  1. George Russell and Max Verstappen are leading calls from drivers for Formula 1 cars to be raised for the sake of their health and safety. Russell said the violence drivers experience when cars hit bumps on track at high speed was "unsustainable". World champion Verstappen raised the topic with governing body the FIA at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. "End of the straight with full load, the impact is too high with the low ride-heights," Verstappen said. The Red Bull driver said that his intervention with the FIA, in the drivers' briefing in Bahrain last weekend, was "just some advice to look ahead". The problem was "our comfort, our spine, compression over the bumps," Verstappen told BBC Sport. He added that F1 "had to revise that" for the new regulations that are being introduced in 2026. But he said he was concerned that the FIA was not addressing the matter sufficiently in the new rules, which are due to be finalised in June. "We still run very low but I don't think the 2026 car is going to be any different," Verstappen said. The problem has arisen following the introduction of new rules in 2022 which brought back ground-effect cars with venturi underfloors. These floors are an inverted wing that creates a low pressure area under the car, producing prodigious aerodynamic downforce. But to work most effectively, the cars have to be run very close to the ground and with stiff suspension to control the car's ride-height. Verstappen says his father Jos is 'not a liar' READ MORE
  2. Wales have changed their centre partnership to face France in the Six Nations on Sunday in Cardiff. Joe Roberts and Owen Watkin replace World Cup pairing George North and Nick Tompkins, who have been dropped. They are among five changes to the side beaten by Ireland, including a positional switch that sees captain Dafydd Jenkins start at blind-side flanker for the first time. Lock Will Rowlands and hooker Ryan Elias are also promoted to start. Rowlands, who plays his club rugby in France with Racing 92, starts for the first time since the World Cup alongside Adam Beard in the second row. Scarlets hooker Elias replaces Dee, who is now set to win his 50th Wales cap from the replacements bench where is joined by recalled Gareth Davies. Centre changes Tompkins and North have been Wales' established midfield partnership in the past year but have been left out of the matchday squad completely in a surprise move by Warren Gatland. Scarlets centre Roberts, 23, will make his Six Nations debut in only his second Test appearance, after wining his first Wales cap against England in their World Cup warm-up defeat at Twickenham last summer. Both of the new centres missed out on World Cup selection, but Roberts offers a left-foot kicking option in midfield while Watkin returned to start the Six Nations opener against Scotland. 3. England manager Gareth Southgate and Brentford boss Thomas Frank are among the options being considered by Manchester United if they choose to replace Erik ten Hag at the end of the season. (ESPN) Barcelona remain interested in Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to replace Xavi, who is leaving at the end of the season, but the Spanish club know it will be difficult to appoint him. (Relevo - in Spanish) Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City are battling it out to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich. The 29-year-old Germany international is looking to leave Bavaria this summer. (Express) Any club wanting to hire Brighton head coach Roberto de Zerbi this summer would have to pay the Seagulls £12.8m. Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester United have been linked with the Italian. (Mirror) Bayern Munich are ahead of Liverpool in the race to appoint Xabi Alonso as their next manager if the Spaniard chooses to leave Bayer Leverkusen in the summer. (Telegraph - subscription required) Liverpool are interested in appointing Richard Hughes as sporting director after the 44-year-old confirmed he will leave his position as Bournemouth's technical director at the end of the season. 4. Man City 3-1 Copenhagen (6-2 agg): 'We are a team that believes we can do it' - Pep Guardiola "We are a team that believes we can do it." When you look at Manchester City's form in Europe and domestically, manager Pep Guardiola's words should be a surprise to no-one. The Champions League holders swept aside Copenhagen 6-2 on aggregate to reach the quarter-finals for the seventh successive season and become the first English club to win 10 consecutive matches in the competition. Manchester City cruise into Champions League quarter-finals They did it despite leaving seven players out from the side that beat Manchester United on Sunday, with half an eye on this weekend's showdown with Liverpool at Anfield - as City bid to become the first side to win four English top-flight titles in a row. And, as City remain with the chance of a historic double Treble, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand described them as a "juggernaut that needs to be stopped". The ease with which City booked their last-eight spot alongside Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Real Madrid suggests no-one will relish a two-legged encounter with the holders when the draw is made on 15 March. And Guardiola feels it underlines a change of mindset at City since he arrived at the club in 2016. "We arrived here from Barcelona and Bayern Munich, where the demand is to always be there," he said. "I felt the club - not the players - didn't feel it. "Managers and hierarchies don't get time, but they gave us time to lose against Monaco [2017], against Liverpool [2018], against Tottenham [2019]. "It is easy for clubs that have big history - start with the best ones: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Manchester United, they have been used to it. "Coming here, it was not about one person from Catalonia saying 'now we are going to win the Champions League'. They gave me time. READ MORE

