  1. NOPE .......

I think the airport displays are a GREAT idea - put the mug shots of any and all involved and caught right there with it decrying the practice of obtaining/slaughtering beautiful animals along with current statistics and maybe some coverage - age appropriate ......

Put it right out there so many many travelers can see this....don't let these animals die in vain - let their last gift to this world contribute to an education - let them shine.....

    Make it a display/deterrent for everyone - young/old/guilty/ignorant/rich/poor......

  2. Coming from the US that USED to be a friendly place (have friends that have almost been jumped/fought because they accidentally bumped in to someone there) and is now a place largely of intimidation/overworked/worried/frightened people. Fortunately, size is on my side (not fat) so I've not been challenged.

Living close to Chiang Mai I actually do not experience any problems if I decide to greet somebody. Ususally I get a nod or smile in return, however, being a person on the shy side I don't go down the street looking to greet everyone that passes. If someone is presentably dressed and looks perplexed or is smiling I'll give them a hi or a nod just to be friendly. Sometimes in a situation a funny/witty comment helps everyone smile. Same out riding the bike in the neighbohood. I'm not a bar/pub crawler type (so that makes me automatically avoid some of the less desirable people) but will have a chat in a cafe if someone were to strike up a conversation with me.

Most of the expats I made friends with are caring/sharing people, however, I mix mostly with long termers and people that play the same sports/activities as I do so we have a basis for respect and commonality of interests. I've also been fortunate to meet some others (few because of my nature) that are OK. First sign of anything different/negative/real trouble I change paths.

I've actually found expats fairly open here. I think many of us come from a variety of backgrounds many of which are more reserved or cloistered and carry those traits with them here. Again, (being on the shy side) I find it easier here for me to be open. The ready smiles of the Thai's help in that regard.

If someone has that Fku look or attitude I won't waste my time - just as I wouldn't back home.

Yeah - I worry about the 50-60 crowd with the multi piercings, newly shaved heads, new tatoos and it makes me wonder. But not much different from some of the aging hippies/flower power/multi colored 60's hair people. I just don't know if they are a new crazy (learning curve) or have been that way for years (more predictible).

A couple of the nicest, most sincere people I know in the states have a lot of tats (met through business dealings) so you can't judge a book by it's cover alone. But as a general rule I don't go out of my way seek out these folks.

I do know - if I had to shave my head, get tats and piercings thinking I needed it to try and outwardly impress/draw people (at this age - 65) I'd have to believe I was doing something wrong......IMO.....

  3. `I actually still play ball and at one time thought the backwards ball cap & sunglasses were a good look. Until my GF (filipina - gotta love 'em) at the time said she wanted a man - not a man child.....never worn that same look since.....

When I look around and see the 60ish shaved heads, (cancer in remission?), the flabby tatoos, the piercings, unflattering tank tops (stupid looking actually) I feel bad for them. Most women of substance (of integrity - like anywhere else in the world) are looking for something else/more.

When all is said and done a discerning person will find the "class" within themselves and someone else. At what level we wish to reach and attain is purely a matter of personal choice and reflecting own outlook and values of ourselves and our lives.....

If they/you are bottom fishing - don't be surprised with the "catch".....

  4. No mention in the article about if the vehicle was heading to or away from the home. It is mentioned that the couple fought a lot. You would think the unfinished beer bottle might have fingerprints (or could be 3 weeks old) and if the attack took place in the house there should be some evidence located there also. No mention of a trail of blood which would seem to indicate leaving to seek medical help.

Testosterone (plastic boobs or not) versus testosterone "coupled" with tomboy versus the insecurity of a 73 (still vibrant looking) year old man involving money/partnership - business/relationship/marriage/jealousy/possession has TROUBLE written ALL over it with possibly 3 totally unsympatheic "victims" (one no longer with us to enlighten us) does not sound like a lovefest (maybe intially). Way too many possibilties here to even ponder - - - - - - this is Thailand.........

Many of us can consider ourselves fortunate to be "commenting/contributing???" on this forum rather than be caught right in the middle of something (sideways) like this....

Enjoy the full throttle lifestyle - but at you own peril.......for many of us that are not "streetwise" (but pretty much have had our own way in life) from practice but could be caught up in the maelstrom of free thinking Thailand this could/should be worth paying attention to.

    Let the buyer beware.....

