  1. One good departure time that I like to use is the AirAsia flight FD3238 11:45 URT-DMK or FD3185 12:10 from NST-DMK. I can then take the 8:00 catamaran from Nathon, and usually arrive around 11:00 just in time to catch those flights.

I did this exact journey last week. Was great. Arrived at Surat airport about 10.55 for an 11.35 flight. The cost of the high speed cat and bus combo was 700 baht.

One more thing to bear in mind when comparing Air Asia to the other local budget airlines, is that AA charge a fee to check bags. Others do not.

I did my return jounrey with Thai Lion air, who were great, dont charge fees to check bags (up to 15kg free), and are generally cheaper than AA.

  2. I have bought many motorbikes over the last 12 months. I have never required a certificate or residence from the SELLER. However, as the BUYER, I have always needed one. From the seller (if a farang) all I have needed are the signed transfer of ownership forms, and copies of passport - ID page and exit stamp.

Will government offices be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day? (if so, strange for a Bhuddist country, no?)

In particular Im interested in the Immigration Office and the Transport Office.

  4. Also i have noticed that some bikes gave lights but they have something large in the front basket which blocks the lights

    THIS ^^^^

I understand that sometimes the light breaks and the rider doesnt know, especially with the back light. But to consciously place a large bag of shopping, or a dog/child/buffalo, in front of your light and blocking them is just plain ridiculous and asking for a crash.

As for helmets. Personally I wear mine about 50% of the times, depending on where I am going. And yes I know I should wear it 100% of the time.

In the 5 years I have lived here things are improving. Id say that 5 years ago less than 2% were using helmets. That has to be about 15-20% these days. But it'll never completely change.

  5. Are there any definite rules as to what can and cannot be done at the Lipa Noi transport office?

e.g. I went there this morning with a Honda Click to change the name on the green book to my name. Even though the plate on the bike is a Surat plate, I was told that they cannot do this for me in Samui, because the bike was registered in Surat Thani, and not Samui. They also mentioned that because the address of the previous owner was in Nakhon Si Thammarat that this was a problem also.

I was always under the impression that any Surat platae can be changed in Samui, but for any non-Surat plate I had to travel to Surat Thani town to change.

Can anyone offer anything more definite?

  6. 2000 for a scratch is over the top. New plastic for the whole bike in factory paint is 2000. So obviously a scam. But if you call the police the price will go up and you still have to pay. TIT

2000? Are you sure? Please tell me where I can buy a whole new body for the bike for 2000 and I will take all my bikes to this place to be fixed.

  7. You can take the bike to Nathon DLT office and they will transfer the book into your name. Samui comes under Surat Thani anyway. If you drive through Nathon heading towards Lamai you need to take a right as if you were going to Nikki beach. On the right hand side before you get to the bend is what would be described as an MOT garage back in the UK. Take your bike there and they will take a rubbing of the frame number and the engine number. I think it costs around 70 Baht. They will then give you a form to take to the DLT which is past Niklki beach and is a turning on your left before you get to the turning for the Raja ferry. They will then transfer the book into your name no problem thumbsup.gif

Is this true for ANY bike, ie a BKK plate or a Pattalung plate? or Just for Surat Thani plates that were registered outside of Samui?

Is immigration closed today or not? I need to go this afternoon........

Well, is it a government office or not????

I dont know. I assume it is? But it was open anyway so I was ok.
