Evil porn snaring Thais, Paiboon says

Deputy Prime Minister Paiboon Wattanasiritham yesterday warned of an "evil cycle" that allowed young Thais to surf pornographic websites and watch obscene clips in just 25 seconds as well as buy X-rated movies.

He said Thai net surfers did more than 520,000 searches using the keyword "sex" in January alone.

The scenario prompted the government to announce a "good society for children" policy with a national committee on safe and constructive media to oversee television, radio, telephone services, the Internet and movies.

Paiboon, the social development and human security minister, said Thailand had about 500,000 web pages containing inappropriate and sexually obscene content which young people could easily access.

What seemed to spread most quickly were video clips featuring young women in revealing clothes, he said, citing an obscene video clip featuring an actress look-alike which had received nearly 300,000 online searches in the past two weeks.

An initial investigation had found there were at least 250 websites that featured obscene and nud_e clips of teenagers.

"Thai youths and children thus become both the performers and the audience. When connected to the Internet, it takes only 25 seconds to access inappropriate websites such as pornography, which is different from the past when it took a lot longer to find a porn book or sex video," he said.

Citing a recent study that said Thai children mostly used the Internet to see obscene material followed by VCD movies and books, Paiboon said inappropriate Internet content could lead to sexual violence and crime among youths who were being constantly stimulated.

The Internet was also a channel for criminals to lure the innocent, he said, citing the cases of 19 children aged 13 to 15 being reported to the Mirror Foundation's Missing Person Centre.

On many of the obscene websites were commercial banners promoting the 1900 telephone service and messages urging people to call a number to exchange sexual experiences or get together with "students providing sex services as a sideline", he said. About 10 kids had been reported as missing after making contact with strangers via the phone services, Paiboon added.

"I have to talk about this because it's now a factor in youth problems," he said, adding criminal gang elements appear to be involved.

The National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec) had reported that half of Thailand's 8.4 million Internet users last year were young people under 25. It predicted this year there would be 13 million Internet users and 6.5 million of them young people, Paiboon said.

Nectec also said Thais last year looked up the key word "sex" 5.8 million times and this January there were 520,000 searches.

Paiboon said the public could provide opinions and suggestions on his personal web blog at http://gotoknow.org/blog/paiboon.

We should thank mister Paiboon.

As a Deputy Prime Minister, he shows a high integrity. And his achievements are amazing.

With people like Paiboon, it's sure, Thailand will walk gloriously on the path of enlightment and progress.

The man is a heroe, no less.

Bon. Now back to real world : what do we do for the south ? and the new Constitution ? And what about the elections ?

Oh tik maaaaak. :o

porn is everywhere and has been available in Thailand for many years. What I find more disturbing is how sexual images on the internet were emphasized more strongly than this:

On many of the obscene websites were commercial banners promoting the 1900 telephone service and messages urging people to call a number to exchange sexual experiences or get together with "students providing sex services as a sideline", he said. About 10 kids had been reported as missing after making contact with strangers via the phone services, Paiboon added.

He said Thai net surfers did more than 520,000 searches using the keyword "sex" in January alone.

Is this the conclusive proof that the person who searched for sex is actually looking for pornographic website? What about the other people who are looking for related topics? Such as safe sex, attraction to opposite sex, to name few :D

And there are far more places in Thailand with inappropriate and sexually obscene contents which young people could access even more easily, such as universities, where the girls wear very tight and revealing dresses. :o

What seemed to spread most quickly were video clips featuring young women in revealing clothes, he said, citing an obscene video clip featuring an actress look-alike which had received nearly 300,000 online searches in the past two weeks.

I suppose the all-wise Paiboon has never heard of Panthip Plaza, and the probability that 50% of all Thailand's porno could be wiped out in one police raid? Geez, if I as a foreigner knows it, then somebody must be on the take. :D

I know, it's a profound revelation. :o Typical of lotsa bark but little or no bite.

