, having only been here a short while. All of the dogs have been neutered, vaccinated, wormed regularly, and are all healthy happy and house trained. Oldest is mum (my son named her Caesar as he is a Rome fanatic). Youngest is Sox's Sister who loves to swim in our pool.

I tried desperately to home our much loved Golden Retriever in Spain before we came here, but nobody wanted her, she was 8 years old, and slightly worn out but well cared for and much loved. I cant imagine going through that again, this time with young, healthy, intelligent and happy dogs. Just breaks my heart. I will plug on, and try to keep positive about it all.

Thanks again for your wonderful advice.

On the other thing: hope you got my PM re meet Bkk. Around 9th? We will fit in entirely with you. Hubby says we are coming back from HH via the West so anywhere would suit us. Just LMK.

Kind Regards and Warm Thanks to you Sheryl. Hope your project is going well.

EFL:

1) Additional thought -- try posting in the Northeast forum, becuase people living there tend to have large tracts of land, which is what you need..someone with enough space that they can absorb a bunch of dogs, at least temporarily, without much problem.

2) Yes I got your PM and have been trying to reply but can't seem to send any PMs to anyone -- keep getting IE error message. Not sure if problem with my server or what. Anyhow -- 9th is fine for me or alternately if it turns out to be more convenient for you I will probably be flying back to Cambodia on the 14th around 6 PM could meet at airport. Either way works for me.

I'll try to PM again when I have access to a broadband server.

Keep your spirits up...you are doing the right thing and that always works out well in the end even though there can be a rough ride in the interim!

English Farang Lady,

PM me if you still need to get somewhere for them. We'll take them & try to find homes (Hua Hin Dog Rescue Center) if you can get them to Hua Hin. I hate to see healthy dogs put to sleep. I can also email you to keep you updated of how they're doing.

Please note (everyone else) this is a one-off, I don't usually take in dogs like this (I have other criteria), but EFL has tried really hard to get her dogs a home, so I'm making an exception. Thanks :o

I am overwhelmed with tears of joy by the many supporting, helpful and generally wonderful replies I have received concerning the unexpected re-homing of our six adortable rescued dogs.

We are in Hua Hin now, getting number one son settled into university, and go back to Pattaya on Tuesday.

We have received a message from someone in North East Issan who will take two of the dogs - Mouse and Mrs Sethna, which is wonderful.

But that still leaves Socks (the only boy), Sister, Caesar (mum), Elvis. November Rain - I dont know what to say. How kind you are. But you obviously have your hands full, so we will continue trying our best to home the remaining four. But if all else fails, we would be very happy to bring the remaining dogs to Hua Hin. And we will give a substantial donation as I think the work you do in HuaHin is exemplary.

All our dogs are well cared for, healthy, neutered/spayed etc, and have all been brought up as companion dogs. It will break my heart to give them away but we have no choice.

And thanks to wonderful Sheryl, something I had not thought of. Will post on the other forum. We will deliver them (and supplies of everything they need) virtually anywhere, to ensure them a good home.

To the lady Elfe who kindly replied - I cannot understand how you can cope with so many. But what a wonderful person you are, and I was so happy to get your message. We were discussing loving pets and why people do love pets so much, and it is my belief that pets love their human companions unconditionally, whereas humans mostly love with conditions attached. Except perhaps for the love of a mother for her children.

Those people who replied so helpfully have restored my faith in humans - my sincere thanks to all.
