Personally I would be concerned that getting caught offering a bribe would get me in more trouble. However this is Thailand. I recently had the opportunity to see bribery in action during a land purchase. So . . . I guess it happens.
Not correct. Immigration forced the call to his landlord, twice, so that they would have a Thai person to suggest the extortion/bribe to ....you know, because Thai people understand these things. Then she probably explained to him how and what to do, also keeping immigration’s hands cleaner.
They probably want us to spread this all around our networks so that other so-called stupid farangs who are not getting it, will have put the money in the passport already, to start with. So I guess if you are worried about not getting let in, stick $100 bill inside.

I have a friend who I have known since childhood and he has lived here since the 1990s and he has never posted here, and only checked it out a few times when I mentioned it ...so one day he could write a story, people might just want to seek it out for a special event, that makes perfect sense to me??

It’s really more like extortion than bribery, certainly when you have done nothing wrong and deserve to come in. And they suggest it.

No, but pointing out the bartenders (IO’s) sexual orientation is completely irrelevant. When people do that they expose their subconscious bigotry.
Well I agree usually, I think there can be times and people who don’t feel any bias in that area, and don’t do that. But if it is not shameful and secretive anymore it seems we should say it openly and not worry, gay pride and all that? Like why do people still feel angry when they see gay people kiss? They might even be married but you prefer they keep it private? That is my line of thinking here.

Well yes Jack that is true, it would be better to be very specific when speaking about such things, but the awareness that many people are not and to pick up clues when they are not being such, is a good skill to have.

Had a male officer done the same, would your heteronormative attitudes reflected on his orientations?
You breached the regulations and were rejected, not the fault of the officer that you presumed you were "entitled" to be given opportunities which are not allowed.
Why don’t you guys back off ....replace lesbian with black ...the black officer did XYZ. There is nothing offensive in his sentence, it is purely descriptive. If it is not illegal, immoral, offensive, whatever to be gay, just like to be black, then how can using that in a sentence be offensive to you??
The gay bartender served me some drinks.
is that offensive?

Sounds like the lowest common denominator of Thai society and women. Glad I dont run with that crowd. I doubt he is having a hard time. I imagine he enjoys life with a great wife and kids and does not have to worry about the dark side of Thailand..
Who are you talking about? I wrote to Dr.Jack not the OP, I was defending the OP, you seem to be attempting to defend someone but are putting down pretty much every guy who is not married to a virgin?
Many people use the word Thai wife to be polite let’s say, for almost any kind of relationship, nicer for the lady to be referred to that way. People don’t really need to know if you are legally married or not. Many women by the age of 30 have a child before meeting Mr Farang, just like women all over the world, what does that have to do with the dark side?
I meant, to Jack, that if he is so so literal all the time, Thailand will be difficult for him, Thais are not direct, and he is dealing with other expat cultures I assume, not only OZ people.
-
Well okay, I understand. What I meant about the fine, was that is code for suggesting that you pay some money without being so direct. As I understand, using an agent is that one is participating in corruption, just that way it benefits even more people, the business and the part of your money that is used to bribe immigration. So you can try to leave the agent out? But it gives you a buffer zone to make you feel more comfortable, and happy to hear it is less than 25k, the number I have been hearing.

To Dr. Literal, you must be having a hard time here? Even after all these years here you don’t know that the phrase Thai wife, does not always mean legally married? Probably in most cases when you hear it, it does not? And when discussing children it is often stepchildren or the girlfriend’s child from another man to be literal. Understand now?

Hi thank you for your post it was 3 days of hell running around on a motorbike getting documents that they knew did not matter as they were never going to pass on our application. The boss man did say that if went to a Savannakhet and applied for a new category O visa , when we come back and in the last 30 days of the 90 after putting 400k in the bank for 2 months he would pass on our application. So we said OK yes we will do that as I just wanted to get out of there before I lost it big time. My wife was asked by the lady boss what we were doing before we left my wife told her we are off to Savanakhet and she laughed. We had no intention of going there as the visa agent is a better way of fixing the problem.

