Thai Airways flight TG484 from Perth to Bangkok on Saturday was cancelled after an airport’s jet bridge accidentally hit the plane’s left engine cowling.

THAI announced in a press statement that the accident happened at 9.15am Perth time on Saturday.

It said after the plane’s doors were closed and it was ready to take off, the jet bridge hit the engine cowling, causing a 60cm trace along the cowling.

The pilot had to comply with safety standards and abort the flight.

THAI said its management at Perth International Airport took immediate action to help stranded passengers to get accommodation at a hotel waiting for the next flight of THAI. Some passengers changed to other airlines, the statement added.

It said the Flight TG484 had 235 passengers and 13 crew. It was scheduled to leave Perth airport at 9.20am local time and to arrive at Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 3.20pm Bangkok time.

This is taking THAI-bashing to ridiculous extremes IMHO.

Going by that photo, they appear to have lost half of the wing ? :shock1:

Someone at Thai Airways' engineering department must have misunderstood when the boss told them that 'we need smaller planes'...

I'll take it from here.

"The pilot had to comply with safety standards and abort the flight."

My suspicious nit picking outlook thinks this is worded as though it was some inconvenience as he "had to comply".

Unlike the international aviation standards that the Thai authorities seem to avoid back in Thailand.

Might have read a bit better if was written " For the safety of passengers and crew the aircraft did not take off. or similar.

Yep, he was told to paint-out the damage, as per standard-procedure, but airbrushed it out, instead ?

"The pilot had to comply with safety standards and abort the flight"

More grammatically perfect nonsense. Are these stories robotic translations of Thai summaries or do the journos just make it up? Of course a plane can't liftoff with a hole in the engine. In such an incident the plane would be suddenly swarmed with managers and aircraft engineers. Meanwhile the Pilot (Captain) will be communicating with airport operations, Dispatchers, and maintenence supervisors. Then they make delay announcements in the cabin. No replacement plane available of course the flight will be cancelled, by Thai Airways Flight control. The jetway driver will be fired, brake failure is not an excuse under "international aviation standard".

Pilots can delay flights for weather conditions or "abort" a takeoff for warning lights but they don't have the authority to cancel a flight in a big airline like Thai Airways.

Thai Air has been having aircraft problems already . but most Airlines do not have Million Dollar plans sitting around just in case ,

So it will need to be fixed in OZ , or flown back to BKK or a repair airport with just the flight crew ,

the Passengers are just out of luck , as are the passengers for the next few days since there are probably no extra planes , and few extra seats on other airlines ,

The smart flyers are on their phones trying to find a seat before they are even off the plane.......

I have been in this position a few times.......you have to be quick and lucky !

THAI is an airline.  In Perth they took a jetway and "bashed" it into a THAI aircraft.  Get it?

" the plane’s left engine cowling. "   Who said anything about a hole in the engine ?

Huge difference between a hole in the engine & a hole in the cowling.

I live in Perth and have been told by friend who works airside at the airport that it was only a dent in the cowling but it still had to be inspected.  I was on a Brunei plane from Perth airport a few years ago and we turned back from the runway because an insignificant warning light came on. Pilot was not allowed to take off as aviation law dictates that he must have it checked. We were delayed about an hour.  Safety is taken very seriously at Perth airport.

But wait.... the OP actually said "a 60 cm trace along the cowling...."

so.... a rub mark thru to a scratch... not even a gouge, let alone a hole.

but rules is rules... #739... whenever a skybridge strikes an aircraft, said aircraft must be inspected by an engineer

Result of google search "B777 damaged cowling"

Not a 787 guess nobody pranged one recently.

This is the result of an airbridge damage to a Saudia flight (SV 1114)at Damman airport recently . The article regarding Perth incident says 60cm trace, I can't see a picture on The Nation link. Just guessing but airplane skins are pretty thin no match for a huge jetbridge, probably a hole of some kind, anything more than a cosmetic scratch will require repairs and of course the flight cancels. THAI does not keep spare planes parked at Perth.IMG_8044.JPG.419de5c2dfaa3c7ff3b23aae1b32195d.JPG&key=9c9a7bde168edbd22dd2d462ef9dc8e2e7309e0471f3b148070376ab0b83afe8

Looking at the pic above i see much more damage than only a dent.

That is a picture of an indentical incident with a similar Boeing aircraft. If a pic is available please post. I would like to see what a "60 cm trace" means to The Nations journos. If it was just a cosmetic scratch no need to cancel. The aircraft could have been inspected and cleared for flight by licensed engineers at Perth airport

Actually the Pilot is the master of the flight... he can & will abort a flight as he sees fit for what ever reason...

No-one can over-ride the captains orders !!!

And who said anything about a "hole in the engine"

the post said there was a crease made in the engine cowling.. meaning something brushed along the surface leaving a mark/crease.. the damage would have been investigated by engineers on site, either Thai airways staff if on site or by another engineering service which is designated to take care of Thai airways at Perth.

After the damage was assessed a discussion between Thai airways & the captain would have taken place as to the best way to deal with the situation, but the captain has the final word... ALWAYS !!!

Perhaps you can provide a link to prove it.

What you write is true. However if the airplane was cleared for flight by maintenance personnel and the Captain refused to fly it , an otherwise safe plane, he would have to answer to it later, facing discliplinary action possibly and termination. Do the THAI pilots have a labor union to protect them?

Yes, you are Thai bashing.

No blame can be attributed to the Thai side except a little  error of grammar

It is practically a  new plane damaged by the incompetence of an Australian ground crew

after which the pilot aborted the flight for safety reasons.

I was due to return to Bangkok from Perth one night & after 2 hours the flight was aborted after

the Thai pilot talked to the Singapore pilot who had just arrived & had had a shocking flight

with terrible turbulence & people injured.

We left around 11am in the morning  (10hour delay) Had a good snooze in a hotel provided by Thai.

& a good flight with a different flight path approved

Pilot used his commonsense & all was well

There's nothing that Duct tape can't fix..

It worked in previous cases with Thai  !!!

What do you mean "if the airplane was cleared for flight" and "an otherwise safe plane". I wasn't so it didn't.

Yes there's a THAI pilots union but they don't get their panties in a bunch when a Captain decides that the plane needs a more thorough and qualified inspection. Neither does THAI.

I don't believe the was cleared for flight and there was serious damage. No pictures of the actual damge has been posted.

Everything was done peoperly in my opinion but the damage was surely worse than a rub, crease, cosmetic scratch, or "60 cm trace" as reported. Otherwise THAI would not have cancelled the flight forcing them to arrange hotel rooms for 200 plus passengers

That is not duct tape that is aviation approved metal adhesive tape that is used to seal temporary repairs while the actual adhesive below it cures, or to cover small gaps until permanent repair is undertaken.

This subject of so-called duct tape has been done over many times in other aviation memes. The Journos always get it wrong.

Honest question.  To whom are you addressing this?  You didn't quote the Thai bashing.
