Becker
Is this possible to arrange online? I have done a search but not found any sites that seem to be run by the government.
Proboscis
A tourist visa to Laos is only available on arrival (to many countries) or from a Lao consulate/Embassy only. You need to have a recent passport-sized photo plus the fee which varies according to country.
ubonjoe
As said you can get a Lao visa on arrival on entry. Info here: http://www.laos-guide-999.com/visa-on-arrival.html Or you can apply for a visa at a Lao embassy or consulate.

Doing the annual to Savannakhet so would like to be as prepared as possible.

The only question you need to prepare for is the one asking for your race! There have been a few colourful responses to this over the years. I mean, what do you put? If your skin is that pinky beige/eggshell colour found in Europe that everyone calls white, is "white" a race? What about Celtic? Slav? And how exactly do you spell Caucasian? or should we write Europid to be more precise? If you are dark skinned and come from either Europe, USA or some other country where, like most people, your ethnic origins have been lost over time, what do you write? Like white, black is just a colour, not a race. To put anything else would involve some 19th century social construction with racial overtones - the term "African" covers a huge amount of variety of human beings with wildly differing ethnicities and only indicates the continent where you were born, if you were indeed born there. Asian seems clear until you realize that it covers a huge variety of people who could never be from the same ethnic origin. And to put Jewish just brings up far too much from those times that we must remember but would rather forget, when Jews were classified, had to have "Jew" written on their papers and then ultimately killed. In any case, our ancestories are mostly mixed. I heard one guy put "mongrel" on the form and although the term could be taken as derogatory if used about someone else, it captures our mixed heritage. Have you thought about what you are going to put down on the form?
