  1. I was in Big C in Lamphun on Sunday meeting a friend just over from England and he was surprised at the 11am to 2pm rule. At 1.45pm we ordered another tower of leo between five ex-pats and were told that no further beer was being sold and it was not until a thai friend became involved that we were allowed another 1 litre jug. It seems that all drinks must be finished by the customer at 2pm. The glasses also had the brand of beer covered up with tape. Only last week in Big C Hang Dong we were asked just before 2pm if we like to order another tower of beer. Whats going on?

  2. Barclays Life and Pensions was sold to a Swiss Insurance company about 3 years ago. I started receiving my Barclays pension at 60 when l retired and l took a lump sum (tax free) and a monthly pension which will not decrease when l get my state pension next year. I tried to get Barclays pension into m Bangkok Bank a/c but they told me that its their policy not to pay monthly pensions into an overseas account only a UK bank. My Prudential pension is paid into my Bangkok Bank a/c (via HSBC) and at no charge to me

  3. Went with my wife to the local land registry here in Chiang Mai and l had a yellow book within 15 minutes and it was free. No repeat visits and my wife just took along the blue book and her id. I just gave them a copy of my passport. I suppose it all depends on where you live as all land registry offices seem to have different rules

  4. The reviews l saw from the Uk say they were awarded a 4star from the European Safety Council which is more than other models in the range.

Only SUV's/PPv's in TH that score less than 4 stars are the Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-7. Fortuner, Pajero Sport, and Captiva also 4 stars.

Forgot about the Captiva but do not see many for sale second hand in Chiang Mai

  5. If primary use is around town, and you don't need to it be able to carry 5 passengers routinely or do road trips, it's not a bad car. Quiet, and smooth riding around town, but likes a drink and hates weight on board.

No known major problems at this age.

Tried to send you a pm as you are the expert. Reviews on the Honda CRV are mixed from the UK internet sites but they maybe different specifications but overall they were good. What fuel economy do you think l will get driving around town and on a long run. I like the car but is there any other vehicle of a similar type (ie Ford Escape) other than Fortuner,Pajero Sport or MU7 (like driving tanks) you think maybe better for me as these are to big for me and my wife to drive after l have had a few beers . Many thanks

  6. Did l read somewhere they were shit in a crash test. ?

The reviews l saw from the Uk say they were awarded a 4star from the European Safety Council which is more than other models in the range. Not thinking of crashing just yet

  7. I am thinking of purchasing a 2008 Honda CRV EL 4wd and 2.0 litre engine with 24k on the clock. I have searched the internet and have read mixed reviews about the CRV in the UK but not in Thailand where its specification is slightly different. I am not really interested in the Fortuner as it is far bigger than l require and l am not interested in off roading. Went very well on the test run. Do any TV members have any experience with this vehicle and l would appreciate any feedback you have.Thank you

  8. I was at immigration on Monday to do my 90 day reporting and the queues were well into the car park at 8.10am. I would not liked to have renewing my yearly extention or arranging a exit visa as l could have been there all day. Immigration do not seem to realise that the number of ex-pats retiring or working in Chiang Mai seems to be on the increase and processing 40 applicants a day for extentions of stay is insufficient. Also the premises are far to small to accomodate such a large gathering of ex-pats and telling people to keep coming back is not fair especially if they have travelled some distance

  10. Many establishments have come to realize that there is a captive market for the "western" holiday meals, and are getting on the bandwagon of charging double or triple of what they normally charge during the rest of the year. For instance last year the Shangri-la Hotel had a Christmas buffet at 549 baht (including tax and service) and the place was packed. The food selection was good, although they ran out of turkey, and the atmosphere was festive. This year the price is almost doubled. The other hotels are charging 1000 to 1500 baht or more. Although, converted to western currencies, the prices are still reasonable, but we are in Chiang Mai, and the prices are very expensive compared to the local economy. West is putting on a two sitting English style Christmas Dinner at 450 baht, which is fair.

It is nice that the hotels and other establishments want to cater to us expats, but I think that the price has become a little excessive, if not just downright greedy.

There are alternatives and I am planning to have some guests over and have order in a festive meal from a local Thai restaurant (my choice of western items) and hire a server to set up and clean up. I am sure that this can be done for about 300 baht per person.

The Christmas Dinner at West is very reasonable but where is it and is it any good

  11. Yes good for your wife to have a sense of honor and integrity and to step in and advocate for a stranger.. I'd be proud of her too and I hope the songtaew driver was cited for no registration of vehicle that transports passengers at a minimum..

I'll bet the farang driver was pretty stunned as well if he has been here for any amount of time.. I presume that he didn't speak Thai too well if at all?? Or was it her just taking the side of righteousness as well?

Songtaew probably owned by the BIB so no charges

  12. I went into Makro Hang Dong recently and what a great improvement. They have an excellent new wine/spirit section and lots of imported goods and much cheaper than Rimping. Although the Makro on the super highway is nearer to me l still go to the Hang Dong branch. They also have some excellent frozen fish at a reasonable price.
