Only 5.

Is that even enough for one ship

It's not for a ship. It's for New Year.

Remains to be seen how they will launch one from a long-tail boat on a Bangkok canal.

Considering the price of these things it will be just about enough to sink 5 Indonesian trawlers around Langkawi.

Actual cost just US$ 1.2 million each - information from this source.

So I guess this answers the question of "why".

I think they must be for the new submarine, whenever it arrives, as they only get four torpedoes included-in-the-price with that ?

Strange that an ex PM is in court for 'wasting' money on a rice scheme that benefited poor farmers, who does this waste benefit?

Getting prepared for the next clamp down on Pattaya Walking Street signs all down  ‘or else ‘

The 'cost' Vs price paid is no real surprise. The Chinese APCs on order show a list price in 2014 $ (admittedly base model) of $320,000. Cost to this country - almost exactly USD$2m EACH!

In my opinion, this is all about showing solidarity with the US, regarding current issues in the region. They will probably never use the missiles but it will do no harm to US/Thai relations.

Probably we shall see disaster in another dimension at the military storage. Well, accident is only a 500 baht fine, same goes to mishandling of missile!

First guess would probably be men with guns.

.....or for a rebellious domestic population, which is historically the only reason why Thailand secures a military presence.

Just saying like.

Hope they can knock out a missile from N Korea

I thought they already had the NGV tanks as unguided missiles!!!!!!

Well for once i am not against this military spending

Harpoon missiles are much more use to the country than submarines.

Using the missiles on a frigate makes sense, updating the ships capabilities.

At almost $5 million a missile I'm glad your not buying  for Australia especially as Thailand will never fire one. Not one, Think how much that money could of helped the homeless and poor in Thailand. What a joke.

You have missed my point about those missiles, i said that they were of more use than submarines.

These guys are out of control. Most Thais want them out. I think if the (gets a bit difficult here) Princess that every Thai loves (not sure if I can say the next bit so I won't) this wouldn't be happening.

So they will save the money by cutting dialysis to Thais on the 30 Baht national health plan who have renal failure as dialysis is too expensive and move the funds to buy subs and missiles.  Hummm.  I'm trying to fathom that.   Nope.  That doesn't compute.

This news does not surprise one bit; Thailand is beset on all sides with threats of a nautical nature.

Are you under the impression Australia isn't buying them?
