Hamas Accused of Systematic Sexual Violence in Oct 7 Attacks

An independent Israeli investigation has presented extensive evidence alleging that Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups carried out widespread sexual violence during the 7 October 2023 attacks in Israel and against hostages held in Gaza.

Get today's headlines by email image.png

The 300-page report by the Civil Commission describes rapes, sexual assaults and sexual torture that it says were used deliberately to inflict maximum harm on victims. Researchers conclude that sexual violence was employed as a tactic during the assault.

The findings draw on hundreds of survivor and witness testimonies as well as thousands of photographs, videos and official records gathered from attack sites.

The Hamas-led attacks killed around 1,200 people in Israel and saw 251 individuals taken hostage, marking the deadliest day in the country’s history.

Evidence from survivors and footage

The commission said its investigation included 430 filmed interviews with survivors and witnesses and analysis of more than 10,000 images and videos, including material filmed by attackers themselves.

Accounts in the report describe scenes of violence at several locations targeted during the assault, including the Nova music festival, where more than 370 people were killed.

Witnesses cited in the report describe hearing and seeing gang rapes during the attack at the festival. One male survivor recounted being abused by attackers. The report also records instances where victims who were raped or sexually assaulted were later shot.

Investigators documented recurring descriptions from multiple sites, including kibbutzim and military bases that were overrun, where bodies of women were reportedly found without underwear or with signs of genital mutilation.

The commission concluded that sexual and gender-based violence formed part of the attacks and described what it called the “weaponisation of sexual violence”.

Allegations of abuse in captivity

The report also states that sexual violence continued during captivity for some hostages held in Gaza, affecting both women and men.

Several former hostages have publicly spoken about abuse they say occurred while they were held, including Amit Soussana, Arbel Yehud, Romi Gonen, Rom Braslavski and Guy Gilbol Dalal. Other accounts cited in the report were shared privately with medical staff, therapists and investigators.

Among the claims detailed in the investigation is an allegation that two young relatives were forced by captors to perform sexual acts on each other. The report describes this as part of a pattern of violence that targeted family members and exploited relationships to instil fear.

The commission says the acts documented in its findings could amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocidal acts under international law.

Evidence gathered by the investigation has been placed in a secure archive and may be used in future legal proceedings.

Disputed claims and verification efforts

Hamas has repeatedly denied that sexual or gender-based violence occurred during the attacks or against hostages.

Previous investigations have also examined the issue. A report by the United Nations Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict said there were “reasonable grounds to believe” that sexual violence, including gang rape, had taken place during the attacks.

Researchers involved in the Israeli investigation said they took additional steps to verify evidence because some early claims circulated by Israeli officials after the attack were later shown to be inaccurate. In addition, some forensic material was lost when first responders quickly cleared attack sites.

To preserve independence, the commission said it did not rely on statements obtained during Israeli interrogations of detained suspects.

The report’s authors said the project was intended not only to collect evidence for potential prosecutions but also to document events for the historical record.

Many victims of sexual violence during the attacks were killed, while others remain traumatised, the commission said. It added that the investigation aimed to ensure their experiences are recorded and not dismissed or forgotten.

The October 2023 assault triggered Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which has since killed 72,742 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The United Nations considers the ministry’s casualty figures broadly reliable.

Nothing is wrong with me .

Palestinians regard strip searches as sexual assault and rape .

Even going into Western jails ALL bodily cavities are searched for weapons, phones , drugs and anything else they shouldn't have .

Equally to soldiers and colonists. Violence is violence.

The first Palestinian hanged, the world will turn its back on Israel for good.

"Raped and sexually" assaulted does actually mean they were searched for explosives and weapons .

Internal searches on prisoner's are common in many Countries

The case of Isreali prison guards caught on video raping a Palestinian prisoner that caused their arrest and a huge furor on the far right seems to have gone dormant. Very few cases of abuse ever get investigated even though the IDF promises to do so. A prime example is the IDF murder of the well-known Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Even the Biden government did nothing despite entreaties from her family.

Up to now only two people have been hanged in Israel's history. One was Eichman, who was a major figure in the Holocaust. Now we must wait to see whether the hanging law is employed judiciously. Otherwise, Netanyahu/Ben Gvir/Smotrich may end up figuratively hanging Israel.

No.That's how the dismissal of the wrongdoing is done, by equating a planned intentional massacre, sexual abuse , torture and exploitation with infrequent incidents of wrongdoing. One group set out on October 7 to do evil. The other group responded as a matter of defense and impressing on the perpetrators that the attacks would carry a heavy cost so as to discourage repeat events.

The problem people like you have when you seek to equate wrongful acts is that you ignore that one group has refused to accept responsibility for anything and the other does accept responsibility when it does something wrong. Despite the mass protests in the west by Hamas supporters and their enablers the Arab world neither supported the Hamas attack nor the Gazans following October 7. The Egyptians kept their border closed, and the Jordanians and Saudis looked the other way. Even the Palestinian Authority doesn't really care about the Gazans now.

The ICJ is addressing the disproportional, genocidal so-called self defense attack on Gaza.

There is a chasm between the leadership and the people in Arab and Islamic countries regarding Israel's treatment of the Palestinians. The behavior of the elite is conditioned by their need for US support, whether financial or sales of weapons. Privately, what elites think may be quite different than what they do or say. They are constrained by the all-powerful Zionist lobby in the US and UK. Even so, after 7 October MBS and other Saudis have made it clear that normailization is off the table until the Palestinian issue is settled.