Scotsman
Well, what I mean by asking for help, is there is a way to get a discussion about a bribe going. The officer is not going to demand it straight out. But it might be cheaper than 25k to an agent. The boss has some discretion and can let this go, the agent forwards money to do that. Can I pay a fine to overlook this problem this time because I am sick and can’t travel?? Blah blah?? Have wife call and ask??
So maybe for 2000 baht, or I don’t know the price, he will let it go? Some Thai people know how to start these discussions, some Westerners do too, try asking your wife or if you have a male friend who is better at those things. I’ve been wondering if many people could make these small problems go away, if immigration wants more corruption, is welcoming it, but we are too stupid to get it??
I think that is why the boss lady followed up, what are you going to do, and then laughed at your answer ...like you are too stupid to offer them some money and do all that work and pay more?? Think about it.

Now today after we went to kasikorn bank we received 2 copy's of the transaction we also updated the Bangkok bank letter and updated passbook on the way.
We arrived at immigration at 11pm it was empty just one couple in front of us, When we sat down with the boss lady she went over all the doc again and I showed her the Kasikorn receipts and also again the transverwise pdf this time she wanted a copy of the transferwise one so I went and got it.
Then she asked me in very bad English about why I am changing from Retirement extension to Marrage one and she pointed to one of my transfers that was for 65k I told her that was a one off transfer to pay a bill in Thailand. I had to explain to her that i got my retirement one because I had a UK pension letter.
Now I can't get that letter and the pound is now down to 37 so I have to change to marrage she was not happy with my answer. She tried to talk Thai with my wife about this but all my wife knows is what I tell her and she told her in Thai I have to change visa because of no UK pension letter and I don't have 65k a month pension now as the baht is 37.
Well now she sorts out all the documents again and tells me in English a lot of something but I just could not understand her so I was a little abrupt and said in Thai I don't understand what you are saying.
So now she collects all the paper work and tells us to follow her into the big boss room where 2 Thai officers were there one is the boss of retirement desk seen him before the other one behind the desk I have not seen before.
She spoke to him and she pointed to a page with a yellow line through it and then she went away outside back to her desk.
The boss man tells me and my wife that I nearly got it right but this time we have to say no as you can see in your Bangkok Statements on the first 6 months ones that I got from my bank. He points out the one they highlighted in yellow the date was the 10.01.2018 and I had transferred 37k he said it should be 40k I never counted that transfer as being part of my extension as it is to old.
Now I and my wife pointed out to him that my last visa was with a pension letter from the UK and on Jan 2019 there was a police order to put 65k or 40k into a Thai bank every month but that there should be a grace period, He ask my wife in Thai were she had seen this and my wife said on the internet but he dismissed her and told me in English that the starting date was from 1st jan 2018 and I did not have 40k on that date I told him I have 12 times 40k from sep 2018 up to this date so you want more? He said you just had to get the first one right on his date 1st of jan 2018 Don't ask me why.
There is nothing we can say or do that will make him wrong and us right so we said we would go outside Thailand and get a new category o visa and start again.
He said if you can get 400k when you come back with the new visa I will give you the one year so we left it at that.
Now after 20 years living here with my wife I have never been refused a extension this will be my first time on the back of a lie from the boss with his interpretation only
Well I am not going to go for a new visa outside Thailand I am going to a agent to get this one renewed I will update later but for now they don't want to do the paperwork for this type of extension.
Regards
Scotsman
Sorry that happened to you. They are just stealing your money. I wonder if they want people to start offering them bribes rather than going to agents for small things like this?? Did you ever consider asking him if there was some way to help you??

An open ticket means you have paid the fare, but have not booked the date, not necessarily that the ticket is one way ...it is two way, but one way requires a date to be booked. I’m not sure you can buy a one way open ticket?
I mean, you have booked the outgoing date ...not the return date which is still open, right?

