Govt declares 2018 the year of sustainable tourism

Thammarat Thadaphrom

BANGKOK, 26 August 2017 (NNT) – The Thai government has declared 2018 a year of sustainable tourism, promoting the culture and the uniqueness of the land of smiles.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn, has called a meeting with the tourism, sports, and culture reform committee, which is the 6th committee under the mobilization of the administrative reform commission appointed by the government.

The meeting agreed to promote 2018 a year of sustainable tourism on the theme of “Amazing Thailand Tourism Year 2018” with a focus on the uniqueness and cultural values of Thailand.

The aim is to attract additional high quality tourists while at the same time maintaining the existing broader market, in an effort to increase economic value and distribute wealth to remote provinces.

The meeting was also informed of Thailand’s latest ranking by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) which places Thailand ninth in terms of the number of foreign visitors and third in terms of income generated from tourism.

Providing you can show a minimum of 20,000 baht/have insurance and not too many 30 day tourist visa stamps in your passport....its all plain sailing, welcome :cheesy:

Are they saying they will sustain or continue their BS about the plight of tourism?

"the uniqueness of the land of smiles".
Unique in so many ways it would take half a life time to digest it all.

I declare 2018 year of the bull (s#&@)

Just when I was getting used to the previous acronym TSTITWOL (Thai Sustainable Tourism in Thai Way of Life)...

1 hour ago, Father Fintan Stack said:

Certainly, the 8km wide floating trash island (the first one in the World) in the Gulf of Thailand is certainly sustainable.

At the rate Thailand is polluting its oceans, there won't be anywhere safe to go in a few years, let alone 'sustainable'.

Loony lefties here on their Mum and Dad's credit cards during 'gap year' can pontificate about the beauty of the country in their fisherman pants and volunteer (illegally) to pick trash up on the beach but the reality is Thailand is unsustainable at the current levels of tourism.

The infrastructure cannot cope with a regular volume of traffic let alone another 5-10m people using it. The roads are deadly, the rail network antiquated and not fit for purpose, there are boat incidents on a weekly basis and the airlines that operate here are unsafe and labelled some of the worst in the World. Only a matter of time before another major air disaster involving a local carrier as happened in Phuket with Orient Thai

What did happen after Orient Thai got caught lying about safety and pilot hours during the enquiry? I know they got banned from Europe and USA but they are still operating here as far as I can tell...

Anyway, I digress. It isn't sustainable at current levels, let alone more.

...Number 1 post of the week..well said..!!

Sustainable as democracy.

Certainly, the 8km wide floating trash island (the first one in the World) in the Gulf of Thailand is certainly sustainable.

For goodness sake look on the bright side of things will you man!

New submarines, tanks and armoured vehicles, helicopters, and a nice little windfall of ThB 30,000,000 in cash. With the possibility of more to come...

Talk about a glass half full!

Incidentally, what are "fisherman's pants"? Are they those baggy things with the crotch down by your knees, that people like to wear when their hair goes frizzy and they haven't had a proper wash for a couple of weeks?

Isn't called elephant pants?

I'm glad for it to exists... at least I can quickly see folks with whom I have nothing in common

"...promoting the culture and the uniqueness of the land of smiles."

Right. The Thai culture of a two price system. Such as charging 5 to 10 times more for western tourists to experience the parks, museums, certain temples, etc. Not interfering with jet ski and motor bike businesses as they cheat tourists with phony damage claims. Stopping and fining westerners on motorbikes, for not having a Thai license, as underage kids ride bikes with no license, no helmet and 3 to 4 people on one bike.
