I'm thinking of converting my spoked, tubed-tyre wheels to be able to fit tyres without inner tubes. I can do it myself using Outex or similar kit, although it can be fiddly and time-consuming OR can have it done by these people for about 4,500 ฿ - https://www.facebook.com/vptubelesswheel/ I know nothing about them. Has anybody used them - or know somebody that has - for tubeless tyre conversion and can offer an opinion of their work standards and performance of the kit?

Then he'd get a few more in the hope that ezzra'd buy them, too, at a suitably inflated price.

Will your foreign wife be able to join you in UK?
MartinL replied to kwilco's topic in Marriage and Divorce
UK government have that completely ar53 about face, don't they? The policy should be "You're welcome to go back to the country that was so unbearable that you had to leave and claim asylum, for a holiday or any other reason, but you don't then come back to UK ... ever". -
Mike Lister - Thanks for gathering this in one simple (I hope) thread. While I could easily see where 60k฿ and 190k฿ allowances and exemptions come from, I was always dubious, after reading RD and various accountants' websites, of the applicability of the 100k฿ deduction to me as someone not working, in receipt of pensions and nothing else. It defied logic that a deduction could be made for expenses that were never incurred in the first place. However, somebody (or perhaps more than one 'somebody') in the multitude of pages in these threads - it might even be you, ML - has been filing tax returns for a few years and has received the 100k฿ deduction so I must conclude that it's valid. No panic as far as my little family is concerned. I decide early on in this tax discussion that I had absolutely no intention of bailing out of Thailand - being with my wife here (she doesn't want to leave Thailand and I have no intention of leaving her!) is worth more than the few ££ in tax I might be required to pay in tax to Thailand. We're both past the stage in our lives where we want to buy expensive 'things' or take round-the-world trips - we have just about all we need with no debts now and can live quite adequately on our joint pensions even though they don't total a vast sum.

Thanks worgeordie. Problem is on my 2 laptops, as mentioned, and on my phone using both wifi and mobile data separately. From that, I'm guessing it's not a problem with the 3 devices nor wifi and mobile network. Looks like a Slimjet fault, in my limited view, yet you seem fine.

Just today I've had problems with my Slimjet browser on both my laptops. Websites that are already bookmarked will load with no problem but if I search for anything in the Slimjet search box, I get a message saying "This site can't be reached ... took too long to respond". I know there are a few people on here using Slimjet so I thought I'd ask the question - Are you having similar problems?

Import duty on motorbike accessories
MartinL replied to thailandsgreat's topic in Motorcycles in Thailand
Spot on there, VN. I bought a set of shocks from UK last December. The Thai Customs receipt listed Duty as 30%, VAT 7%, DHL fee of 200฿ +VAT. Total add-on costs 41%. -
Update on this. Since October I've been talking to one of my pension administrators about Wise. Initially, their response was a firm "No we cannot transfer to a Wise account'. However, it turns out that they weren't aware of Wise at all - had never heard of it. After providing details of my Wise account to them and giving them information so that they could find out how it worked, they did some investigation with the result that they've decided that Wise IS suitable for transfer of pensions. They are now able to transfer my pension to my Wise account when I make the firm request for them to do so. I won't be making the change at the moment as I just wanted to establish the PRINCIPLE that Wise was a safe method of payment. Objective achieved.

Taxation of Ex-Pats pensions etc.
MartinL replied to LittleBear57's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Excellent post and almost exactly the process I'd arrived at, with exception of health insurance, using different figures. Just a note; Section A(5) should be 210,000 rather than 21,000. -
Many years ago, I asked my bike insurance company in Thailand about transferring my 50% NCB to a new vehicle. They replied, as you rightly point out, that the NCB was with the vehicle not the rider/driver. I then asked if, on buying a second-hand vehicle whose previous owner had earned maximum 50% NCB on that vehicle, I'd also be entitled to the 50% NCB. I got no response even after repeating the question a few times. As you say, completely bizarre.

I lost my 13 y.o. dog in June. He refused to eat anything that we gave him. Vet found no reason for his refusal to eat so it just seemed his time had come. We offered him his old favourites but he got thinner and weaker by the day. Euthanasia was refused by our vet. Although he was largely immobile in what turned out to be his last days, he managed to find a place in the garden that he very rarely visited and he just collapsed there and died. Sadly, that was while we were away from home for a while although our son was looking after him as much as he could. He's now buried in that spot. It was heartbreaking to see him pass and be unable to help him but, since it seemed that, effectively, he starved to death as much as anything else, it was a relief - for both of us, I believe. He was a good lad and had a happy life, I think. I still have one dog - his daughter - who's now 10. I hope the vet's attitude to euthanasia changes by the time it's her time to go.

A couple of days ago, I took my change without checking - thinking about something else - and was walking out of the shop. As I got to the door, the girl from the till caught up with me and said 'Sorry, I got your change wrong - here's the 100 ฿ I short-changed you'. Mr. DIY in my local Lotus's.

In the past week, I've just activated a Wise account set-up many months ago by making a small deposit and giving verification in the form of passport photo and selfie, all on laptop, Before doing that, account details weren't visible. After completion of deposit and verification and giving a short while for Wise checks to be made, I got an e-mail saying all was OK. At that point, account details - sort code, number, IBAN etc - were available after logging-in and going to the 'Manage' page.

Helmetless motorcycle rides in Thailand puts lives at risk
MartinL replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Helmets have a definite lifespan, after which the shell material has deteriorated so that it's no longer safe. Straps get frayed and weak, fastening mechanisms break. While what's suggested here IS a good idea, it could lead to old, badly maintained helmets being passed among kids whose parents don't recognise a lid that 'beyond its sell-by date' and next-to-useless. Picture of my helmet and a helmet given away free with my wife's new bike. I won't let her, or anyone else, use it - she has a far better quality one for daily use. It can be deformed using the pressure of just one finger on each side and it 'creaks' under even that slight pressure. There is no protection for chin and temples, two areas that are far more vulnerable than the crown of the head in an accident. The strap is flimsy. I see LOTS of these being worn on the streets, strap undone. My lid, by contrast, can't be appreciably deformed by even strong pressure on the shell and it's SHARP 5* rated. I don't suggest that everyone should buy a highly-rated helmet but that free thing is about as much use as the plastic bags I see worn by motorcycle riders to keep rain off their hair. -
New "Income" tax law 2024
MartinL replied to Tom Vanderlay's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Despite Jim refreshing my memory, I'm still going with the assumption that such pensions are excluded from the DTA. A pleasant surprise might be forthcoming when/if all this ever clarified. -
New "Income" tax law 2024
MartinL replied to Tom Vanderlay's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Thanks Jim. I saw that long ago, many months before all this tax discussion became a 'thing' and had completely forgotten it. Thanks for refreshing my memory. -
https://www.ducati.com/ww/en/company/innovation/engines/superquadro-mono I hope this will sees the light of day in Ducati showrooms and will not be a non-starter as was a roadgoing version the Supermono in the 1990s. Being a long time fan of old Ducati singles, the Supermono was a model I waited in vain for in those days. Even now, approaching 70, I think I'd lust after one of these in sports bike guise rather than ....... whatever that style is in the webpage - supermotard (it says)? Not for me - probably too tall - but a sportsbike version ........... give me a test ride!! Doubt I could afford it now, though.
