There is no faction in Syria that the US could align with that it is not aligning itself with an non extreme islamic group........it's a very dangerous position pushed at the governmental bodies.....forced (interest) agenda.........from the top

NOPE .......
I think the airport displays are a GREAT idea - put the mug shots of any and all involved and caught right there with it decrying the practice of obtaining/slaughtering beautiful animals along with current statistics and maybe some coverage - age appropriate ......
Put it right out there so many many travelers can see this....don't let these animals die in vain - let their last gift to this world contribute to an education - let them shine.....
Make it a display/deterrent for everyone - young/old/guilty/ignorant/rich/poor......

Coming from the US that USED to be a friendly place (have friends that have almost been jumped/fought because they accidentally bumped in to someone there) and is now a place largely of intimidation/overworked/worried/frightened people. Fortunately, size is on my side (not fat) so I've not been challenged.
Living close to Chiang Mai I actually do not experience any problems if I decide to greet somebody. Ususally I get a nod or smile in return, however, being a person on the shy side I don't go down the street looking to greet everyone that passes. If someone is presentably dressed and looks perplexed or is smiling I'll give them a hi or a nod just to be friendly. Sometimes in a situation a funny/witty comment helps everyone smile. Same out riding the bike in the neighbohood. I'm not a bar/pub crawler type (so that makes me automatically avoid some of the less desirable people) but will have a chat in a cafe if someone were to strike up a conversation with me.
Most of the expats I made friends with are caring/sharing people, however, I mix mostly with long termers and people that play the same sports/activities as I do so we have a basis for respect and commonality of interests. I've also been fortunate to meet some others (few because of my nature) that are OK. First sign of anything different/negative/real trouble I change paths.
I've actually found expats fairly open here. I think many of us come from a variety of backgrounds many of which are more reserved or cloistered and carry those traits with them here. Again, (being on the shy side) I find it easier here for me to be open. The ready smiles of the Thai's help in that regard.
If someone has that Fku look or attitude I won't waste my time - just as I wouldn't back home.
Yeah - I worry about the 50-60 crowd with the multi piercings, newly shaved heads, new tatoos and it makes me wonder. But not much different from some of the aging hippies/flower power/multi colored 60's hair people. I just don't know if they are a new crazy (learning curve) or have been that way for years (more predictible).
A couple of the nicest, most sincere people I know in the states have a lot of tats (met through business dealings) so you can't judge a book by it's cover alone. But as a general rule I don't go out of my way seek out these folks.
I do know - if I had to shave my head, get tats and piercings thinking I needed it to try and outwardly impress/draw people (at this age - 65) I'd have to believe I was doing something wrong......IMO.....

`I actually still play ball and at one time thought the backwards ball cap & sunglasses were a good look. Until my GF (filipina - gotta love 'em) at the time said she wanted a man - not a man child.....never worn that same look since.....
When I look around and see the 60ish shaved heads, (cancer in remission?), the flabby tatoos, the piercings, unflattering tank tops (stupid looking actually) I feel bad for them. Most women of substance (of integrity - like anywhere else in the world) are looking for something else/more.
When all is said and done a discerning person will find the "class" within themselves and someone else. At what level we wish to reach and attain is purely a matter of personal choice and reflecting own outlook and values of ourselves and our lives.....
If they/you are bottom fishing - don't be surprised with the "catch".....

No mention in the article about if the vehicle was heading to or away from the home. It is mentioned that the couple fought a lot. You would think the unfinished beer bottle might have fingerprints (or could be 3 weeks old) and if the attack took place in the house there should be some evidence located there also. No mention of a trail of blood which would seem to indicate leaving to seek medical help.
Testosterone (plastic boobs or not) versus testosterone "coupled" with tomboy versus the insecurity of a 73 (still vibrant looking) year old man involving money/partnership - business/relationship/marriage/jealousy/possession has TROUBLE written ALL over it with possibly 3 totally unsympatheic "victims" (one no longer with us to enlighten us) does not sound like a lovefest (maybe intially). Way too many possibilties here to even ponder - - - - - - this is Thailand.........
Many of us can consider ourselves fortunate to be "commenting/contributing???" on this forum rather than be caught right in the middle of something (sideways) like this....
Enjoy the full throttle lifestyle - but at you own peril.......for many of us that are not "streetwise" (but pretty much have had our own way in life) from practice but could be caught up in the maelstrom of free thinking Thailand this could/should be worth paying attention to.
Let the buyer beware.....

What a full sack of chicken shit. A few weeks ago he announced he was ready to come back and fight all charges against him.
Probably a stall tactic that allowed something different to take place - just like the world wide sport of negotiations......