"Lots of bark & No bite" ! YES! indeed.

Instead of worrying about people looking at sex, which most people actually enjoy, the government should dedicate itself to solving real problems:

1. The ongoing violence in the southern provinces.

2. The environment which in some places is quite obscene.

3. A girl gets her arm chopped off by or in the presence of a police officer(s) and they're out on bail? Obscene.

4. Not one of the corrupt officials in the previous government is behind bars --- Yet. Now that Khun Sondhi has been sentenced for his comments, maybe Podgy will get what she and her clan deserve.

That's the problem with these damm kids these days, they just don't appreciate how much effort we old 'uns had to put to find decent porn in our days.

Blaming the internet for Thailand's moral decline is a bit rich, maybe? Of course that means all the filth from outside Thailand's rigorous moral boundaries, obviously... :o From buffalo cart to cyberspace in a few short years.

i beg to differ, Phil.

No wait, you're right! :D

I wasn't "connected" much until about 2003. Prior to that, rarely did I view much Porn, cos it was quite inaccessible. I ONCE went into a dodgy store in amsterdam to buy a video, and I got ripped off and it was <deleted>.

Since about 2003, I've rarely not been connected :o

So there's a blog for this scary character?

I am seeing a classic buildup. Like any political decision, there's always this kind of build up... Increasing amount of "comments of concern" over a length of time, then....

Boom, action!

Look at most wars, gun control, budget problems, etc etc etc... any political action is undertaken after a distinct length of time of expressions of concern.

It's like "let's get this concept into peoples heads for a while, then when we take action, maybe they won't mind...."

Internet shut down, chinese style censors?

Stupid Evil Porn on the internet and dvd's. Funny how pictures on the internet are a problem, but the brothels, massage parlors, lady bars, etc., where you can easily buy sex doesn't seem to be a problem here. I believe now it's almost as easy to find those places as it is to find a porn site on the internet in Thailand. Go Figure!!!

Now how about fixing the pollution problem here in Chiang Mai. Setting a date for free democratic elections. Fixing the violence in the south. Aren't those really bigger problems to the health and long-term stablilty of Thailand?

That's absolutely right! In my day it involved raking around the bushes in the local park for hours. I remember once I found a copy of the 'Razzle' summer edition in the grounds of the local library, result!

Hmmm,

Only 25 seconds to access porn! He must have the 1000 Baht a month broadband then. :o

By the way does anyone know whether sex aids are illegal in Thailand as I once heard from some bloke in a pub, and if so on what grounds other than that face thing again? :D

Instead of blaming the access on Internet, the government should install a proper sex-education program on schools throughout the nation

The gov't is worried about what goes into our minds...they're worried about pornography and their worried about people who don't like the current military dictatorship informing us of why. It is common for military dictatorsips to be worried about what goes into our heads and they can and will take any steps necessary to control it. Freedom of information is not something that most military dictatorships are promoting...on the contrary they usually do alot to reduce our freedoms and allow only the information that they want.....this is not surprising...just one more type of the military dictators denying us freedom...that's all....same as it ever was.

So that's what they do instead of bringing Thailand's internet up to an acceptable standard The National Electronics and Computer Technology Center sit there and count how many times the word "sex" is googled. Hi tech stuff!

After last years trip to Pattaya I was shocked beyond belief by all the sex and sexually explicit activities going on there. And I was never on the internet once. Just walking around the streets sight seeing.

It was outrageous!!! And all happening right under the noses of the Thai police.

Disgusting, that's all I can say.

I haven't been the same since. I'm now in counseling for post traumatic sex, I mean stress.

I plan to sue the Thai government for allowing this perversion to be out in plain view for women and children to see. And for the debilitated condition I now find myself in.

A couple of my colleagues cannot believe these accounts and insist on seeing it for themselves.

We will depart Thanksgiving Day for Pattaya for continued research to document our case.

It's a dirty job but someone's got to do it... :o
