Looking for Eldercare / assistant, where?

Good day,

Can anyone suggest where to find eldercare people? In my case, I want to hire someone to elder-sit my father 5-10hrs a day. He's healthy but just needs some diversion/entertainment, and someone to motivate him to move around a bit. I can pay well, but I am at a loss as to where to search. (Ideally the assistant(s) will have a good command of English, as he's a former scientist, and remains quite interested in art/politics/science/history, etc. but they need not be on that level, just speaking decent English would be adequate.)

Thank you!

There was recently a lengthy discussion about this topic on the "Health & Medicine" forum.  I could not find it in search but maybe the moderator, Sheryl can locate it.

Mod.  Suggest moving this topic to Health and Medicine

Believe you will have a very hard time finding anyone trained and speaking high level English as this is not something Thailand does to any extent.  Almost all care is family provided here rather than as an occupation.  Would normally suggest hospital nursing pool but few will have that high English skills and they are fully employed as always a shortage and a high demand.  Suspect you will have to get word out and offer a very attractive salary.

Your best bet would be a Filipino. There are many here in Thailand in domestic roles, English is generally quite good and they are also usually caring and responsible people. Place ad on Craigslist requesting same and you will likely get some response

I knew one lady who had some training and spoke fine english years ago in Pattaya that actually cared for two el der folks.  She also was the house massage on call girl, and even did laundry.  What a sweetheart hard working person.   My friend introduced me to a lady that owned two salons and massage places, one under some hotel on 3rd Road as I recall.  She said her sister owned a medical pharmacy medical supply store. Being of some age we kind of talked about care giving and said her sister could arrange things like that.  So, I am suggesting ask around at a reputable medical place.  You may get some leads.  Sorry, don't have anything more concrete.  I would think that by now that some hospitals or even clinics would have some sort of out patient care program.

" Costs for in-home care can vary greatly depending on the amount of care the individual requires. Full time caregivers without a nursing degree can be hired for as little as 8000-10,000 baht per month (USD$225-280) in Chiang Mai. The cost for a full-time registered nurse would be closer to 20,000 baht per month (USD$560). When you increase the requirement to that of a live-in qualified nurse available 24/7 or a qualified nurse with excellent English language skills, then you would be looking at closer to 35,000 baht per month (USD$1,000). "

Of course I am sure one can get some local to care for less than that.  But as far as trusting and knowledgable, ask around. Some of the expat clubs may have some contacts. Lots of us old folks living there now and you no doubt are not the only one asking about this topic.

It would be helpful if you noted your location. If he is healthy and just needs some diversion, might he be better served finding someone to escort him to outside activities if he is not capable of going on his own? It sounds like he might just need something to do. If you are near an expat community, they frequently have groups... good luck.

Depending on your budget and the need for him to be actually staying with you, you could take a trip to inspect Vivo bene Village in Doi Saket. I stayed overnight there a few months back and found it to be excellent in all respects - professionally run, very good food, friendly staff, and useful medical supervision if needed - nurses and occupational therapists. It's about 20 Km from the centre, but the surroundings are very nice countryside. Doi Saket town is about 10 mins away by car, and it has basic infrastructure - banking, post office etc. When I was there, they operated a shuttle bus to town several times a day, probably still do. If so, shopping, getting out and about etc. is not a problem. He should also have some company among other guests. Anyway, hope you find a suitable solution.

My wife's daughter provided care for an Aussie man for a couple of years.    He went back to OZ for primary medical care.  She says she will be going to Phuket soon looking for a job.  She speaks very good English and is no dummy.  Send me a message if you are interested in interviewing her.

Maybe some luck with Filipino or Burmese ? Met many who speak excellant English and have quite good educations. It would be an idea to contact them through the internet or word of mouth , they usually have a grape wine  of contacts with their own people.
