Tetra Pak aims for 50% market growth in SE Asia by 2020

BANGKOK: -- Tetra Pak is aiming for a 50-per-cent increase its food processing business in South Asia, East Asia and Oceania by 2020 and has named Thailand as one of the key growth countries.

 

The firm said in a press release on Wednesday that it is committed to supporting Thai producers and government initiatives to expand the “food innovation and agro-processing industries” under the Thailand 4.0 scheme.

 

“The Thailand 4.0 development plan includes ‘efficient agriculture’ and ‘food innovation’ as part of its 10 targeted industries set for development,” Tetra Pak noted. 

 

“This is part of the government’s ‘Super Cluster’ policy to develop the processing of agricultural products to create high-value foods, such as geriatric nutrition and functional foods. 

 

“With roughly 40 per cent of Thai population working in the agricultural sector and food exports in the first quarter of 2016 increasing by 9.5 per cent compared to the previous year, the demands from local producers for new technology that helps maintaining the highest food-safety standards, while optimising operational performance, have been rising steadily.”

 

Thailand has thus been chosen as one of Tetra Pak’s focus markets in the region. The company recently showcased its latest food processing and packaging solutions at ProPak Asia 2017.

 

They included Tetra Pak High Shear Mixer, which it said offered “unparalleled ingredient-mixing performance” and lower operating costs while helping cut energy consumption by up to 50 per cent as part of the overall process.

 

Homogeniser 500 is a UHT unit for heat treatment and dairy processing lines. The automated One Tetra Pak Plant Master allows customers to manage end-to-end operations from raw-material reception to finished packaged and palletised products.

 

“Thailand and the Asia region are key growth areas for Tetra Pak,” said Ashish Dahiya, in charge of cluster marketing for the region. “Rising middle-class populations, urbanisation and diversified consumer needs are the main drivers behind the high demand for food-processing innovations. 

 

“Our core expertise in dairy, prepared foods, ice cream and beverages, together with the fully integrated solutions, are the unique offerings that will help move customer’s growth forward, together.”

 

The growth ambition of 50 per cent by 2020 will potentially add 100 new jobs to Tetra Pak’s regional processing operations team, which currently has 800 employees. 

 

In 2016, Tetra Pak Global recorded 11.4 billion euro (Bt440 billion) in total net sales from its fully integrated solutions, with 76,000 processing units in operation.
