RICEBERRY brand registration by foreign company not affecting Thai rice exports: DIP

BANGKOK, 7 August 2017 (NNT) – The registration of RICEBERRY as a trademark by a private foreign company will not affect the exports of Thai rice berry products, says DIP.

The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) Director-General Thosapone Dansuputra has said regarding the registration of RICEBERRY as a trademark by a foreign private company will not affect Thai rice berry exports. However the rice berry products will have to be marketed under a different trademark.

On the other hand, the name Rice Berry has also been registered as a trademark by the Rice Science Center & Rice Gene Discovery unit of Kasetsat University under the patient numbers 821133 , 821134 , 821135, and 821136, covering 30 kinds of rice products. This would prevent other companies from registering the word rice berry as trademark in Thailand.
