The first half of 2017 saw a spike in nationwide crimes compared to the same period last year, a National Police report released yesterday showed. National Police Commissioner Neth Savoeun presided over an annual meeting yesterday that included the release of the report and was attended by 24 provincial police chiefs and other police officials.

According to the report, there was a five percent increase in the number of cases handled by police across the country in the first half of 2017 when compared to the first half of 2016. The largest spike came in misdemeanour crimes across the country, which saw an 11 percent spike, according to the report. Felonies, meanwhile, saw a 13 percent decrease.

“Crimes increased five percent,” the report said. “But felonies decreased a suitable 13 percent.” The report singled out 13 provinces that were to blame for the spike in crimes, including Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Cham, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Thom, Kampot, Kandal, Preah Vihear, Prey Veng, Pursat, Ratanakkiri, Takeo, Oddar Meanchey and Kep.
