  1. In 1996 I moved to Thailand and lived in Pattaya from june 96 to May 99. In those days it was still a good place to live and have fun.

In 1999 I decided to expand my horizons and move to other parts of Thailand, away from tourism and its touts offering services.

IN 2007 a friend came down to visit me and I took him to Pattaya, hadn't been since there moving away in 1999. WOw, the place changed a lot and not in its favour.

My impressions in 2007 compared to the second half of the 90's era were; staff in most industries seemed more aggressive and less polite. Different attitude and vibe going around.

It just has this busy, crowded, mental vibe about it now. In the 90's it was busy but one still had this laid back, easygoing feeling.

With the economical and political issues after 2007 I can only imagine how it must be now.

Always liked the place, had a wonderful time living there for 3 years, enjoyed my last visit in 2007 but did realize that I wouldn't want to live there anymore. Started to learn a lot more about Thailand's people, history, culture and language then ever before. I doubt if I had stayed in Pattaya that I would have reached this level of "integration".

THais desperate? Some very much so probably! Some completely the opposite who couldn't care less about Pattaya, Thais working there or farang holidaying there.

here is a video of Pattaya in 1985.

It looks and sounds like not much has changed. Its just an expanded version of the same thing.

Good to watch, things arent that different aesthetically ... They all dress like Russians.

And for those who say Blackpool doesnt show the real England id say that sh7thole is a very good example of towns/cities in modern day England at the weekend with drunks fighting, being aggressive and throwing up all over the place, just a slightly more extreme version.

Pity it used to be a nice family resort, now its derelict.

  2. Dont think so as everyone is on commission, try offering 1500-2000bht if youre there for a fortnight.

Where you staying try Tonys gym near Walking Street its 120bht a time, but go before 9PM as aircon goes off then and it no good to go for a decent workout.

  3. I was looking forward to this WC for the last 18 months or so, whenever it was clear England would qualify.

But is anyone like me in agreeing that so far its been the worst WC in living memory.

It started with the rapist and the corrupt fcuker from FIFA trying to get front billing at the dreadful opening ceromony. After which there has been lots of absolutely teriible football in the majority of games, footballs that everyone thinks are no good .... vuvelas or whatever theyre called buzzing away for 90 minutes .... some of the worst refereeing decisions imagineable .... half empty grounds .... only a few players having decent performances ... huge gaps between games and finally England being worse then useless (but i thought the WC in 1994 was one of the best for atmosphere, drama etc...)

    Roll on Euro 2012!

  4. England fan fined for trespassing

    Journalist has case adjourned

    Joseph_2472358.jpg Joseph: Fined

Pavlos Joseph has been fined £65 after pleading guilty to trespassing after entering the England dressing room following the World Cup match against Algeria.

The 32-year-old appeared in court in Cape Town on Wednesday charged with trespassing following the game with Algeria on 18th June.

Sunday Mirror journalist Simon Wright was arrested on Monday night at Cape

Town international airport after being charged with defeating the ends of justice and flouting the Immigration Act, after being accused of orchestrating the incident.

Joseph claimed he entered the dressing room as he was looking for a toilet, but used the encounter to tell David Beckham the game had been "a disgrace".

Joseph gave an interview to the Sunday Mirror in which he said he was looking for the toilet at Green Point stadium after the match when a security guard sent him in the direction of the players' tunnel.

He was arrested at the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay on Sunday 20th June, the day his interview was published.

At Wednesday's hearing Joseph pleaded guilty to the charge of trespassing and was fined £65, while the case against Wright has been adjourned until 7th July.

You have got to laugh at this stuff, maybe it would of been more appropiate to have arrested the whole England squad for trespassing and immitating footballers in the World Cup Finals :whistling: in fact any fees they recieved in that bulging players pool should of been confiscated and given to charity!

Edit to remove a load of jumbled letters...not mine this time!

Its terrible when he is the worst hooligan England are producing these days, we cant even do this properly anymore.;)

  5. england paid top whack for one of the top managers on the planet. he has an impeccable track record and it's not his fault that the players are utterly incapable of the basics of modern football.

england's expectation levels are its biggest problem - they should appoint harry redknapp, have done with it and just accept that they're not, and haven't been for about 40 years, one of the top tier of football nations on the planet. in fact at present they're nowhere near. all the hype about the 'best league in the world' is nothing but marketing fluff.

He is the same manager no matter what he's paid and at league level a very good one, though its shocking after the Sven era that the FA cant get a manager to take what is one of the most prestigious jobs in world football for 1 million or so, and yes no matter what cr4p they ger off the press and public it still is a top job.

