In the wake of rising cases of domestic abuse in Thailand, the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is running a self-defence programme for students so they can protect themselves from possible violence at home, the National News Bureau of Thailand reported on Wednesday.

The training course has been organised by the Department of Women's Affairs and Family Development in partnership with the NLA, whose committee chairperson on women’s affairs, Suwannee Siriwetchapan, has presided over the first few days this week.

Suwannee said that domestic violence was on the rise and that most of those who had abused their own family members had once been the victims of such abuse themselves. She also added that the alcohol and illicit drug abuse also contributed.

Unfortunately, by the time students are eligible for such program, the psychological damage may already have been done.
If the program involves physical self-defense, I am not even thinking about the possible additional violence, in a number of cases, ensuing from changes in behavioral patterns and the possible circle of escalating violence.
If the program involves psychological counseling of victims how to re-program an abuser, I believe the training to be rather advanced because it would have to break through the psychological barriers of existing submission to the violence, and provide therapy for the abuser by the victim.

What you say is very true.

The NLA should be tacking the problems causing domestic violence and also dishing out proper sentences and punishments for those abusing family members.... tackle the cause... not the symptoms.... and in fact, fighting back may be one of the worst things someone can do in such a situation... as it can lead to an increase in violence!

It should also suggest that neighbours or other people who witness domestic violence, or suspect it, should contact the authorities and not turn a blind eye... as often happens.  Perhaps better education in schools about it, and public education for adults also.

yes indeed, and moreover start making the wider population aware that also sexual harassment / abuse / rape inside the family is a crime, not a mai-bpen-rai.