So these "Ashkenazi zionists" have no right to return to Judea, the land that gave then their culture and their collective name. Ok. How thoughtful of you. How about the Zionists who were there all along, or the descendants of the million or so Zionists who were expelled from Arab countries and suffered mass murder and the theft of all their assets during their expulsions?

Do you even know anything about the Arabs and their religion, including the Quran? The book does not use the term Jew. It calls Jews, Sūrah Banī Isrāʾīl - The Children of Israel. the Quran does not mention Palestinians once. They do not exist in the Quran. On the other hand, the Quran acknowledges the existence of Israel 40+ times. Have a look at the passage Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:21)

This is translated as "My people! Enter the holy land which Allah has ordained for you; and do not turn back for then you will turn about losers." or "O my people! Go into the holy land which Allah hath ordained for you. Turn not in flight, for surely ye turn back as losers" This is interpreted by Islamic scholars to say that the Israelites were ordered after their exodus from slavery in Egypt, to go back to their land that is now known as Israel, the homeland of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

There were European Zionists arriving around 1880. They bought land from absentee Trukish landowners and turned around and expelled the Palestinian tenant farmers. The Jews who were there before these Zionists have nothing to do with the Europeans arriving in the colonial era.

No one is denying that these were heinous acts. However, they did not occur in a vacuum, but were a consequence of Israeli actions that are well known. Yon cannot just focus on Palestinians without taking into account the motivations for the attack. While systematic sexual violence is abhorrent, it is worth mentioning that it has been documented by objective observers to occur every day in Israeli prisons.

More BS for the gullible.

Your respomse is in reality a non-response, since you have chosen not to address the points raised, but instead go off on a red herring.

Howver I shall briefly correct the record on one of the points you raise.

The Jews who had been living peacefully for centuries amongst an Arab majority in Palestine can in no way be described as "Zionists". The term 'Zionist' is not synonimous with 'Jew'. Not all Jews are Zionists, and not all Zionists are Jews, if one includes the so-called 'Christian Zionists'. To this day, many Mizrahi Orthodox Jews are sympathetic to the Palestinian cause.

According to recent genetic studies, the Palestinian 'Arabs', both Muslim and Christian, are shown to be more closely related to the Biblical inhabitants of Israel than are the Ashkenazi Jews, whose female genetic heritage in particular shows considerable deviation, suggesting mixed marriages of Jewish men with non-Jewish women.

You seem to be ignorant of the causes (plural) behind the reluctant emigration of many Jewish people from their Arab homelands to the then-nascent state of Israel. This was mainly the result of deliberate Israeli tactics. (Before being booted out, Nazi envoys had achieved limited success in fostering hatred of some Iraqi soldiers for Jews).

To understand the nature of the tactics used by the Zionist state one has only to point to the method used to clinch the Maidan coup in Kiev: concealed snipers fired on both demonstrators and police. The Israelis used explosives in preference to small arms. Fear was stirred up amongst Jews and hatred amongst a minority of Arabs. Many more Jews might have been killed had they not been protected by their Arab neighbours amongst whom they had lived all their lives. Educated Jews often occupied important and respected positions. As had been common for centuries throughout the Muslim world, prior to the arrival of Zionism.

Few Jews now live in Arab countries, although there is still a substantial community in Islamic Iran, which is essentially an Aryan not Arab nation, although multi-ethnic. The Iranian state supports the Jewish religion. A synagogue in Tehran was recently obliterated by a targeted Israeli air-strike.

Hamas is a rock bottom terrorist group funded by Iran. And many muslims in Gaza support them or shot if they don't?

One thing the muslims are good at is brain washing via the internet. And of course the net zombies walking around would believe the

moon is made if cheese if you told them enough times. I am a person who has made a living for years betting on odds and I wouldn't bet a plug nickel on trusting or believing muslims.

“Hamas claims”—so who, and how is Israel in communication with Hamas or the reverse? First I’ve heard this.

Hamas’ terror attack and sexual violence are indisputably war crimes and crimes against humanity. Though not genocide as claimed, of course.

In a case like this, how is the attacker found, arrested, sent to court? Or…is the leadership charged?

IDF soldiers have certainly stepped far beyond the rules of engagement in Gaza. (Not talking about sexual violence. There may or may not be evidence of that.) In a just world, would they be charged as individuals or would their commanders?

If this report has been translated into English, I’d like to read it. Can anyone point me there? I have no doubt about its veracity.

@Yellowtail I don’t support “these people” nor do I make excuses for them. Sexual violence is what treats women as property.

@Nick Carter icp FFS, Nick, what the F is wrong with you?!? “Internal searches for explosives and weapons” FFS!

It is pretty shocking that a significant majority of Israeli Jews still support the attacks on Lebanon, Syria and Iran. The opposition (Bennett and Yair Lapid) also support this, so what will cause a rethink? Perhaps the final judgement in the ICJ genocide trial.

The Israeli Jews had been on the receiving end of missile attacks from Lebanon and Syria for many years prior to 2023 , their main gripe was that missiles were coming in from Lebanon and Syria and the Israeli Gov did nothing about it .

Of course those people support the Israeli Government stopping those missile attacks
