More checkpoints to be set up on minor roads during New Year

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has instructed local administrations to set up more checkpoints on minor roads as statistics shows that road accidents have increased on these roads when compared with the same period of the previous year.

Director-General of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department Anucha Mokkhavesa (อนุชา โมกขเวส) said officials and volunteers monitoring road safety in Chaing Mai and Phuket provinces had received a good cooperation from commuters during the previous two days. The road accident prevention centers in the two provinces have proactively campaigned against road accidents during this New Year break.

Mr Anucha also reported that most accident victims are local people more than tourists. As a result, aside from the setting up of more checkpoints on minor roads, he had instructed local administrations across the country to focus on enforcing road safety measures for commuters in each locality.
