  1. Sadly you don't have a leg to stand on. You should be thankful the owner is agreeing to give you a room at all.

You transfered money to him without a signed contract? Wow...did you send a card also? Without a written agreement, that was a gift. Hope you told him happy birthday as you handed over the cash. He has no obligation to give you anything at this point.

Consider this a lesson well learned. Never, never, never give someone money in Thailand without a written contract stating what the money is for, as well as a signed receipt or other proof of payment. You screwed up big time. Take your jacuzziless room and be happy you aren't being kicked out on the street.

And sign any contract they put in front of you at this point. Something is better than nothing, which is what you have right now.

Rubbish. There are both verbal and assumed contracts in place (how does he have the key in his hand then?).

The problem here is that the details of the contract have now been changed. It is therefore hard to prove. Having the old contract in hand would be a useful start.

That said, a legal battle in this case would be lengthy, draining and costly. Hardly worth it.

OP, what you should of done is to correct by hand the error and have both parties sign the correction. Then you should sign and initial the bottom of all pages to prevent any future changes or pages being added without your knowledge. This should be done for every written contract you ever come across in life.

  2. From a former language teacher's perspective, there is some scientific evidence that some (white, European-heritage) foreigners will have more trouble learning Thai potentially than the average Chinese and/or Indian, because of a gene that is linked towards proficiency in tonal languages. This gene is MUCH more common in countries where tonal languages are commonly spoken. It gives me more compassion for the people that I know who have genuinely tried to learn and been repeatedly frustrated (including some linguistic geniuses who are much better at multiple European languages than I am).

Frankly I would prefer to see evidence of the existence of the gene you talk about; language learning in infants and a tonal gene? So perhaps the !Kung Bushmen have a gene for their click?

I heard that it has to do with the left ( ? ) part of the brain, which apparently is not used in rational thoughts.. Just hearsaying..

It is the alleged gene that I think is questionable; infants are programmed to learn language and any child of any racial genetic history will learn to speak, in its early years whatever language to which it is exposed. I do not believe that there exists a gene such as Ijustwannateach claims and would like to see the scientific evidence he claims.

Witchcraft! Genes don't exist! DNA analysis is useless. ad nauseum

1 minute in google would give you plenty of reading material. Why wait to be spoon fed?

I'm no IT expert, but to me this looks to be a secure way to browse the net. Would be interested to see what other members think.

Unless your ISP sells your data to a company like Hitwise (which many, many do).

  4. Just to clarify my personal opinion here.

I am not in favour of piracy and will willingly pay for a good alternative.

I do not consider BBC Entertainment, with it antique array of programmes and endless repeats to be viable.

Nor is streaming, with my limited internet connection

I think most, if not all, of us who stream TV, or download UK television from P2P sites do so because this is the only way we can continue to watch UK television while abroad. If we could buy a UK TV licence and download directly from the UK stations then I for one would.

But unfortunately the powers that be in the UK refuse to give us that option so long live the P2P sites.

It's not a TV licensing issue but a rights agreement issue. You do not need a TV licence to watch catch-up BBC iplayer programmes, for example, but you do if you stream a live broadcast.

With some know-how or simply knowing how to search google you can download and watch BBC iplayer programmes anywhere in the world.

  5. Kindly remind the Embassy that those requirements do not apply to your wife as per EU law.

As far as I am aware it depends on what type of documentation is in the passport. I tried to find out earlier and am not sure I am any the wiser. If your wife has a UK residency permit in the passport there is no need for a Schengen visa but I know little about this and it seems to be something you need to apply specially for.

I was under the impression that if your wife has ILR and travels with you there is no requirement for a visa but some airlines are touchy about this. I thought this did not apply for TLR! Hopefully someone with greater knowledge will confirm or correct this!

You need a Schengen visa unless you have an EU family permit or residence permit. ILR is not considered to be the same unfortunately. Although technically it is; however the problem is one has been issued under EU law and the other UK law. One could just travel with the marriage certificate but would face a lengthy "discussion" at port of entry.

What I was referring to is the finance requirement. It is not applicable to a spouse of a UK national. All that's needed under EU law for a Schengen visa to be issued to such a person is the marriage certificate.

The Spanish are notorious for failing to apply EU law correctly.

  6. Flooding now at Bang Bon behind Central Rama II.

How far Behind Central Rama II?

    100 meter? 1 km? 5km?

Can anyone confirm? Because Rama II is the last link between BKK & the entire South.

Should have taken Thaksin advise and built the over-the-sea elevated road from BKK all the way to Phetburi (BangKhunTian to ChaAm if I remember correctly). We don't have to worry now.

It is still about 2 km from Central Rama 2. It hasn't crossed Ekachai yet, from what I can see, although it has crossed Kallaprapruek.

Just hit Ekachai in Bang Bon now 1700 hrs

  7. To the admin: though this post here does not contain direct information on where it's flooding I believe the information contains herein may benefit some readers. Please bear with it. Thank you.

Thanks. There is Informaton that we need.

The flooding of Bangkok is a slow process, the water flows at a slow walking pace which means that it should travel at least 20Km in a day. in the conduit which is Phaholyothin Road it doesn't, because it is filling all the infrastructure before it appears above ground; in this area it took hours to travel about 200meters on the surface.

Evacuation orders have been issued, but I felt that the house being dry there was no need. Am I living in a fool's paradise?

Food water is no problem but there is no infrastructure, when the loo is flushed it must be filling the system because it can't go trough the drains. So, like the roads, is the house going to flood from within when its infrastructure is full? How long can I afford to wait?

I suppose when the sink in the kitchen sends its waste to the downstairs loo, I shouldn't bring any more water in, is that when I leave?

Evacuation orders have been issued for this area, the authorities know what they mean, are they not telling us in order to avoid panic?

I would like to know the experience of posters who have lived through or are still living in the flood.

My situation is their's of weeks or months ago.

A colleague ignored the evacuation order because there was no water in sight. Then he ignored it because it was shallow and did not seem like a big issue. Now he is cut off. Dont hang around waiting for the water to arrive. It makes life harder for the authorities if people stay in affected areas and then need some kind of help.

Crush: on the other hand if you have a higher building and enough food and water and medication for a month (like we have) than it is doable to stay....just boring

Staying becomes a problem when they cut off the electric and if your ground floor is flooded it's likely to become a breeding ground for mossies. And don't forget all the critters will be looking to take shelter from the water too...

Edit: hope you've got gaffer tape or can get some. Tape up all low lying electrical sockets too as well as killing the circuits on the breaker. Don't forget the UBC wall socket too, especially if there's open space on the wall behind it.

  8. I've been hearing stories / tweets about Rama 2 being under threat now, and likely to become impassable within 2-3 days. Anyone been there / driven through recently? anything to see?

This is a big concern because this is the last avaiable route out of town to the west and south of Thailand. This would be bad news for the "supply chain" to Hua Hin and all points in the south.

Also, anyone who is still in Bangkok playing wait and see for the water to arrive on their doorstep will have one less exit route when it does happen.

I'm in Samut Sakhon now and no floods on Rama II yet. I'll be going to Central later today too. I used Rama II to go into Bangkok 2 days ago. Loads of traffic but no water.

They do expect it to hit in a couple of days though.
