Wasn't Taksin's maid technically a millionaire? Where there is a will to hide ill gotten wealth...

Then Thaksin was just a hopeful PM in 2000 and has no clout. The NACC was trying to build a case for whatever reason but really nothing came out of it. Nothing to see there.

Public officials in the USA, the UK and other Western European countries have to declare their investments and assets. It is also illegal for corporate leaders to indulge in bribery to secure major contracts. What the government is proposing probably does not go far enough.

Yes but Prayuth is not subject to the law. He is the law.

Yes, but he can't stay there forever. At least he is doing something sensable for a change in trying to get advice to change it and bring Thailand in line with International standards.

To be fair, he's a surface puppet. Nothing short of....

"International" standards...?

By making it the form one bit of paper instead of two?  What has that got to do with reducing queuing times? Prayuth is uniquely unqualified to bring Thailand in line with international standards on anything, let alone this. He can't even boast being knowledgeable about military affairs. He has never seen a battlefield and would run a mile from one if he ever did. He is the product of his privileged cosseted upbringing and hasn't got a clue about anything.  Nothing.

No international standards but guiding principles provided by Transparency International.

"There are no international standards mandating how asset declarations are made and monitored. However, there are core principles that should form the foundation of any legal framework".

That is why he is seeking the advice of others. Pity you lack the English comprehension to completely what I have written.

There is no International Laws I was talking about. International Standards are the core principals that each individual country follows like those I mentioned. Is there in any harm for Thailand to aspire to this? Certainly not!

Wrong thread  ...  this is the bashing-the-PM-because-he wants-to-make-public-officials-declare-their-assets thread !

IMO quite a reasonable idea, to start trying to do this, then they can try & make the checks more-effective, later on ? :whistling:

Yes William C, what a terrible pity.

How can someone whose wealth is stolen possibly have any credibility in conducting such a thing?  When are the TV junta hugger finally gonna answer the question... why are an elite gang of "soldiers" (totally laughable) so rich?  Why do you lot always hasten to the defense of swine?

Whoa Boy !

I wasn't defending anyone, just pointing out that you were in the wrong thread, for commenting on the new TM6-form.

And what "lot" do you imagine me to be in, that I "hasten to the defense of swine",  I would point out that I've been very-critical of the current government, over the submarines & medium-speed heavy-freight railway financing, and a host of other things ?

You are absolutely right that Thailand should take this path. However I doubt an unelected PM who intimidate others to not question his and his brother assets is the right person to initiate this drive. As I said, he should lead by example and open up for the media to question his and his sibling assets. Don't you think so?

And when it is found that 95% of them are 'Unusually wealthy' how will they go about proving where the money came from ?

If they do prove wrongdoing what will the punishment be and how long will it take to actually convict people of wrongdoing ?

The one sensible suggestion made is people being given jobs declaring all wealth and assets before they take their positions.  However; re-checking their assets 'now and again' is not good enough and it should be an annual requirement with papers submitted by independent Auditors.

Absolutely - 'Junta submits to independent auditors'; reminds me of a Buddy Holly number.

Prayut was quoted as saying that it must be done equally to all groups of officials though the approach might be different.

The approach will be different like with Suthep or Yingluck? Like being unable to demonstrate unless you are a bunch of dried up women waving yellow flags outside some country's embassy?

The list is endless and this is more of the same window dressing for him and his feudal, village idiot buddies.

If you're going to go see-through all your life, at least have the decency to look good in it.

Fair enough R, you're right. I was in the wrong, Apologies for that one.

The prime minister suggested the panel look at other countries to see how they handle this matter, and what impacts would follow as a result of such the practice, Prayong said.

If the NACC is doing their job like other countries corruption agencies, the legal asset declaration is not needed. Rather than asking the panel to look at other countries, he should reform the NACC and review their performance.

I hope it happens, and they do it yearly.  I also applaud that they are looking to other countries for examples.  I have read that a few times in the past few months.  Are they finally realizing that they could use ideas from outside the borders of Tland?  That would be good news indeed.
