BANGKOK: -- A post on Facebook reported by Manager has warned Thais thinking of going to South Korea to make sure that everything is in order before they leave Thailand.

Rungrangsri Park warned Thais living, visiting and preparing to come to Korea that the authorities are getting tough.

Even minor infractions such as using cars and motorbikes without a license are causing big problems for people in the country, she said.

And people who fall foul of the law can expect serious penalties within the country. It is not just a question of being repatriated to Thailand - Korean authorities are cracking down at the moment, she claimed.

People are being refused entry and blacklisted for past infractions, she said.

Some 20,000 Thais are thought to be living in South Korea and many of them are working illegally there making life difficult for bona fide tourists.

She said that the Koreans have strict laws and Thais thinking of breaking the law better watch out or their future could be over.

She claimed there was a 100 day crackdown in progress as other individuals posted stories of being refused entry and having problems in the country.

Maybe it's the Thais' definition of 'minor infraction' that's a problem for them there. You're not allowed to drive without the proper license. Welcome to a 21st century country.

This would have been a better way to word this.

why would a lack of respect for one's own country's laws NOT spill over into another country ?

Agree, Thais do not know the meaning of the term "law enforcement" . One of my Thai relatives just got a lesson on that one, working illegally as a spray-painter in the automotive industry. Result: payment of tax and social insurance arrears and a hefty fine, 2 weeks in detention and banned from entering South Korea for 5 years. No jail term this time. Total gain for living illegally, in very low standards, for months was 2,000THB net.

P.S. It's not all about just massage services...

The South Korean government appears to have been reading up on the Thai military Immigration Handbook. Seems they have picked up a few pointers and are giving back the Thais some of their own medicine.

What?  Someone from the Land Of Extreme Visa Enforcement would allow a citizen to stay in a foreign country without a proper visa?  No doubt Thai nationals are raking South Korea over the coals from being so demanding with their immigration policies.
Thais driving like Thais will more than likely catch the attention of a police force who monitor vehicles for moving violations.  Let the games begin.  "How's that shoe feel now that it's on the other foot?"

A friend of mine was arrested and deported for not having their passport with them when caught in a raid at a Thai restaurant. She got a bit snippy with the guy, that did not help. PNG stamp in her passport!

The way in which Thailand treats foreigners in general, I'm not surprised more countries could also start to scrutinize Thais more closely. What's good for the Goose, is certainly good for the Gander.

What do you expect from them?

They have never learned to respect the law

When there is unfair, and uneven implementation of the law, based on your position in society, and how a policeman feels, and what his needs are at any given moment, you do not learn to respect the law. What is there to respect here? The toy police do not command any respect. They have not earned any respect. It is not about public safety. It is about revenue collection. They should be called the RCA. The revenue collection agency.

And yes, they do implement the law in other countries. Thais should be warned about this by their own government before they leave. We do not use the law here. We really do not have enough concern for the public to do so. We are indifferent. But, since you are leaving the country, we are making you aware that other countries care. And they do apply the law. So be prepared.
