September 28, 200718 yr I am now living in Issan and my crate of stuff, including my charcoal grill, has finally arrived. I made some inquiries about aromatic wood for grilling/smoking and was advised to try mango & makam. I've tried mango, but am not 100% pleased with it. (I would kill for a hickory tree) I would like to know what else you all might use here. As an aside, I have thought about having my brother send me some hickory nuts to plant here. This is a "long term" solution, obviously. Will deciduous trees, like hickory, grow here in Issan? What about mesquite? Thanks, Tagaa
September 28, 200718 yr Here in the North West of the U.S. we use a lot of Apple and Alder. Alder is a weed IMHO based on the fact that it grows so fast and everywhere here. It may grow in the cooler area parts of Thailand, but it may not like the heat. Mike in Seattle

I have been looking for Basil wood-Basil after it has gone to seed and is getting brittle. Have not found it as yet only fresh but it is cheap. Will try to grow some soon. You using Gas or charcoal?
September 28, 200718 yr An old friend of mine, unfortunately now deceased, always looked for fruit tree wood. He decided that lumyai wood was the best and pretty easy to come by.
September 28, 200718 yr Lime and orange have a nice flavor. To each his own taste but lime wood (milder than mesquite but simular) is plentiful in Thailand and orange (a fruity flavor) is also available.
September 28, 200718 yr Last time I was at Homepro they had bags of Mesquite for sale, not too expensive.