  5. There's a house down the road from us (for rent)that has about a 4-5 foot deep hole underneath running along about 6-8 feet of the slab - went and got a flashlight and shined it in and it was about 20 feet under the slab......went and spoke to the neighbor & he said he had a similar problem and two rooms of his house could't be used in the rainy season due to mold infiltration/water pooling under the house....he also indicated the house that I had looked at was always plagued by snakes showing up indoors (imagine they just loved that cool "basement") - glad I didn't stick my head in there for a closer look.....

Walking by one day a LARGE Monitor lizard rumbled across the street I watched it disappear at that house (high walled yard).

Poor build or possibly a pressured water pipe leak could also cause this.....if it's a large area about the only thing to do is open the floor and fill the cavern with cement fixing any leaks and/or running the feed pipes overhead (they tend to be cheap charlies in the piping they use/choose when building) ..... if I were you I'd look for another house....

  6. Simple Dont flick a fag butt in the street and voila no fine

Yes but he tossed it down a storm drain so they have no proof and it is not littering the street which is what the law should be concerned about. So shake down indeed. 2000 Baht is the standard fine for this.

Don't necessarily agree with that logic - the filters stay intact and if done by a great many people could glog the drainage system somewhere down the line - especially with BKK's drainage problems & really no different than tossing it in a canal - just an enclosed one ----- or the river would look like a floating ashtray (it's already bad enough).....it was a thoughtful thoughtless act.....disrespectful (to me) but a lot of smokers are a disrespectful lot/breed......

Pack it in - pack it out......

  7. Let's see - someone is driving a van with 6 passengers in it and someone slaps the driver on the back of the head @ 80-100 KPH?

Given the possible consequences of this act of stupidily - the slapper should have been charged - the driver could argue rightfully that this action could have caused a tragedy and he was fearful for his life/well being as well as the other passengers in the van.....

Driver did well and got a bad deal.....then has to take them to Pattaya???????

  8. What little idea people have about poverty. How can someone call the richest country in the world USA poor? The main reason ex-pats come to Thailand is because Thailand is poor and their country is rich. Therefore, their money is worth more. Simple stuff isnt it?

Nope - totally do not agree - if rich is spending beyond your means - taxed beyond your comprehension & having your dreams short ciruited - that's the US...if you want to believe that your RV makes you better than the man next to you (when he could buy you twice over) you're in the wrong campground......Thailand gives you an honest chance to amend/reclaim yourself (as you wish or forsee your own future).......

Get over yourself (what little of it it is you perceive) expats that have been here awhile cultivating the nuances that come with the Thai lifestyle embrace and re-embrace it.....there's a reason for that......

    Ugly americans need not apply.......

Pretend you are a big deal - then deal yourself out - - this is a nice country - go back if it's not good enough for you.....

  9. I agree - shelling out a disproportionate amount of $$$$$$ for a "condo" smaller than decent sized hotel rooms is a stupid option (unless you want to flaunt Darwin's theory).......

"Buying" here in many ways is a trap (many traps actually depending on approach/circumstance) as are the 30 year leases.........

It's a fools game in which many times we are only too happy to oblige as a trusting farang.....

I like to live far enough from a major city that I can drive in and enjoy what a city has to offer....(I've done that everywhere I've lived) ..... mostly houses here - condos seem located in citified areas - I don't like living in hives....if I wished there are enough rental condos that if I wanted to have a second place for city flings it would be easy - but to buy - noooooo......

I'd be willing to bet that most are """influenced""" into buying decisions by sincerely interest others (their wishes - our $$$$$) - I'm also willing to bet that at least 50% of these work out to our dismay (and their gain)......

  10. Interesting - three friends that just came back from US (citizens) just came back with sticker shock from there on items they shopped for.....

My container - which also had a vehicle in it cost $2600 - Oakland to Laem Chabang - might want to shop around on that.....

I was advised that unless the furniture was very special or well built not to bother - some stuff does not do well in this climate + I like the teak and the pricing is reasonable for quality furniture (hard to find real quality in the US).

Some things like hot tubs, BBQ's, and I guess pool tables are much more costly here. I brought over a new wet smoker & was glad I did - the LPG place had to convert the hose but got it to work - not sure if the fill system is the same here as the US for filling a US tank....if you like to BBQ that might be one item to consider....

  11. "Yes, they do sell the Best Foods brand in large plastic bags and it makes it much cheaper"

I think the big bag at Macro is 67THB - the jar in Rim Ping 109THB (15 oz) - wife says the bag could fill 2 jars.....

Don't know what she uses to make the 1000 Island - tastes good and I eat it.....
