No, the US State Department cannot fix everything for every nationality.

What they can do, however, is produce a passport that will survive a momentary dunk in a puddle.

I went swimming while wearing my money belt once. Passport had zero issues once dried.

You obviously havent read tbe thread in particular the one abbout going to the Yank embassy as the guy is Australian. So put your claws away for now.

My passport was water damaged once when i was caught in a rainstorm to the point you could not make out the photo. Interestingly i went through Thai immigration going back to australia then entered and exited australia the back to Thailand without issue. If the passport is machine readable your photo will appear on the IO screen anyway, The immigration guys in Australia and Thailand just told me to get a new one ASAP.

Let's hear more about the mud puddle incident.   Did she toss it in and stomp it?   My USA passport expires next year so I guess 9 years old but I swear it could take a power washing at the car wash and not look different.

It seems he answered that in his OP.

I fell in the mud at the Poipet/cambodian border. My passport got muddy, but i got through cambodian authorities and then thailand immigration looked closely at my passport and stamped it with a 30 day visa.

I washed my Aust passport, (well I didnt, but the result was the same) the info page was a bit damaged, and the entry was stamp was a bit washed out. I sent a scan to the Oz embassy who sent a letter saying it was ok to use. As I was leaving to return to Perth, Immigration werent worried.

At Perth, the passport was confiscated, as it was damaged, but you cant be stopped entering if you are Assie and can prove it (driving licence would do).

Hi guys, thanks for the big response, hopefully ill be able to get to the australian embassy tomorrow and tell you what they say, i'll keep you all updated, im leaving for Bangkok in the morning. Its amazing how such a thing as this can ruin a holiday. I forgot to add that i dont have to be back in australia, so if things went wrong i was thinking one option if denied at the airport is getting a visa extension and then thats how i would get the new passport and not be staying in thailand illegally.

currently im thinking that i'll go and try to get on my flight and then if rejected, as my visa will still be valid for 2 days, go to thai immigration for an extension, because Ubonjoe said that the airport officials certainly wouldn't take my passport away and would just tell me to get a new one.

Shaurene - as Yetanother says, from what ive been reading online, each immigration office "is its own little silo", i get the impression they do what they want and are kind of independant from other official thai authorities.

Csabo - i would put a picture up but i felt it might be illegal to put pictures of your passport, of any page online, im really dont want to do anything illegal.

Brittim - yes you are right, it has a page in the middle of the passport that is hard and like cardboard, i think the chip lives in there and that has not been damaged, that far into the passport only the corners are damaged with dirt.

the australian embassy in thailand webpage, says the australian embassy is moving on the 31st to a new location, hopefully someones made a thread abou that for aussies as i think its moving a couple of kilometres away.

but their website says you need to have your birth certificate, they really do make it sound difficult to get a passport. but also they talk about exceptional circumstances assistance so i'll just see what they have to say tomorrow. http://thailand.embassy.gov.au/bkok/Consular_P2.html
"Under some circumstances a limited-validity Emergency Passport or other type of travel document may be issued to facilitate urgent travel to Australia. "

Old lakey - the australian passport photo page has hollograms of kangaroos all over it which appear to the eye when you move the passport around, these kangaroos are over the photo aswell, so i can see the kangaroo holograms moving over my photo, which i think would make inserting a fake photo next to impossible, as you would have to lift up the plastic, insert a photo and then reapply the plastic and get those holograms working.

Lancelot - im flying wth scoot and staying in transit in singapore as im flying scoot singapore to gold coast also. I'll be in transit lounge for about 10 hours.

Elkski - yes unfortunately i went to the casino at poipet because i needed the toilet, i think i had to show my passport at the casino so it was in my pocket as i walked about the 100m walk to cambodian immigration, i was stupid and didnt put it back in the protective plastic casing the Australian passport comes with, unfortunately i slipped at the railroad crossing and all my bags are coated in dirt, my clothes were coated in mud, i must have looked a mess. I also ended up playing at the casino and so they bought all these free beers to me for playing, so by the time i got to cambodian immigration i must have looked a mess and smelt of alcohol,  i was told to get a hotel for the night and come back the next day. So i went through cambodian and thai immigrations the next morning. I will be stone sober when i go to the airport and dressed in a nice shirt and long dress pants and remain as calm and polite as a monk if questioned further, ive read that manners and respect are very important in these situations and that losing your cool is enough for them to make the outcome turn out very differently.

I've definately learnt my lesson about taking care of your passport, thats for sure!!
thanks guys, ill keep you updated.

Had a similar but probably much worse problem a few years ago.  Passport was in a belly bag and I got caught in a heavy downpour as l was riding a motorcycle.  The passport was soaked and l completely forgot about it for several days.  Once I remembered l tried to open it only to find many pages were stuck together as one,  most of the stamps were either totally gone or illegible.  I emailed the Aussie embassy in bkk and the response was to send a scan of the photo page.  I then received a reply that since the photo was just about legible they would issue a letter saying that after examining the passport they considered it to be usable.  They did say that they suggested the passport be replaced when convenient.  I used it until expiry,  got an ear bashing from a few immigration officers but the only real hassle was on leaving Australia,  the grumpy p....k there didn't want to allow me out and called a supervisor. The letter from the embassy fixed the problem,  but it was a toss up until l asked who had the highest authority,  the embassy in bkk or the grump in immigration..  So don't stress out

Thanks Thaidrew

I went to the Australian Embassy in Bangkok this morning. I just got back and saw your post and they did the same for me. They photocopied it and put a stamp on it, and also gave me an A4 sized invoice with Australian coat of arms all over it. The lady seemed to think i would be ok without the photocopied page with the stamp on it, but i didnt want to take any chances. It cost me 1760 baht.

Considering a new passport is 7000 baht before any extra fees they want to put on top for sending it overseas, ill just wait until i get home and get a new passport.

thanks everyone for replying, ill let you know how i go getting home and if everything goes smoothly. Arriving home on the 4th of August hopefully.
