The National Police anti-terrorism department yesterday arrested about 200 Chinese nationals over their involvement in extorting money over internet phone calls. Department deputy director Thou Saroeun said the arrests were carried out at an apartment complex in Phnom Penh’s Tuol Kork district.

He said  those arrested were being held for questioning over Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone calls to extort money from their compatriots in China. According to Uk Heisela, director of the investigations at the general immigration department, 74 Chinese nationals were deported last month for involvement in VoIP scams.

Mr Heisela added that the number of Chinese suspects involved in VoIP crimes was more than 500 since the state recently started cracking down on the crime. Earlier this this month, police in Banteay Meanchey province raided two guesthouses and arrested more than 200 Chinese nationals conducting VoIP scams.
