Pattaya tunnel: motorbikes and speedsters openly disobeying the law

 

 

PATTAYA: -- Moves to stop motorcyclists from entering the newly opened Pattaya tunnel seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

 

And efforts to slow traffic to 80 kilometers an hour are similarly being ignored.

 

Netizens on Facebook posted pictures of bikers openly flouting the law by using the new underpass.

 

Signs have been erected that forbid bikes, bicycles, vehicles with dangerous loads like tankers, tuk-tuks and pushcarts.

 

 

There is also an 80 kilometer speed limit that few seem to be taking much notice of.

 

Local road representative Phinit Maneerat was meanwhile slapping himself and the authorities on the back for solving Pattaya's traffic woes.

 

The Rao Rak Pattaya (We Love Pattaya) site quoted him as saying that traffic at the resort was showing a great improvement with better flow.

 

He said the restrictions put in place were designed to limit accidents.

Hahaha.. And they really thought that Thais would follow the rules 

Motorbikes and speedsters disobeying the law.

Meanwhile pc plod is sat on his big fat a++e doing nothing about it.

The rules of the road are only there for the falangs.

They don't apply to the Thais.

Cops will wait to nick the falangs,   braking the rules real soon.

 

Ps, don't see why bikes cant use it anyway,  but rules are rules,

even if they are only for us.  TIT.

I read it as motorbikes must have 80 km/h speed to enter.

I reckon the sign with the motorbike and cross red circle means they cannot enter.

 

Easy solution to speeders and scooter though............... police it.

And some were already taking the p*ss ..

Can anyone think of any logical reason why Motocycles cannot use the tunnel ?

 

The road has an 80kmh speed limit, a speed which any motorcycle and readily achieve... I just don't understand why motorcycles of any type would be prevented from passing through the tunnel.

 

Some of these road regulations seem to exists simply because they exist elsewhere... 

... 'The Five Monkeys in a Cage' scenario...

 

... The most damaging phrase "Its always been done like that" which kneecaps any intelligent logic or argument...

In a suprise move Plod used Chang to enforce No Motorcycles rule .. 

Sooooo. They spent HOW MUCH to build a tunnel that can't be used by most of the population, and has to close when it rains a little bit.  times a million.

Someone on a different thread made a comment about it being closed for a while because of a little bit of rain couple of nights ago.

If they allowed motorcycles there would be no need for a speed limit since it would be jammed with food carts in minutes.

It is not a direct feed anymore than the Sukhumvit road itself is.

In Chiang Mai they allow motorbikes to use the underpasses. Seems reasonable to allow over 50% of the travelling public to do so.

What's the use of being rich if you don't get perks that the unwashed masses can't have?   Bad enough they have to share with cars under 5 million baht.

ohh ok, before it was officially opened an not from any official source or even a news outlet.

 

funny that there has been some semi decent downfalls since it opened though and no reports of closure.................. I wonder why that is.

Maybe because motorbikes don't have the same problem with traffic jams as do motor vehicles. Also, they would be just another hazard in the tunnel.

If only someone would invent some way to take pictures of the license plates of speeding vehicles and those that drive where they're not supposed to be...

 

It would have been news if they had obeyed the law..

 

Well ,what we do not see nor hear of in this article is anything about the police;

I wonder what the police think their job really is;

Has to be quite a bit different than what we think it is;

Perhaps social media is the real law-enforcement here now

Not really the tunnel is to bypass the bottleneck at Pattaya Klaeng. Anyone can bypass the tunnel and still drive up the overpass to the Highway.

There is such a system called A N P R ( automatic number plate recognition ) But it would never work here as it requires ruthless enforcement of vehicles , driver , insurance databases as the A N P R system is constantly cross referencing vehicles it views with said databases .. In an instant .. Transgressors are hit with a fine automatically sent by post and in the case of no insurance the police will be waiting at the next jct for you to seize the vehicle .. It is a an uncompromising system that gives near 100% enforcement of laws and rules governing traffic so wouldn't work here .. 

Speedsters. LOL. Who cares if the sign says 80km/h? Most speed limits in Thailand are either too high or too low for the given road conditions and most speed limit signs have only just started appearing since 2016 - before that they were only posted on the 2 motorways, expressways in Bangkok and in a few other select locations, mostly hidden from plain view.

 

An 80km/h speed limit on the expressway is the same as on Sukhumwit road underneath the skytrain with all the traffic lights, heavy traffic and u-turns? Doesn't make any logical sense. Why not increase the expressway speed limit to a standard 120km/h as it should be and reduce the Sukhumwit road speed limit down to 50 or 60km/h? Speed cameras, although they are starting to appear in places are not common enough to worry about, so there's nothing wrong with going 100 or so through this tunnel like most drivers do anyway.

 

Another non-story with a message nobody cares about.

What are you talking about? It already exists, but doesn't work for motorcycles, because the cameras can only capture forward facing number plates.

Secondly, why are you advocating a system where the police will seize a vehicle of someone who has no insurance at the next junction? Such a draconian system doesn't even exist in police states like the USA or Australia.

 

Fines ARE sent by post (I've received a few) and they have been doing so since at least 2013. If fines remain unpaid, next year's registration will be inhibited.

Other countries allow bikes on the motorways, in the UK any bike over 50cc is allowed !
