Travel Light Vs Travel Right

hey,

posted a topic earlier under health, probably better suited to this general topic board :o feel like this next posting is safe here?!

my upcoming travels to thailand fall under a multitude of categories: medical, r & r, SCUBA, etc. because of this, i am unsure whether or not it is advisable to bring my own gear (40 pounds gets heavy fast). sure, it's great to have own stuff, but what to do with it while running around and not diving.

any suggestions? leave with reputable dive shop? stuff in bus station locker? leave home and rent?

thanks for help.

ps. whoever said it, said it right, this forum is good and (time) consuming!

What's the ratio of dive days to other days? If you're going to dive a lot then bring your own gear. If it's just part of the time, rent. The quality of rental gear varies quite a bit, so if you decide to rent, check the gear out carefully.

Before I retired to LOS I used to come here frequently on dive trips. I usually brought my own reg, mask, fins and computer, but used the dive boat's BC, etc.

If I were only going to dive a day or two while on a longer trip, I'd bring my mask (corrective lenses) and rent everything else.

You might bring your own regulator if you're comfortable with the way it fits you.

thanks. the more i process the idea, the more i'm leaning toward light travel. figure my reg and wrist computer wouldn't be too much to drag around when not diving.

some places i've gotten wet regard gear as part of the dive price, other places it's a separate charge. diving in thailand falls in which camp, do you know? :o

thanks again,

Seems that most places make a separate charge for full gear - which varies from 300-800 Bht per day. Compare the operators listed for Phuket as examples:

Personally, I go along with Buadhai's list. Forget the wetsuit unless it's a lightweight shortie and/or you're a very unusual shape. I would always bring my own mask - but then I have a large nose and it took me a while to find one that fits properly :D