What should England expectations be? ...... before a ball was kicked we've players like J Terry who has been top drawer for years his CV shows this, Ferdinand who would get into any team along with A Cole, Rooney and possibly Gerrard, then Lampard who personally i thinkis over rated but has won Chelsea players of the season several times .... But i dont think many England supporters who know a bit about football thought this team would win the world cup as they couldnt qualify for a tournament recently and in the 6-8 years or so together theyve just not looked like a team, however their expectations were far higher then what the players offered and quite rightly so.

The best chance this team had was 4 years ago when they were all in their prime and in many peoples opinion had the best 11 players, but Sven and petulant Rooney managed to <deleted> that right up.

The Premier League is one of 2 leagues that can put claim to being the best in the world, its not hype its a fact that as a league it makes more money then any other hence they can buy the best players, but undoubtably Barca and Real attract the cream.

Finally did anyone notice Fat Boy Barry try running to defend for the 3rd and 4th goals, <deleted> me it was like he had cement in his boots, he reminded me of a 35 year old 16 stone John Barnes in his final days at Newcastle.

  6. BBC reporter on the Italians going out just went on about how no Inter Milan players were picked despite their successful season.

Now considering the champagne socialists at the BEEB spent twice as much money on reporting the WC then ITV .... taxpayers money i may add .... youd think the ignorant w4nker on the jolly would have done a little research to actually see how many Italians were regulars in the Inter team.

It'll be a great day for football when the PC BBC loses its WC TV rights it gets through antiquated no doubt illegal anti competition laws.

  7. My wife doesn't know who these people are Nelson Mandella, Kim Jung Il, Mother Theresa, Robert Amsterdam, the Pope, etc. She doesn't know in which country New York & San Francisco are located. She can't tell the difference between baseball & cricket, but she knows who the All Blacks are and that'll do me!!

Shouldnt have married an American then. ;)

Not sure how Robert Amsterdam makes that list though.

  8. This thread really is beyond asinine. The OP makes the absurd claim that Thai's are nationalistic with not one iota of proof.

Is playing the national anthem twice daily not even a little nationalistic.

Only if every Thai stops what they're doing and stands at attention twice a day. You're engaging in what I would call "grasping at straws." Don't try to find something that's not there.

What you mean that when i hear the national anthem play its not really happening, and all the people that stop and stand still that i see are actually still moving and im imagining it all.

NOw im aware this is a pain in the a$$ for most Thais but it certainly is meant to bring about some kind of nationalistic feeling.

Ive never called anyone apologist before but you are without doubt Thaivisa's no.1.

  9. i do wish people would stop referring to him as 'JT'. nothing personal at you smokie, just mean the world at large. it makes him sound cuddly and likeable rather than the massive, massive cun_t he is.

It does leave interpretation open though

Jerk and Tosser come to mind

dont understand why everyone hates JT so much. He's a great defender, should still be england captain and plays his heart out for england and chelsea, more than can be said for gerrard.

He has on the pitch been Englands best player so far IMHO, its just off the pitch where he just doesnt seem to have socials skills linked to a human that are is problem. ie his recent press interview .... every players knows to talk a lot without saying much.

  10. Seems as if the Germans and as German as what they used to be. :whistling:

To long-suffering England fans, Germany's footballers are an all-too familiar foe. But the side that the Three Lions will face in Sunday's World Cup clash is anything but representative of the old Germany. In fact, many of them wouldn't have even been able to play for the three-times World Cup winners, until a recent change in the country's strict citizenship laws.

A total of 11 of the current 23-strong German squad would have been branded foreigners under rules dating back to before the Nazis and would have therefore been ineligible to play only a decade ago.

  11. While I am no football expert by any means, I am 100% sure England would rather play Ghana instead of Germany.

Im not overly bothered about playing Germany over Ghana, if anything its better the devil you know.

The reason why its good to have won this group is because the route to the semi final is exceptionally easy, whereas England will have to play the Germans, Argentina and if Spain win their group we'll get them in the semis should they beat the other 2.

But also all the English on this and other threads have said well dont to the Americans and that theyve played well deserving top spot.

  12. ANYWAY...

I think England will beat Germany. Too much talent has been dormant too long in the WC and getting up to play Germany is a lot different than Slovenia, Algeria and USA . Good teams often have a harder time getting prepared for the underdog than they do when confronted with a top team. This Sunday, England is the underdog and it's Germany who will be taking England lightly despite what the German players might say in the press. I'm not trying to get on anyone's good side here, just getting back on topic and calling it like I see it.

England are slight favourites if the bookies are to be believed and as the saying goes theyre never usually wrong.

