  1. We have done it both ways. Having the check mailed, it goes to the embassy in BKK and when they get around to it they forward it. We are in Cha Am and were receiving the checks (my wife and I) anywhere from the 10th to the 20th of the month. Then we had to take them into the bank to deposit them, a major pain in the but as the bank is in Hua Hin and the traffic and the bank were very slow.

A few months bank we arranged with BKK Bank to have the direct deposit. We now get it on the third of the month and have a short drive to deposit it. You can't have an ATM card with the account that the check goes into. So we opened another account and move it into that account so we can take it out with ATM as we need it.

So far BKK Bank has been very efficient when we deposit them and usually no waiting. Very different from the service we received at Ayudhya bank in HH. So we are glad we made the switch.

    Hope this helps.

I agree - I have been using BKB (Kad Suan Kaew) that way for over two years and it works - after opening there is no charge but leave 200 or so baht in acct. After initial paperwork involved to open it takes only the usual withdrawal slip and passport in hand. (Take cash or redeposit into BKB savings acct.) People there have always been very professional, knowledgeable and courteous. From inception, however, it may up to take two month to complete and get rolling.

Using the BKK Bank New York route are there any monthly fees for US/TB exchange, direct deposit transactions, ATM international transaction withdrawl, etc.? (trying to think of anything else I get hit with the way I'm set now). I currently use a U.S. bank to have my retirement annuity deposited into and everytime I use an ATM here I'm seeing these fees show up. Just comparing what it would cost monthly if I go with BKK Bank New York and ATM from here. Thanks.

  2. Jeesch, scary indeed! Happy to hear you saw it first. I'm not surprised any more with what one might find around here. I got stung by a scorpion down in Chom Thong and just a couple weeks ago came face to face with a Burmese Python about 7 feet long (teenager) in our backyard. I'm always watching where I put my hands when reaching for things. See lots of the Golden Tree snakes and Checkered/Common Keelbacks around here but they're no worry.

  3. To doccument the 'micro-climate' rainfalls in areas around CM, to the N/S/E&W.....maybe we as residents of the CM area scattered in all directions could start our own rainfall records for our areas. Wouldn't cost much and we're already networked to cover the whole valley.

    Would be interesting......

or are there figures or a map would be preferable that show rainfall by month in the valley??

I've been monitoring Chiang Mai's weather for quite some time and have the data online http://thaiwx.yolasite.com/ . Down on the right side of the home page, "My WxUnderground page", you'll find earlier records.

  4. i think is done from cookie in your web browser . there register your search and from your email . key words that you had key in .

    sneaky bastard !!!

Hmmm, I guess I should delete my cookies more often then with seeing ads like "Find educated Thai Girls in BKK now and get 1000baht off!"

  5. GTF, I asked my wife and she told me a bakery shop called Pran Krua (sp?) has them. She lived in the States with me so knows what you're looking for. She described the shop's location as at the Surapee Rd. / Nong Hoy Rd. intersection and then up Surapee Rd about 100 m or so. Hope it helps.

  6. It's not over yet , it could be , but normally there is always a period of no rain before

another rather short period of rain comes in , after that the cold season begins .

Another option is a brief period of very hot weather. Think hot season, but only 1-2 weeks.

That has been my experience also.

ditto!! But I don't believe we will hit temps like we did this past May, 108.5 F (42.5 C).

  7. Scrubber,

Although GTF's offer would be hard to refuse, if you want to possibly make a few baht off it there's a thrift shop on Wua Lai rd. that deals in that kind of thing. Coming from Airport plaza going toward the city on Thipanet there's a " Y " in the road where Wua Lai branches off to the right. The shop is up about 300M or so on the right.

  8. Hello.

There are plenty of free website hosters on line you could use. The disadvantage as some see it is your domain (site name address) will have their name included, ex., Yoursite.theirName.com vs. Yoursite.com. If you don't mind that, it's free. Some have pop up ads that are annoying but others don't. I've been using Yola.com for over a year, no ads and has run 24/7, hasn't dropped out (yet?) The way they're setup you don't have to know a lot about site building. Have pre-made templates, etc.:)

  9. With a high pressure cell moving down from China we benefit with cooler night time temperatures. Soon I'll be able to sleep with the windows open, AC off, with a cool breeze again. 73 F (22.7 C) 2 mornings in a row.:D

  10. ...The closer the high and low pressure areas are together, the stronger the "pressure gradient", and the stronger the winds. On weather maps, lines of constant pressure are drawn which are called "isobars". These isobars are usually labeled with their pressure value in millibars. The closer these lines are together, the stronger the wind. The curvature of the isobars is also important to the wind speed. Given the same pressure gradient (isobar spacing), if they are curved anticyclonically the wind will be stronger. If the isobars are curved cyclonically the wind will be weaker. ...

This mornings synoptic (weather) chart (0700 local time) showed a high pressure cell over China with many isobars grouped together nearer to us. This probably contributed to the high winds earlier today.

  11. Index sells lighter weight genuine, imitation, artificlal simulated wood furniture that comes in segments to be assembled once inside.:)

Index Living Mall on the east side outter ring superhighway is pretty big with that sort of thing too.

  12. Hi Howard.

Also another place, going south from Chiang Mai toward Hang Dong on 108 (Chiang Mai-Hod Rd.) you'll see signs for Ban Tawai (to the left) as you enter the Hang Dong area. Ban Tawai has some interesting and beautiful furniture from many different shops to check out. Some shops can custom build your furniture at reasonable prices too.

  13. If you do get talked into replacing the muffler be aware! You may be told you are getting a genuine replacement part and charged accordingly but in actuality getting a Thai built/rebuilt genuine copy. I had that happen here where I had the choice a genuine Toyota muffler that had to be ordered from Japan and take 3 days or a Thai built custom fit installed a lot cheaper and right now. I opted for the genuine Toyota muffler and came back later to have it installed only to find out it was a Thai copy with a Toyota label slapped on it. Not saying there is anything wrong with the Thai one but the fact I was going to be charged for the more expensive option.

  14. IMHO, the posters who do nothing but try to start trouble and post nonsense in order to offend others are mostly social inadequates - on-line or off - and are people that you would spot immediately and avoid in real life.

I'm afraid that therapy will not help them. There must be another solution.

Drink more alcohol and they become less annoying.