  8. Jonny Bairstow says he is set for an "emotional week" as he becomes the 17th man to play 100 Tests for England. Yorkshire batter Bairstow will reach the landmark in the fifth Test against India in Dharamsala, 12 years after making his debut against West Indies. "It's an amazing week, an amazing place and an amazing occasion," Bairstow told BBC Sport. "To be out there with some of your best pals, enjoying the occasion. I'm really looking forward to it." Bairstow, 34, follows Ben Stokes to a century of England caps, after the captain achieved the milestone in the third Test of the series. Bairstow's journey has not been as straightforward as contemporaries like Stokes and Joe Root. Whereas Bairstow is England's second-longest-serving current player after James Anderson, he has missed 51 of the Tests played since he made his debut at Lord's in 2012. I hope Lyon is a game-changer for me - Hartley TMS podcast: Bairstow the centurion Injuries have played a part, most notably a horrific broken leg sustained on a golf course in 2022, but Bairstow has also had spells when he has been left out of the side. "Throughout the whole journey of being an international sportsman and a sportsman in general, there will be challenges," Bairstow told BBC Sport. READ MORE

  10. Prolific Manchester City striker Erling Haaland says he can still improve despite having scored 80 goals in 84 appearances for the Treble winners. Last week the 23-year-old Norway international scored five in City's FA Cup fifth-round win at Luton. He won last season's Premier League Golden Boot and is top of this season's standings despite missing nearly two months with a foot injury. "There's a lot of things I can become better at," he said. Despite scoring in Sunday's Manchester derby, Haaland referenced his incredible miss - when he somehow put the ball wide of an empty goal when he was barely three yards out - as evidence there is more to do. "People say I'm good at scoring goals but I missed the biggest chance in the world ever two days ago. I can also become better at that," he added. Haaland appears to have immense mental strength. His staggering scoring statistics come despite being top of the Premier League's 'big chances missed' metric with 26. At the weekend, he put the miss he spoke about out of his mind to seal City's victory over United as they maintained their quest to become the first English club to win four successive top-flight titles. It has not always been the case. "It's been a challenge," he said. "When I was young, I would start crying if we lost and I missed a lot of chances. I've been working on it a lot and it's been a challenge. "I demand a lot from myself and my team-mates demand a lot from me." Haaland could hardly have had a better debut campaign in English football last season - his 52-goal tally is the most anyone has scored in all competitions in the Premier League era. Only Everton's Dixie Dean, who scored 63 goals in 1927-28, has ever scored more in a single English season. Despite his immediate success, Haaland has maintained his focus and determination. (Football Insider) Crystal Palace are drawing up a list of centre-back targets with England defender Marc Guehi, 23, expected to be sold this summer for a fee in excess of £50m. (Telegraph - subscription required) Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is Barcelona's top target to succeed Xavi at the end of the season, although the Portuguese manager is also believed to be of interest to Liverpool. 12. Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of Formula 1's governing body, allegedly told officials not to certify the Las Vegas circuit for its race last year. The claim is from the same whistleblower who accused Ben Sulayem of allegedly telling officials to overturn a penalty to Fernando Alonso in Saudi Arabia last year. The whistleblower says they were told "on behest of the FIA president" to find a way not to pass the circuit safe for racing. The claim is in a report by the FIA's compliance officer to its ethics committee. BBC Sport has seen the report. A FIA spokesperson said: "From a sporting and safety perspective, the Las Vegas circuit approval followed FIA protocol in terms of inspection and certification. "If you recall, there was a delay in the track being made available for inspection due to ongoing local organiser construction works." The report quotes the whistleblower saying they were contacted by their manager, "who on behest of the FIA president instructed him to find some concerns to prevent the FIA from certifying the circuit before the weekend of the race". The compliance report quotes the whistleblower as saying that "the purpose was to find fault with the track in order to withhold the licence". It adds: "Asked to be more specific, [the whistleblower] said that issues on the circuit were meant to be artificially identified regardless of their actual existence, with the ultimate goal of withholding the licence." The whistleblower said they tasked an official with performing this task, and named two further officials who were in the room at the time. BBC Sport is not identifying the people named in the report. READ MORE

  15. Book smart, reading and retaining knowledge doesnt make you a "nice" person in the process. It simply means you can retain knowledge. Life experience or "street smart" is another form of intelligence. People think that because they speak the same language they are understood, which is not always true, how people perceive what you have said may not be your intent, you cant know what their perception is going to to be hence we get misunderstandings or "taken the wrong way".To say nothing of IQ level that they have clue what your on about, people assume they do. As Forrest said " life is like a box of chocolates, ya never know what you gonna get" and thats true of people until you start interacting with them and figure them out.

