  1. Does anyone know? I got an email from Qatar about this but details were minimal. Curious what the 'rate' is and if the miles can be used on booze, which is fairly cheap at Doha duty free.

The way I understand it, is that the whole array of products at the duty free is available.

I still would like to know before I fly in May what the going rate for 1000 Miles is.

I did get a reply to my query from Qatar Airways.

Seems monetary value of the miles is not fixed.

Depends on brand, item and level of membership. Gold members get extra rebate.

So that effectively answers my questions without answering anything.

  3. Since February this year it is now possible to buy duty-free in both terminals ( main and premium) paying with q-miles.

Since I always fly business-class and the routes I fly don't have 1st class I am unable to use my miles for upgrades, and I don't fly frequently enough to save enough miles for free business-class tickets before they expire.

Etihad has this option for several years now and I have bought some very nice items with my miles in the past.

Now to my question : have any of you used this option at Doha and if so what was the approx. monetary value of let's say 1.000 miles.

I'm in for some new quality cabin luggage, since mine is nearly falling apart after many, many years of good service.

    Thanks beforehand.

  4. There are more than those which are mentioned in the article. In the 70's and 80's I used to do London-Tokyo regularly via Anchorage or Moscow. The quickest you could do it was 17 and a half hours and on a bad day it would be in excess of 24. Just to add to the fun I used to get to my final destination of Hiroshima on the Bullet Train about 6 hours after reaching Tokyo. Hey Ho; such fun remembered !

Obviously there are other longish flights.

The article however is for direct flights USA/Asia.

Did the high speed trains (TGV) a couple of times i.e. Paris/Brussels or Cologne. Great fun !!!

  5. I was hoping, that the astute art travel agent would be pulled out of the hat by someone, .. alas ....

What I am after is find better business class deals. May be tough to find, wait listing is normally not an option, seats are rarely sold out, I guess. Plus, if I spoil myself, I want to spoil myself rotten, i.e. lie-flat seats to make the expense worthwhile, which limit sthe airline selection severely.

If you're not willing to do some homework to get what you want, don't expect us to do it for you.

I spent about half an hour a day to keep myself informed so could you.

But anyway once again , for business class (on board service and comfort) Oman Air can not be bettered but little bit more expensive than Qatar, the choice is yours.

  6. Since I'm mentioned I would like to elaborate on my findings.

Airlines pay commission to booking agents varying from 10% to 0% (Yes some don't give commissions).

Online booking agents are by nature inflexible regarding individual bookings.

A GOOD travel agent may drop some of his/her commission i.o. to get the booking, this usually for regular customers only.

    Just my experience though.

The big problem is finding a good, reliable travel agent.

I'm fortunate to have found one.

  7. While we are waiting for smedley's translation: I just transited at the LH Lounge in FRA. Frankfurter with Loewensenf (good mustard) and potato salad, accomanied by a fresh beer from the tap... Heaven! smile.png

Hot dogs and mustard with beer to wash it down? Sounds like they really put on a gourmet feast at LH Frankfurt.

I've done that transit. Forget the food, the beer is excellent!

That sums it up very nicely for Frankfurt Airport. clap2.gif

  8. Hi Craig,

Nice list. Been to most of the Thai ones, however ages ago so my experiences where a tat different from what they would be now.

To give an example, my favourite place in Thailand used to be Krabi. Been there for a short visit just a few days ago.

Might as well have stayed in Pattaya. Nearly as expensive as Phuket is for very mediocre restaurants, hotels etc.

One of my experiences is worth mentioning. We where too late (the 4 of us) for the free hotel shuttle so had to take the local TukTuk to return to our hotel, i.e. Aonang Phupetra Resort. I asked the price to the first TukTuk that stopped and he said 50 Baht per person. He wouldn't lower the price so we decided to take 4 TukTuk's. He wasn't happy. clap2.gif

I still have a few tricks up my sleeve.

  9. They know what the costs are so why not be up front with them, Thai Airways and a number of other carriers show the full price in their ads so why not BA, they wouldn't get away with it in the UK.

Allow me to be surprised about above statement.

Does that mean you changed your stance on Air Asia also ?

Why on earth should you be surprised, maybe you could enlighten?

I don't recall having a stance on Air Asia's pricing policy, but of course they should publish the all in fare, which budget carriers are required to do in many countries.

BA are a national carrier and should quote the all in fare in their adverts, they do so in the UK and most other countries so why not here, as I have said many other carriers include the "extras" in their headline figures.

You seem not to agree so maybe you could share your view?

My view is quite simple : price published = price to pay.

All the other pricing policies are designed to confuse the unwary, and in my book that's cheating.

That includes all airlines, travel agents, businesses etc.

    That's it really.

BTW if I offended you then I apologize.

  10. Hmmm...will have to try that. I also love French food, but it's usually fairly expensive. Thanks!!

Not really that more expensive if you stay away from the more expensive wines. Jose (the proprietor) has a couple of good house wines, at very reasonable prices. Have your wife try the "tarte aux pommes au Calvados" for desert and you'll have scored some very high points.

Jose is a bit of a character but a very good host and very liberal with the Calvados. Know him for 20 plus years.

His signature dish is the "6 hours lamb" and it's an experience in itself.

    Bon appetit mon ami !!

  11. Wifey and I have been looking for a good Indian restaurant. Thanks for the recommendation!

Has anybody tried Ticino on the dark side? Setting looks great.

i have been there a few times Craig.

the setting is nice but i hate the plastic chairs and the mossies

otherwise the food and service is first class

Mossies was my initial concern also. The pics look great. Guess we'll just have to wear long pants (ugh!). Thx!!

Been there twice a long time ago when they were still at their former location (50 meters from where they are now).

Was very disappointed and haven't been since, but regularly hear good things about it.

Anyway my favourite restaurant is " Au Bon Coin" on Pratumnak hill, very good French food bistrot style.

But then again I love anything really French.