It seems to me that you are visiting Thailand like you would visit Vegas - find a fancy hotel & see the sights. Thailand is more about the people, the culture, and exploring. I think if I remember correctly you posted before asking what/where/how and wanted to make a big stage for the girl friend. If I can remember further so advised you not to bring that type of girl friend. It's possible you are also repeating on here what your GF has been inclined to notice. Someone said that there is nothing more insecure than a foreign GF/wife in Thailand and that is very very true and it comes out in many ways. IF you - or her - are going to be a critical person then it can be hellish for the person that wants to enjoy themself.....if ONE of you is uptight and critical/controlling there is literally no place on earth that would be a paradise.
Thailand isn't about glitz and glam it's about getting out and about. See the temples, get around the people that smile (not the ones that smile because it's their job or for money)- it might rub off on you. It's almost like you've overwound yourself in a place that is more sabai sabai than you are used to. Yes - I think you started backwards. I would have gone to CM first and taken in the many sights and expeiences it has to offer(live here) lots to see and do and plan and you won't be stuck spinning around an island only to be surprised that it's tah dah - an island. People go to islands/beaches to enjoy the sand and lay out in the sun. You could realistically spent 3 weeks EXPLORING around the Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai/Mai Hong Song area of Thailand and taken in many different sights. I agree - forget the 5 star stuff - you could have saved yourself 1/2-2/3 of your vaction cost + opened yourself up for a most relaxed enjoyable experience. BKK - 3 days - see what you want to see and get out whether adult/cultural/wats/night life/shopping (Chatrium would have been a much better bet) - then get out.....find a big city that - well ISN'T a big city (Paris is the closest I've found).......
A big part of the charm of Thailand is the relaxed nature of it. You have not given yourself the chance to relax - or - to see what it has to offer - you're too busy being busy - almost like on a tour without the tour guide and baggage handlers.
Do yourself a favor - get to CM and slow down some. See the wats - Doi Suthep - Doi Inthanon - an elephant camp - maybe a river raft ride - there's some nice parks and waterfalls you can visit - there's zip lining - catch a Muay Thai boxing match - walk the night bazaar - there's longneck villages (tourist) but makes you take a look a a different life - go see the white temple and black temple in Chiang Rai...Get the 5***** (stars) out of your eyes (you're buying in to their agenda) slow down and enjoy the unique things to do and experience. Pai is a kick back place good for about 2-3 days. If you want to see the LOng necks, visit waterfalls, get mud on your face, etc there are one day tours by the bus station in Pai - leave about 6:30/back about 8PM - full day. The town has an interesting collection of people and fun stroll through the night market - Pairadise Inn is a nice friendly place to stay there and won't break your wallet (if someone is making you feel like you need to break your wallet to do it right there's a warning there - even if that someone is yourself).....go out and travel some of the side roads to the elephant camps and stop in a hot spring and soak - - - - - but for God's sake remember how to laugh at and enjoy things - - let down a little and enjoy - take lots of pictures so you won't remember the "inconveniences" of your holiday....the last night of your visit to CM go to the Khun Khuntoke and enjoy the food and the show (Northern traditional & Thai traditonal dancers and shows - plan 2 1/2 hours) - take a little different approach and you might just find this place growing on you......

240 = 11,000 + THB
Have seen some apts advertised at 3900THB per month with AC & Wifi - saw it Sunday
That would lighten his load some for other expenses........
Plenty of condos at the 3500-4000 THB range - not fancy but do have AC - usually not a kitchen...
It'll not be the best budget but not the worst either.....

There's a house down the road from us (for rent)that has about a 4-5 foot deep hole underneath running along about 6-8 feet of the slab - went and got a flashlight and shined it in and it was about 20 feet under the slab......went and spoke to the neighbor & he said he had a similar problem and two rooms of his house could't be used in the rainy season due to mold infiltration/water pooling under the house....he also indicated the house that I had looked at was always plagued by snakes showing up indoors (imagine they just loved that cool "basement") - glad I didn't stick my head in there for a closer look.....
Walking by one day a LARGE Monitor lizard rumbled across the street I watched it disappear at that house (high walled yard).
Poor build or possibly a pressured water pipe leak could also cause this.....if it's a large area about the only thing to do is open the floor and fill the cavern with cement fixing any leaks and/or running the feed pipes overhead (they tend to be cheap charlies in the piping they use/choose when building) ..... if I were you I'd look for another house....

Simple Dont flick a fag butt in the street and voila no fine
Yes but he tossed it down a storm drain so they have no proof and it is not littering the street which is what the law should be concerned about. So shake down indeed. 2000 Baht is the standard fine for this.
Don't necessarily agree with that logic - the filters stay intact and if done by a great many people could glog the drainage system somewhere down the line - especially with BKK's drainage problems & really no different than tossing it in a canal - just an enclosed one ----- or the river would look like a floating ashtray (it's already bad enough).....it was a thoughtful thoughtless act.....disrespectful (to me) but a lot of smokers are a disrespectful lot/breed......
Pack it in - pack it out......

Let's see - someone is driving a van with 6 passengers in it and someone slaps the driver on the back of the head @ 80-100 KPH?
Given the possible consequences of this act of stupidily - the slapper should have been charged - the driver could argue rightfully that this action could have caused a tragedy and he was fearful for his life/well being as well as the other passengers in the van.....
Driver did well and got a bad deal.....then has to take them to Pattaya???????

