Analysts: Thailand Taking Bet on Legalizing Casinos

By Ron Corben

BANGKOK — More than 80 years after Thailand introduced gambling laws, analysts say the nation is betting on legalizing casinos in hopes of boosting tourism and being a player in regional casino development. Gambling in Thailand is officially banned, apart from the state-run lottery and betting on horses at the Bangkok Turf Club; but, illegal betting and underground casinos have proliferated.

Visanu Vongsinsirikul, a lecturer in economics at Dhurakij Pandit University, and a specialist in the gaming industry, said a decision on casino gambling is likely after the next general elections, expected in late 2018.

“After the election this issue [of the casinos] will be raised again. When the election passes it means the government has the rights of the [electorate]. So the government will dare to make a decision about this. I’m quite sure that Thailand will have a legal casino, they will have in the near future,” Visanu told VOA.

There is lots of gambling going on in Thailand so may as well make it legal and tax it. Use that tax to make sure people are aware of how bad it can be and help others with gambling addiction.

Saying all that - that tax money ain't going no nowhere except for a few big pockets. Same as everything here.

1 in 3 odds

1 in 4 odds

3 in 5 odds

5 in 7 odds

And don't forget we are offering a steak dinner buffet

Yes they are forming at the mouth as to how they are losing billions of baht to Cambodia, Macau and Singapore etc due to false doctrines.  Thaksin Shinawatra proposed the change but obviously did not get any support. Offshore banking for the receipt of corrupt payments are getting more and more digitally traceable yet cash in the casino is still one of the better ways of laundering ill-gotten gains. Completely in line with Thailand's corruption index ranking so anticipate we shall see legalised gambling in 5 years.  Of course they will be military run no doubt.

This would be a solid tourism move. Right now there is nothing here to bring in big spenders except the easy sex industry and a few decent hotels. Casino action would bring in spemders .

Its got to be a proper casino or  if its just slots and black jack it will just destroy the locals life who is a nickle slot player.

Proper meaning having craps tables and a vegas type system.

I like it.

There is at least one place I have seen in Pattaya, where the downstairs is already set up as a casino, just waiting for the starting gun. Gambling is coming to Thailand for sure.

i heard that loyde williams a casino owner from australia has bought into the ambassador hotel in pattaya in the hopes of converting it into a casino. one part of it looks like it would make a gaming floor.  like everyone says might as well legalize it. can do prostitution as well while they are at it.

Billions flowing outside the country because of their medieval ways and all the elite jumping in their planes to make other countries rich. Madness!  better to keep it here and help improve the economy by taxing it but maybe they don't want to hurt lottery ticket sales... oh hang on they don't have gambling here right?

So he's betting that there will be elections in 2018, he will soon learn that you also can lose.

Keep that urban legend going.

It also has been a secret for years that the old Batman disco was completely setup already, just waiting for the law to come in place.

And then .......................this picture was posted of how the Batman disco interior looks today

A friend was talking about this yesterday and he thinks the casinos will be between Pattaya and Rayong, maybe somewhere like Ban Chang. U Tapao is expanding all the time and from next year Qatar Airways will be flying there so it won't be long till Emirates does.

Gambling will be first, then liquor licensing will be relaxed, especially hours and import duties, then drugs will be legalized.

This will increase the tax raised and pay for the counseling and regulatory regime necessary.

Can't be a bad thing if the corruption can be reduced to a manageable level.

Thailand is practically surrounded by countries with casino and Thais are spoiled for choice to go to Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines or Indonesia for their fix. We got to wrest the stranglehold of illegal casinos owned by the police and military chiefs for legitimate legalized casinos.

No way will a foreigner be allowed in. Any casino licence will be held by people "connected" to the government. Just to make sure money doesn't slip through the cracks to go into undeserving pockets. It is the right of every country to protect it's own domestic corruption from outside corruptors.

Hi guess most here do not know the history of gambling in Thailand and why the ban was imposed by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn.... short memories will pay in the longer term.

Keep the ban and uphold the memory of The Great King, I say!!!