  22. Alessia Russo scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal overcame local rivals Tottenham in front of a sellout crowd at Emirates Stadium. The England striker smashed the ball home from close range early in the second half after Kim Little and Beth Mead combined to create the chance. Victory keeps Arsenal firmly in the Women's Super League title race, three points behind leaders Manchester City. Tottenham stay sixth as their winless run extends to four games. The official attendance of 60,050 is the second-highest in WSL history, just short of the record 60,160 at the Emirates for Arsenal's win over Manchester United in February. Jonas Eidevall's side dominated throughout but after Russo stabbed just wide from a corner early on, they struggled to create any chances of note in the first half. Spurs defended deep, giving the hosts no space to play around the penalty area, and provided a threat on the break. It was Jessica Naz - who started ahead of club captain Beth England - who came closest to opening the scoring when her shot was tipped on to the crossbar by Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger. Arsenal started quickly again in the second half and this time they did find the breakthrough. Little lifted a lovely diagonal ball from the corner of the penalty area to Mead, whose control was superb before she fought through the challenge of Amanda Nilden to tee up Russo. The former Manchester United forward duly thumped the ball into an unguarded net from six yards out for her sixth league goal of the season. Arsenal continued to control the game but a second goal was not forthcoming and despite Spurs showing a little more as an attacking force late on, Russo's goal was enough to secure a seventh straight home win for the Gunners - the first time they have managed that in a single WSL season. Arsenal made to work but title hopes remain This was a long way from a vintage Arsenal performance but, ultimately, they got the job done. Putting on a show for a bumper crowd in north London would have been nice but given such a quick turnaround for those players who had been away on international duty, that was always going to be a tough ask. It was made even harder by a stubborn and well-drilled Tottenham side, who came to frustrate their hosts, doing so for much of the game, and showed enough on the break to keep Arsenal's defence on their toes. Arsenal were guilty of trying to be too intricate at times in the first 45 minutes given how congested the penalty area was, often turning down the chance to shoot in favour of another pass to try to create a better opportunity that, time and again, did not arrive. There were a change of tack almost immediately after the interval with Katie McCabe trying her luck from distance, giving Tottenham's defenders something else to think about. Two minutes later, Arsenal were in front as they found space in the 18-yard box for the only time in the match thanks firstly to Little's pass then Mead's touch and determination to force the ball across goal for Russo as Nilden challenged her from behind. Chances remained hard to come by after the goal but Arsenal had done enough. READ MORE
  23. First Test, Wellington (result) Australia 383 (Green 174*; Southee 5-70) & 164 (Lyon 41, Phillips 5-45) New Zealand 179 (Phillips 71; Lyon 4-43) & 196 (Ravindra 59, Lyon 6-65) Australia win by 172 runs Scorecard Spinner Nathan Lyon took six for 65 as Australia wrapped up a 172-run win over New Zealand in the first Test in Wellington. The hosts were dismissed for 196 before lunch on day four as Australia went 1-0 up in the two-match series. New Zealand had started the day on 111-3 chasing a victory target of 369. Lyon, 36, dismissed Rachin Ravindra, Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips inside the first hour to set the tone as he claimed a 24th Test five-wicket haul. Daryl Mitchell and Scott Kuggeleijn offered some resistance with a 36-run partnership for the Black Caps' seventh wicket but all-rounder Cameron Green, whose 174 not out in the first innings was instrumental to Australia's success, dismissed the latter for 26. Mitchell batted on despite taking a blow to the helmet from a Green delivery and was the last man out for 38, while captain Tim Southee was Lyon's sixth victim - and the off-spinner's 10th in the match. The defeat leaves the Black Caps with only one win in 24 Tests against their nearest neighbours this century. The second match in the series starts in Christchurch on Friday. Australia captain Pat Cummins praised Lyon and player of the match Green for their performances. "Cam was amazing, he was really the difference in the end," he said. "I thought the way he went about it, with that intent, really put the pressure back on the bowlers on day one. "There was as much bounce as I've seen in any wicket for a long time but thankfully it spun which, with Nathan in our side, is always a pretty good thing." New Zealand pace bowler Will O'Rourke is a doubt for the second Test after leaving the field with a tight hamstring on day three with Southee not ruling out an instant recall for veteran pace bowler Neil Wagner, who retired last week. 24. LeBron James became the first NBA player to reach 40,000 career regular-season points in Saturday's game against the Denver Nuggets. But he described it as "bittersweet" after his Los Angeles Lakers side lost 124-114 to the defending NBA champions. "Being the first player to do something, it's pretty cool in this league," said the 39-year-old, who scored 26 points on the night. "You just know the history, you know the greats that have come through." James scored the historic basket with 10 minutes and 39 seconds remaining in the second quarter with a driving lay-up from the left side of the basket to give the Lakers a 37-32 lead. The crowd gave James a standing ovation during a timeout and the ball he used to reach the milestone was removed from the game. However, the Nuggets stretched their winning streak to six games thanks to 35 points from Nikola Jokic to leave James with mixed feelings. "The main thing is always the main thing and that's the win," he said. "And I hated that had to happen in a defeat especially versus a team that plays extremely well. "We played some good basketball but weren't able to close it out, so [it's] bittersweet, but I enjoyed every moment on the floor." READ MORE