Part 2 of above story: My flight was the last one of the night and I was one of the last to go through but I had come before and pre-cleared us in case we would have any problems, due to having my dogs downstairs. When I came back and went through security, suddenly immigration pretended I had never done that, and they had never seen me before. Also they held me up considerably 3 months before on a flight home for Xmas so I was super prepared this time.
I showed them every document that exists, over and over, they kept looking at it (the boss lady) as if she wasn’t really seeing anything. She started at some point to say that I had really offended her and was in big trouble now. I did not take that seriously really, as in I was not worried, because I have never made any officials upset in 14 years, and I had said almost nothing, just passed over papers and answered questions. Off to the side is the thing going on with my daughter, them trying to intimidate her several feet away from me and in Thai. The boss kept getting into weird staring contests with me for some reason, I kept thinking well like dogs, first one to look away is weaker so I’m not looking away. Now I realize she was trying to keep me from looking around probably.
I reminded this woman that she knows me, she cleared me to go at Xmas? And other times too, she must remember? I am just ignoring the fact that I was cleared to go through an hour ago because I realize something is going on now, but I am confused what is it?? I see one lady give me some sad eyes and look down. I am surrounded by what seems to be every person who works behind in the office, walking around me and my luggage, 4 or 5 people. They ask me for ridiculous things, like they want my certified English translations I have used for her immigration in the US embassy. That I am not going to give them. I say, for what ...you are the Thai government and you can read Thai and I have the original Thai documents?? So this is going on for maybe one hour!! They tell me it is the LAW and I should know that and have brought them English copies!! The airline workers come to see what is going on, everyone is on the flight except us, my dogs are on the plane, and I see boss lady give a nod, like yeah just give me a minute more ...they will be coming.
Suddenly, we are free to go, rush onto the plane, an hour later I want to buy something and guess what?? My wallet that was on the top of my bag is now gone!! My daughter tells me oh, well I saw that older man in uniform bend down and get in your bag, he sort of looked like he was fixing something
on his shoe I was not sure?? WHAT? Why didn’t you tell me?
She starts freaking out ..well I thought they were going to keep me and they were telling me that you were saying bad things and they were going to put you in jail ....she did tell me a few times to stop talking and that I was going to go to jail and I didn’t know why she said that!! She tried to pull me away when I was answering questions.
I was in no way close to losing my temper, never raised my voice, I was not even feeling worried about it really because I knew I had every single legal paper that exists in Thailand and I could not imagine not passing the interview. I had gotten extra legal papers just in case for padding. I knew the flight could not leave with my dogs and luggage on it and not us ...so I was curious what the hell was going on but I was not freaking out.
Afterwards I discovered a few other things missing. I used my wallet just before to buy water for the dogs, I used it there to show them things, which they quickly said they don’t need ...like her Thai ID, my Thai ID, anything in my wallet they don’t need, they do need things buried in my suitcase that I was not expecting, they do need me to make copies of every paper with their phone so I am distracted, they are messing up my papers and I am afraid of losing some of them while they put them all over their booth.
I was thinking later of all the people who when moving might have a lot of extra cash they are trying to get out of the country? You usually will have all your valuables with you, any nice watches, jewelry ...I had my safe deposit box keys in my wallet. Luckily I had been going to the US a lot lately and had been bringing back all my valuables in each trip or never brought them in the first place. I still did have some but I reduced it quite a bit.
I think if they can tell you are moving back, you might be a target for strange things to happen, you could be a walking gold mine, so watch out.

They don't check or question my son visa status as he is Thai, my visa status yes but not my son, the airline check in staff want to see the other nationality passport that way you don't have to get a tourist visa for your son on his Thai passport.
Don’t tell me NONSENSE!!! Are you traveling with BOTH parents by chance?? That might be the main difference you are not catching here. Also, what happened for YEARS is not relevant anymore, I also traveled for years too with my daughter with barely a care in the world, and then a gradual crackdown, leading too, she will never come again until she is a legal adult, immigration scared her so badly thinking they would not let her leave Thailand last time!! They specifically told her they had the power to keep her and were thinking of doing that, and had her almost in tears and wai’ing the big boss. They purposely took her aside to mentally abuse her luckily she doesn’t crack easily didn’t give them the satisfaction of crying. But she was terrified. We were moving out of Thailand, she had a PR stamp for the US in her passport, and they were telling her/me she couldn’t leave. House is sold, dogs are waiting on airplane.
Oh, Nonsense ..it never happen to Nightfox so never happened ...when is the last time you got raped Nightfox?? You deny all rape stories too??

Immigration has been asking for every document known to man when leaving with a child, and for both parents, and then even this is not enough, when you have every document that exists in Thailand. Why? Unexplainable sort of like the strange stories of people with valid visas that get kicked back for no reason. So I would be careful and be worried that once here with your daughter, she may never leave again, especially if you are not on good terms with her Mother and the Mother cannot go to the airport with you.

Well my point was simply that obviously a Retirement visa is the normal way to go, if you have some reason that you know that won’t work for her, such as financially she cannot qualify, then might as well state that so people can help you with the real issue.

And Gee, this 69 year old woman might be getting married after all?? You forgot that this exists, not only for you old men in Thailand??? But I am being a bully to suggest it??
