UK Police Told to Act Tough on Anti-Migrant Protests

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has told police chiefs to learn lessons from last weekend’s anti-migrant protests in Dover and Portsmouth, and to use “all powers necessary” when dealing with future demonstrations.

In a meeting on Thursday, Mahmood asked for assurances that plans were in place for forces to respond quickly and effectively to far-right groups she said were seeking to intimidate communities.

Unacceptable Disorder in Dover and Portsmouth

On Saturday, masked protesters brought Dover to a standstill, blocking access to a nationally critical road serving the port. The following day in Portsmouth, around 200 people tried to stop migrants being driven away for processing.

The Home Office said the protests involved “unacceptable disorder”. It added that some protesters were dressed in black and wearing balaclavas, creating what Mahmood described as a “fear factor” and an intent to intimidate residents.

Mahmood said the incidents were different from other protests and needed a response shaped by those circumstances.

Face Coverings Ban Under Review

The BBC understands police leaders are now actively considering recently granted powers that would allow them to ban face coverings in specific areas during protests, in response to the behaviour seen in Dover and Portsmouth.

Mahmood also raised concerns about how quickly police could act when demonstrators tried to disrupt the movement of people and block routes used for processing migrants.

A further incident followed shortly after the Dover protest. Men blocked the only road out of Langstone Harbour near Portsmouth after the RNLI brought 120 migrants ashore.

It is not yet clear whether further demonstrations will be held. In some areas of England, local groups linked to the Patriot Platform umbrella have called for more rallies.

Intelligence, Planning and Public Order Powers

The meeting discussed the emergence of Patriot Platform, with ministers believing it aims to intimidate communities. Mahmood told police chiefs they should make better use of intelligence to improve preparedness ahead of this weekend.

Her comments came after Kent Police previously said it had been aware of a possible demonstration in Dover, but had not “fully assessed” the warning before the port road was brought to a standstill.

During the meeting, Mahmood said the government expected police to use their full powers and to take robust action against any criminal offences.

After the talks, Deputy Chief Constable Andy Mariner, the National Police Chiefs Council lead for public order, said forces were continually assessing and preparing for protests and any impact on public safety. He said this includes working with local forces, specialist teams, communities and partners to ensure support is available when needed.

Mariner added that the priority was to keep people safe, maintain public order and support the right to peaceful and lawful protest, while people committing criminal offences could “expect police action”.

New Rules for Blocking Critical Infrastructure

Major changes to protest law introduced over the last three years allow officers to intervene more quickly where demonstrations block critical national infrastructure, including roads used by ports. Officers can also designate an area as a face mask-free zone for the duration of a protest.

Police chiefs said they have launched an “enhanced and co-ordinated” approach to gathering intelligence in the days ahead.

As the dingies are being escorted by French vessels, they are not in any danger that requires the RNLI to deploy.

See above

They are not rescuing people. So it's a fair assumption, that they are infact, a defacto taxi service.

Which is why you will be getting thumbs down.

Interesting. I do hope you'll follow up with some links to confirm your comments.

If these dinghies had not been intercepted by the Lifeboat then it is very likely that the dinghy would have capsized, and the coastline east of Portsmouth would have been littered with dead migrants in their flimsy life jackets. Even if the life jackets had kept them afloat it is likely that exposure would have killed them.

These dinghies should not have left French shores.

But they were neither I’m danger or distress as they had been escorted into the middle of the channel by French military vessels and a French helicopter. In this latest incident into Portsmouth where amazingly they were met by a well organised reception. This has occurred on a daily basis, ask yourself what is a actually happening to our country.

I've not read that report. Please post a link. Thanks.

Question for the obvious international maritime expert here, what does SOLAS mean?

Langstone Harbour and the adjacent Chichester Harbour both have entrances marked by distinct sand bars below the water. At certain states of the tide these make for dangerous entrances, with strong tidal currents and rough waters. Well founded vessels with experienced crews need to treat the entrances with care, crowded large rubber dinghies would be very much at risk of capsizing. Many would drown. A couple of miles west is the Nab tower entrance to The Solent and Portsmouth Harbour. Again waters marked by strong tides, a "training wall extending just underwater out to the east of the entrance, and Bembridge Ledge extending South East from The Isle of Wight. Again, strong tidal flows and lots of traffic, big commercial ferries, fast ferries, hovercraft - a dangerous environment for big rubber dinghies.

