Bubble has had a major face lift, grand opening was last week, and I am told it has dramatically improved. Wifey tells me strict new rules is keeping out the farang rif raf and it's back on the circuit for the Thai party crowd. Definitely worth another look.

You initate a thread about the best clubs in Chiangmai, then you go on to tell us which bars, go-go bars and pubs that you don't like. Seems rather objective and contradictory, but then again... :o

Queen Vic would indeed be boring as an entertainment venue, but for lunch or dinner I have to say it's getting pretty awesome, and awesome value too. I keep getting more impressed on each visit and making it more of an actual dinner stop rather than just a quick snack. If you haven't been, give it a try.

Anyway, back to the clubs; yeah, obviously Spicy/Sharkey/Mandalay would be in quite a different league as the mainstream Thai clubs.. Doubt they even belong under the same topic.

That said, I don't really care for dark freezing cold halls with wall to wall tables with drunk teenage kids. So.

On Bubble:

> "In a nut shell: 100 baht entrance (can often scam your way in if it's late) buys you

> noxious cocktail or beer, awash with ladyboys, clumsy tourists exhibiting rave acumen,

> free lance pros hiding in dark corners and .."

That's a rather sad description, I mean sad on the part of a magazine. Apparently ladyboys reflect badly on a place? CM News would rather have them stay at home or ply the streets and not interfere with their high class clubbing?? Is this a call for sexist discrimination at the door? Like some clubs "No Ladyboys Allowed"? Can't believe they didn't take some more care in the way they phrased this. Is this 1950's mid-west suburbia?

They continue to say that it's still one of the VERY FEW places with a dance floor.. Well hellooo.. They just don't get it, do they? (as in Western / tourist preference)

Cheers,

Chanchao [There, that should get this conversation on its way. :o ]

We went to Bubbles last night and it is a great improvement. Was really quite impressed and I think I was the only riff raff present.

I find myself wondering if signs banning Ladyboys acceptable :o

Hi,

just nipping in after checking out answers regarding a stag night.

Where is Horizon? (under the Duang Tawan, i think Chanchao mentioned?)

As for Space Bubble, (one of my little annoyances is my mates call it 'bubbles'... MP '<deleted> R!) well, if no riff-raff allowed... I'm pretty sure you couldn't get more 'riff-raffier' than 20 hideously drunk guys wearing wigs and sporting desposable cameras!

so what is the situation regarding ladyboys in some venues(term used loosely)

i know there is a sign in the entrance of spicy saying no ladyboys.

i once saw one try to get in,and the doorman ushered her/it/he to one side and shone a torch in its face, and then thrown out

why are they banned anyway?

complaints maybe from angry many farang who inadvertantly took one home whilst out of their face drunk, not being able to tell the diffrence ,and so embarrassed felt the need to protest against them.cant think of any other reason,as iv never seen them violent or causing bother

Monkey Club can be good depending on what band is playing.

where is the monkey club??? and what time they start playing ??

Located on Nimmanheimin soi 9. The place is open 5 pm until 1 am. Not sure if there is a fixed time the band starts playing. On the occasions I have gone it was already past 11.

The best band (not sure if they have a name) do excellent cover versions of Silly Fools and Modern Dog songs. No originality but it sounds *really* good - if you like those bands, that is.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned C^Bar, just across the Nawarat Bridge nearby the wooden Christian Church. The band has always been upbeat and the mix of customers are upscale Thai and local farangs. The food has been consistant in my opinion and the drinks aren't out of line.

Well I am glad there are some younger ex-pats carrying on traditions.

But for the Porn Ping to be talking about Frang riff raff when it has long been the host to Thai riff raff, especially in the nightclub on the hotel level, is a bit amusing.

so guys, what is the 'new' bubble like.

has it had a major facelift? how about the music as it was appallingly out of date, the djs were a good 5 years behind the times

does it matter? out-of-date music can be great to dance to

just go and have fun

as for Ladyboys being banned, I suppose there can be some who are just into picking your pockets, and give the rest a bad name. Some are great company and know how to enjoy life

Bubble is OK

The 'new Bubble' is great. They have totally revamped the place and it looks fab. All the old plasticky moon rock decor they use to have on the walls have gone so have the 80s mirrored walls, theres a new dj box and swanky new plasma tv and lighting system. Totally different layout apart from the toilets and bars, they still in the same place. It has a good modern look to it now.

as for being "5 years out of date", I cant agree with you there. Most of the music played on the night we went, sounded like it was on the Ministry of Sound annual 2006 CD.

If you really want to know check it out for yourself.

wow,i will check it out when we come in november.mos 2006! the music must also have changed a hel_l of a lot since it closed:).maybe they took some advice that playing a blur song 2 poor dance remix for 3 years in a row every night is not the way,and cheesy eric prydz call on me!it was ok a few years ago in bubble, decent house and trance, but the last year or so was the same techno tunes every night after 12pm.maybe they will play decent house and hed kandi styles in a year of so.maybe they making an effort to catch on to the bangkok club scene.

i think the problem bubble had was trying to appeal to the audience of mostly european males, excluding british.who would dance to the sound of a fire alarm if it was loud enough lol.i once saw it,im sure they were german! thus playing cack out of date tracks.at the end of the day bubble is (was) like spicy's younger brother, not quite as seedy, but most go for one thing, and its also full of over 50's.

then again its not my place to judge, each to their own.but i hope it has improved as the aim of the facelift was to re open with a better class of people, just as horizon club has done.farang may even get turned away.apparantly if drunk and rude.although that seems to only happen to the israelis and germans in my experience, who usually come up against a angry thai girls thai bf!

anyway thanks for the review, will check out the new style.

so whats happening with lucky bar and charmin.i hear they are making the 2 bars into a club of some sort.i take it ja(owner of charmin) and her french husband must of sold up to lucky bar owners.

anyone any info on opening date, type of club etc.

not surprised lucky bought it,as they are one of the busiest spots on kotchasarn late night, and charmin was the total opposite.hope its a good late night alternate to the meatmarket that is 'spicy'

I was pleasently surprised when I went to Bubbles after the re-vamp, definitely worth a night out there. Went there this weekend, and there did seem quite a lot of Thais there, aswell as the usual tourist farangs, dancing like they've drank some Sangsom for the 1st time, lol!! Looks quite modern now.

Not sure whats happening with Lucky/Charming Bar.

Also there will be a new night-club opening - Sawasdee, which is located underneath Chiang Mai Grand View Hotel, this is located on Super High Way Road. I think this will be open next month.

My fav clubs in CM are Warm Up (i wonder why!), Discovery, Fashion House, ID4, Monkey Club.

Has anyone been to that Hua Him club next to Mandalay? Any good or not?

Foxy,

As far as i know, the Lounge bit of Warm Up is the only place i know of that plays house/old skool/D&B/etc etc, though thats limited to Friday/Saturday nights.

Discovery is located on Huay Kaew Road, opp Kad Saun Kaew Shopping Centre, erm I cant actually remember where ID4 is (which isnt that good as i drove there on my bike, i think near Airport Plaza way, though not sure!). Unfortunately the music at these locations tends to be your classic thai performers on stage, followed by the norm Hip Hop, thats seemed to be played at most places.

Discovery used to be great. Always had plenty of "uppers" available at good prices (at least so the missus told me) And heaps of young crumpet too.

Anyway what's wrong with the classic Thai performers "after all it is Thailand anyway" If ya wanna listen to classical limey music ya might as well stay at home. :o

i merely stated what places i like in cm,and included a few bars also.quite simple