  13. Correction: 20/25%.

Even that is a ridiculous number. Thailand's economy is almost $300 billion per year, that would mean they are underestimating the amount of tourist revenue by $50 or 60 BILLION dollars per year. They know how many people come each year, how long they stay, and roughly how much they spend per day. Their figure is gonna be about right even if they're a bit off. Some people dramatically overestimate it's importance, especially those who've only been to Pattaya or Phuket.

But according to their figures tourism employs 20% or so, so its quite important im sure youd agree.

  14. In that context it certainly was...It was the very definition of a backhanded compliment...

OK strange person i will explain this to you -

    1. The following sentence i wrote was more a statement on what could happen, it was not a compliment nor a backhanded compliment -

America have a chance of fluking it to the final of this World cup as theyve potentially an easy route to the final ... a few draws along the way and winning on penalties as Argentina done in 1990 then who knows .

    2. Now this was the compliment -

though theyve played extremely well as a team and i take my hat off to them for that.

    3. Can you now explain to me how sepsis rhymes with YANK.

  15. Apologies for refering to you as a Septic

So where's that mod warning from the England WC thread about flames and insults now??? Turn about's fair play yes?

Its rhyming slang Septic Tank = Yank, you call us Limeys as a jibe and we really dont give a <deleted> about that ...... its akin to calling the Scottish .... sweatysocks ... but take offence if you wish and report me.

  16. Americans would no sooner discard the term "World Series" than the English would do away with the name "Premier" league even though they may not be the best league in UEFA.

Premier refers to it being the top league in the country. Just as Serie A refers in Italy to it being the top league there. That's where the claim ends.

The world is apparently still flat Rix.

It was not my intention to start an argument. It has been called the "World Series" for 107 years and it isn't going to change anytime soon. Let's leave it at that and return the thread to the topic of the World Cup.

Yes this argument is as as boring and predictable as the its called football not socccer debate.
  17. But you need to make sure you copy the Dutch coaching models, lots of five asides on small pitches plus training young players in every position. Rather than the English coaching model which is lots of weights sessions in the gym and learning to kick the ball as far as possible ;)

The size of your population is no guarantee of footballing success, look at the Solvenians pop 2 million who regularly qualify for top tournaments whereas Russia regularly miss out, also China footballs very popular but they are rubbish. I proper coaching philosophy like the dutch total football idea, which Johan Cruyff exported to Spain and is used at Barcelona, gives a much better chance of world cup success than a large population.

What is it with you Americans in your constant need to knock the English at football are you trying to tell me you couldnt learn a thing from the English at football?

And i am telling you as a fact Johan Cruyff did not export total football to Spain ... try Rinus Michels.

Not American my friend, English, and I think the Americans would be wise not to learn anything from the English regarding football.

As you were pointing out yourself on the England thread, where you put forward some very good criticism of the English youth system.

Apologies for refering to you as a Septic.

But the Americans wouldnt be going to local FA's that are run by the local lord or some other nepotistic connected person its the FA that im critical of ...... theyd be going to clubs like Man U, Arsenal etc who without doubt could teach a thing or 2 ... apply what the top few good footballing clubs do to all levels and no country would go too far wrong. (id be pretty sure theyve gone to these clubs already to see how they train, most clubs/countries do this)

But yes if they copy the English FA run by the oldboys network theyd be shooting themselves in the foot.

  18. The lady i am living with is writing the most honest CV resume ever, i am telling her everyone lies/exaggerates on their CV but she insists on doing it her way to my annoyance.

My CV is truly a great work of fiction.

  19. Take a look back at your contribution to the discussion about Green and you comments about anyone who felt he needed to be dropped.

Consider also whose opinion turned out to be shared by Mr Capello.

And so far its looking like a very good decision James was outstanding when called upon last night.

  20. I think what he is getting at is when the champions of MLB of NFL or NBA are crowned, they are crowned World Champions - which is a bit strange considering they are national leagues.

A matter of semantics. When those organizations were formed they were the only leagues which played those sports professionally so the league champions were obviously also the world champions. Baseball's World Series is not an international competition (except for Canada) but the teams in the MLB are made up of the best baseball players from around the world (with maybe the exception of Japanese/Iranian pitcher Yu Darvish) just as the European soccer leagues are made up of teams that include the best players from around the world. Likewise the NBA and NFL. Americans would no sooner discard the term "World Series" than the English would do away with the name "Premier" league even though they may not be the best league in UEFA.

    EPL = English Premier League.

Its only known as the English Premier League outside England i believe it is actually called Sponsors name then the Premier League.