It is currently just coming off of the Spring tides in that area of the Channel, so the tidal streams are powerful and the entrances and sandbars most dangerous.

Now of course I acknowledge that for some of the more rabid here this would be seen as a definite result. Most, and certainly not the RNLI would not see it as such.

Personally I have quite strong views about these illegal migrants. I think much more could and should be done to deter them - I think this and previous governments have been remarkably limp wristed in this respect. I do not wish to see the coastline of Southern England littered with bodies. Leave the RNLI alone!

I wish some of these boneheads could actually educate themselves about what the RNLI does and why. There is a fantastic docu-series called Saving Lives At Sea. Three seasons now. They are all wearing cameras and you have full access to everything - it is very humbling to watch. I have watched every episode as it is gripping viewing.

I urge any of the critics to watch it, especially the two episodes that include migrant rescues, then come and report back.

Critics of them make me sick, they are just ignorant beyond belief.

But to answer your question. No, life vests and life jackets do not need to be SOLAS approved.

All Commercial and Industrial life vests and life Jackets need to be SOLAS approved.

And as it could be argued that the dinghies are a commercial enterprise....

There seem to be two aspects to this matter:

1. If police are being told to be tougher on law-breakers:

This should apply to all law-breakers.

Entering the country illegally involves breaking the law.

2. The government has passed Acts that, either explicitly or by delegating authority to gazette Regulations, infringe the inherent rights to privacy of law-abiding citizens. Including citizens who see no other effective manner than public peaceable demonstration to make known their antipathy towards the enactments of a political class that persistently betrays the mandate it was granted by the electorate.

The majority of today's politicians, who in reality promote the interests of a small rentier-capitalist class, re-brand many law-abiding citizens as criminals. They force them to hide their identity as if they were outlaws.

The current political class must be booted out, if necessary by supporting those they and their media assets denigrate as "right-wing extremists" to tar them falsely with a racist, neo-Nazi brush.

Today's "liberal" politicians are the most illiberal seen in many decades. This is not to raise the rights and wrongs of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But, for eight long years preceding that, they and their media ignored the massacres of the ethnic majority of the eastern Ukraine, and the suppression of their language, culture, and religion. (Let us also not forget the ethnic Hungarians of the Carpathians).

Our unrepresentative representatives wish Britain to go to war to defend a regime whose ideology our forebears fought and died to extinguish. I have my own word for them, but call them what you will.

Yes, there is evidence. It's not difficult to find.

I did a search on Google using the text "what percentage of migrant boats do the french stop, year by year".

Reading the results, the French stopped 61-65% in the last few months, and as low as 40% previous to that. It does seem that the previous deal put in place by Tories did not ask anyone to track the number of attempted crossings, but the data seems to indicate that the French stopped around 5000 attempts since 2019. Of course I want 100% of illegal immigrants stopped, but I thought the French were doing a much worse job than that, so I'm glad I took a look.

How about you serve the UK public and taxpayers and act hard on migrant crime, which is often really serious? I guess that's too hard for your feeble minds.

Why crack down in normal people that genuinely worry about thier lives and futures? Wait, I know, because it doesn't fit your far-left agenda of destroying the UK and it's society, obviously.

There will be a Labour blood-bath at the next election... they are toast. I can already the "But but but but..." whataboutery already forming... haha morons.

I will try and make this simple for you.

I am not disputing what the remit of the RNLI is, or what their website says.

I am disputing, that when it comes to the illegal migrants crossing the Channel, that the RNLI are deploying to rescue people or save lives.

If people need rescued or lives saved, then the French escort vessels are on hand to administer assistance.

Once again, I will ask you to provide a link to a reputable source, showing the RNLI deploying on a rescue or life saving mission in UK waters that involved illegals crossing the English Channel.

Complying with certain operational and legal SOLAS regulations, the RNLI ALB's (All Weather Lifeboat) from Dover, Dungeness, Hastings and Ramsgate were actively involved with the SAR (Search and Rescue) mission after a dinghy with approximately 47 souls on board, suffered structural failure while crossing from France to England.
