Should I consider the quality of MRI?

Hi

I need an MRI of both shoulders.

I've previously been informed of a radiology get clinic in CM charges 8000 per side.

Ram is considerably dearer but as my wife works there it might work out not much more.

It occurred to me that all technologies are advancing apace.

My question is if I find a more up to date machine will it be a much better image for the doctor to work from ........in the case of shoulders he may be looking at quite subtle tears in soft tissue.

Is it worthwhile checking and secondly how to find out.

I was wondering if the BKK hospital being new might have the latest gear. They're known as expensive but they were certainly offering big discounts for a while to get some trade going.

ps the 8000 place is on the second ring road .....anybody any idea about thri equipment?

Thanks

Yes , technologies have moved on a'pace.  Seems 3T MRI is the latest, magnetic imaging twice the power of existing scanner and smooth bore (whatever that is) is a latest.Reports from ill informed member state one recently installed in BKK with five months waiting time Many in India, about four or five in Chennai region alone, about,  two thousand baht,3 hours away.  cheap flights about to appear  Calcutta will be nearer and possibly cheaper to get to, but google search will reveal all

I guess there are two questions
1. Would it be useful to seek better equipment for rotator cuffs or is regular MRI just fine
2. If yes, where to go also bearing in mind price

I was with the physio Doctor yesterday for other stuff but we did decide MRI for shoulders to show other doc.....wish I'd asked...duh!

No idea, but once there it opens up a host of other far cheaper options too colonoscopy, executive health check up, everything and anything, get it operated on whilst there too.

good luck    Just google 3T scanner Chennai, then skype them/e mail them...one hell of a medical city, its vast

Out of interest and just for comparison, a friend recently had a triple bypass here in CM, and said the range of prices was 350-800k , mostly at the lower end with one much more guess which.
Do u happen to know the price for top class work in India.

I ask as one who self insures so must always keep an eye on the medical purse. Sorry to sidetrack my own thread

I think regular MRI would be fine for this but who you should really be asking, is the orthopedist who will treat you.

Dr Chanakarn quite some time ago gave me a prescription slip for the radiology place on the second ring road and said if u ever need to come back, bring the MRIs with u. As I still had a fair bit of strength in the shoulders I tried the conservative approach of easy swimming, arms up wall etc......but it's not working out...time to act if at least to diagnose properly.

Whether to operate will be a kettle of worms if it comes to that given time of recovery, re-failure rate, cost etc etc

Wife just told me the cost in RAM with my family discounts its barely more......I would stick with them for ease but fact is we don't know that the cheap place doesn't have better gear.

The question becomes: choose Chanakarn from .rachavet or Dr Prasit from Ram to continue consultation. Price of any potential op as well as abilities comes into the equation, may as well start on the best track rather than change horses later

ps as always

Thx Sheryl

Single bypass about 150,000 at Chula Hospital BKK.

Apologies. I talked to the recipient. Quadruple bypass at Chula 200,000 all in. Dr or now Prof. Seri.

I assume no insurance then?  I have been to Bangkok Hospital and they were excellent but my advice would be trace the specialist not the building. Who is the specialist here in shoulders and/or MRI. No point in having latest machine if they can't diagnose. It will almost certainly be Ram or Bangkok (or perhaps Suan Dok). Good luck and let us know outcome.

Chanakarn or Prasit.

Yes, we have no insurance and no pension! Adequate funds but want them to stay adequatè a long time, this ain't gonna be the last rodeo!

As arthroscopy might be in the offing I would stay with Dr. Chanakarn, but see him in his private clinic or at Sripat, not at Rajavej.  Then if you need arthroscopy he can do it at Sripat where it will cost much less than at Ram, even with family discount.
