I am looking into applying for a 30 day extension of a 60 day tourist visa.

My honest reason is that I am retired but under 50 and living in Thailand much of the year. That is probably more information than Thai immigration would enjoy hearing about. Or more like it, sort of the wrong answer.

So, what is the standard "reason" to state in this application?

Can you just say "to extend vacation" or "continue touring Thailand" even if you are basically living in one place?

Any suggestions, tales of experiences, appreciated.

All you need to enter in the space on the application form is the word......."Tourism"..............dont forget your passport photo and photo copies of the relevant pages in your passport. (and the fee of course )

It is almost too obvious. :o

I thought there might be some craftiness to it because I have heard that these extensions are not automatic. Why would someone be turned down, assuming the application was completed and they paid the fee?

I got 100days a while ago on my "TR" visa, by bringing my excited and new wife, and the wedding papers, photo's.

Why - Extra long Honeymoon in Chaing Mai.

The Immi Guy gave me an "Under Consideration" and came back in a month to get the extra 70 days.

Sadly I had to make a dash overseas in the first week of the 70 days.

how many days before the expiry of the 60 day stay should one apply for the extension?

My relatives tell me it is "polite" to do it about a week for a tourist extension. But you can do it on the last day.

A week certainly sounds reasonable.

However, being a somewhat unreasonable sort, I would want to apply earlier than that to be sure of my travel plans.

Does anyone know how early I could file the extension application?

For example, would they accept it two weeks before the expiry of the initial 60 days?

why o why, all you do is to give them a reason to take a deep look at your passport, visa, because they don't understand your comment, and maybe they might send you upstair cause they don't understand your honesty, make it simple and you'll live to make another visa run.

Just go on the last or second last day and fill in the form. Pay the money and thats it. If you are really concerned about what to fill in. Tell them you and your gf want to do more travelling. Easy. Thats what i do and many others i know. If you fill in your address in Bangkok or wherever. Then as long as its not a hotel then they will know that you are staying here. Dont worry about it. Dont stress. It really is no hassle.IMO

While we are on the topic on applying for an extension, how many days before the expiry of the 60 day stay should one apply for the extension?

I have received extensions twice from 2 different immigration offices and both gave me the extension from the date that I went to the office and applied. So if you go to ask for the extension one week prior to the end of the visa your extension starts on that day. Be safe and go the day before your visa expires.

I know at Mukdahan Immigration Office they have a sample copy of an application for extension with several "reasons" for the extension.

This has been my experience as well. However there have been people who have commented before on Thaivisa that they have applied a week early for the extension but it has started from when their 60 days are up rather than date of application...........so it may be one of those situations where it comes down to how the officer feels on the day and his interpretation of the rules. I/d go either on the last day or the day before your 60 days are up just to be on the safe side.

When you buy (in UK) your visa it is for 90 days (3 months) you just have to get it extended for the last 30 days, so this will be automatically be given with the right paperwork.

I would go near the end of my visa running out as I think your extension would be given from the day of your visit to immigration, not 100% on this, maybe someone could confirm/deny this?

That sounds very odd to me.

A TR visa is good for a 60 stay, not a 90 day stay. Perhaps we are just talking semantics.

Good advice here on the merits of waiting till near the end of the 60 days to apply for the 30 day extension.

Not sure about tourist visas, but I've actually been sent away for coming to renew my non-immigrant B too early (2 weeks). In my case, I just knew I had a few trips coming up in the last month before my visa expired and just figured I'd go ahead and get it done so I wouldn't have to worry about it expiring while I would be away. But evidently, they've got so much paperwork to deal with that they'd just rather work with what's most urgent...coming early is sort of like cutting in line I guess. So in this case, procrastination is actually the thing to do. (I was told at that time to come no sooner than the last week of the visa's validity.)

Good point, extensions are granted from the day of application.

I believe booma has got mixed up between the time you have to use the visa once it has been issued (3 months) and the length of stay you are granted upon landing (60 days).

A 2 month visa is good for 60 days. You can then goto immigration pay 1900 baht and get another 30 days extension. Thus you get 90 days all up. But you do pay again for the final 30.

So whilst on the subject.

I have used both my 60day visits. Been to Immo twice. Am off to do a visa run to Cambodia for another 30day visa. That should be alright???? I hope so. We leave for Aust in April for 10 days so I can get the Imm B visa done.

Is this a recent thing that you are given 30 days extension from the day you apply as opposed to an extra 30 days from the expiry of the visa?

I've extended tourist visas a number of times over the years and I've always got the full 90 days, even if I've applied for the extension 2 weeks before the 60 days is up.

Visitors here regularly ask me this question. I wouldn't want to misinform them.

Carlthailand..........as Jockstar says you/ll have no problems, if you want to be doubly sure take your ticket to Aus with you just incase your asked (100:1 shot)................sua yai.........see my post on the first page, ive known people have their extension from when they apply and others who recieve theirs to run from the end of the 60 day period irrespective of when they apply.

Back when i was on the tourist visas and requested an extension for "tourism", i went to the Immigration office in Suan Plu (or whatever its called) and just wrote down "tourism" for the extension reason. The last time i went with my Thai g/f about which the female officer winked at me and said "oh, i understand. see you in 3 months" and gave me the extension - the same officer that gave me an extension 3 months earlier too. She clearly knew i'm not an average tourist. They don't really care unless you do something really wrong.

Could you be so kind as to list them for us or provide a link?

Thanks much.

Note that all nine are countries not on the 30 day visa free entry list and can still apply for extension but not the 30 days most expect to receive.