What little idea people have about poverty. How can someone call the richest country in the world USA poor? The main reason ex-pats come to Thailand is because Thailand is poor and their country is rich. Therefore, their money is worth more. Simple stuff isnt it?
Nope - totally do not agree - if rich is spending beyond your means - taxed beyond your comprehension & having your dreams short ciruited - that's the US...if you want to believe that your RV makes you better than the man next to you (when he could buy you twice over) you're in the wrong campground......Thailand gives you an honest chance to amend/reclaim yourself (as you wish or forsee your own future).......
Get over yourself (what little of it it is you perceive) expats that have been here awhile cultivating the nuances that come with the Thai lifestyle embrace and re-embrace it.....there's a reason for that......
Ugly americans need not apply.......
Pretend you are a big deal - then deal yourself out - - this is a nice country - go back if it's not good enough for you.....
-
I agree - shelling out a disproportionate amount of $$$$$$ for a "condo" smaller than decent sized hotel rooms is a stupid option (unless you want to flaunt Darwin's theory).......
"Buying" here in many ways is a trap (many traps actually depending on approach/circumstance) as are the 30 year leases.........
It's a fools game in which many times we are only too happy to oblige as a trusting farang.....
I like to live far enough from a major city that I can drive in and enjoy what a city has to offer....(I've done that everywhere I've lived) ..... mostly houses here - condos seem located in citified areas - I don't like living in hives....if I wished there are enough rental condos that if I wanted to have a second place for city flings it would be easy - but to buy - noooooo......
I'd be willing to bet that most are """influenced""" into buying decisions by sincerely interest others (their wishes - our $$$$$) - I'm also willing to bet that at least 50% of these work out to our dismay (and their gain)......
-
Interesting - three friends that just came back from US (citizens) just came back with sticker shock from there on items they shopped for.....
My container - which also had a vehicle in it cost $2600 - Oakland to Laem Chabang - might want to shop around on that.....
I was advised that unless the furniture was very special or well built not to bother - some stuff does not do well in this climate + I like the teak and the pricing is reasonable for quality furniture (hard to find real quality in the US).
Some things like hot tubs, BBQ's, and I guess pool tables are much more costly here. I brought over a new wet smoker & was glad I did - the LPG place had to convert the hose but got it to work - not sure if the fill system is the same here as the US for filling a US tank....if you like to BBQ that might be one item to consider....
-
"Yes, they do sell the Best Foods brand in large plastic bags and it makes it much cheaper"
I think the big bag at Macro is 67THB - the jar in Rim Ping 109THB (15 oz) - wife says the bag could fill 2 jars.....
Don't know what she uses to make the 1000 Island - tastes good and I eat it.....

As much as "we" like to condemn the refusal to take these refugees it is a big problem for Thailand or any other country.....The funds to handle the situation is a concern certainly...one only has to loolk at the US under invasion from the Mexican side - the cost is huge in crime, innocent lives, welfare, social programs, and education for MANY that are innocent people bolting from one situation to another. A percentage of folks from Mexico are earnest about living and contibuting to a "better" life and the blessings that come with it.
The flip side is here - the Rohingyans also seek a better life but unlike others they are Muslims' and the track record for peaceful Muslim integration and societal/religious melding/peace is abysmal....going back centuries...there is no peace to be found for anyone. The current news story/situation solidifies that. These restless people are safer here (Thailand) than they are in their own country. Sympathy goes out to them but on the larger scale it is a very complex issue. Is there ANY doubt that Thailand would be better off without the problems of the south? None. These people are not happy to co-exist - if the initial ones are; they are followed by a more radicalized edition that "educates" in the mosques, - breeding grounds......Their movement does not care how many are slaughtered - or how many 100's of years it takes - it's been going on for over 800 years for God's sake...it's a slow - determined march and ultimately the failures - such as the Rohingyans are now suffering only serve to untimately spread a deadly doctrine ..... there is no winning position - send them back = slaughter....keep them = dissention/unrest/revolt/violence/ignorance and overthrow (going on now - kill the teachers and peaceful forward planners).......how does any country win?
I was taught a long time ago - NEVER-EVER- ACCEPT or invite trouble into your livingroom - that was good advice then ..... and it's good advice now - - if it were my choice - no matter how hard or heart wrenching it would be; I would make the decision best for MY country....in this case it is now Thailand and I'm glad I do not have to make the choices......

If you go to immigration (cheapest way to go) the form is good for 30 days (last one I did in CM took 3 weeks and 5-6 visits to finally get).....If closer and you want to spend the $50 you can go to the Embassy (US in my case) - statement of fact - address - notorized - and that form is good for 90 days/3 months here in Thailand.....

Run out of $$$$$$ - but knows where it is here and would like to come back to "manage" it...........
