Slightly confused by your post - do you want to go to Hong Kong or mainland China?

If the former, many countries don't need a visa. If you're from the UK (markuk?) then you can visit HK for quite an extended period (up to 6 months I believe) without a visa.

If you want to go to the PRC, then regrettably the easiest method is usually to travel via HK and get your Chinese visa there. You can get a 6 month Chinese visa on a same day service from the consulate in HK.

A year or two ago, I got a visa for mainland China, at the consulate in Chiang Mai, with 24 hour turnaround. Is that still true at the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok? I'm returning to Shanghai on 14 April, to avoid Songkran. If I get my Chinese visa in February, do I have to use it within a certain period of time?

Its for Hong Kong however not for me - it is for someone who needs one. Tried again today and cant get answer at embassy so suppose i will have to go all the way there to find out. :o
