Officials from the General Department of Immigration’s investigation and procedure department cooperated with Phnom Penh municipal police and local authorities yesterday to arrest 31 Chinese nationals accused of using internet phone calls to scam their compatriots in China. Uk Haiseila, chief of investigations at the Interior Ministry’s immigration department, led strikes on three locations yesterday morning.

“Those Chinese people are involved with extorting money through Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) scams back in China,” he said, adding that Phnom Penh Municipal Court helped coordinate the operation. Mr Haiseila said coalition forces descended on three separate locations, including Phnom Penh Helina Hotel in Boeung Keng Kang III commune, where eight people were arrested.

The second location was at the Phnom Penh Mekong View Tower in Chroy Changvar commune, where 18 people were arrested. Lastly, forces raided a room at the Phnom Penh Diamond Apartment in Boeung Prolit commune, arresting five people. “The police have sent the 31 Chinese nationals, including nine women, to the General Department of Immigration to begin legal procedures because they allegedly extorted money,” he said.
