As little more info.   About an hour ago I remembered to go into the SIM settings again to hopefully see what is the telecommunication company name of the SIM card.   So, went into that area and it's a SingTel SIM and it was connected to AIS although it was also showing a bunch of True, DTAC, etc., towers which I may have been able to switch the connection to by manually selecting the cell service you wanted to hook to.  But I left it alone as in being connected to AIS as AIS has wide coverage across Thailand and SingTel (a Singapore company) owns 23% of AIS.

Thanks @Pib. I find that EV are always online intriguing, but also alarming. Of course our phones also collect data, but with the cars we have hardware, software, firmware and all data access rules made in China 🇨🇳

I assume the car don't have options as to what data are shared similar to what most phone apps have?

Is there any options to see what or even just how much data the car uploads?

Apparently the car manufacturer can remotely disable the car. It could be a handy feature for the repo-guy, but so far no reports of it happening in Thailand.....yet.

Compare the price of Chinese electric cars at the time of launch VS now, how much is it reduced to in 2024? Is it more economical to buy first or buy later?

Very nice article. If you ever come across a similar discount tracking list for ICEV, please share.

So far we seen 150,000 baht off the Ciaz and 800,000 baht on the Mercedes E300, but I am sure there are more out there

Take a look at this 4 Apr 2024 Sky News article on the same subject....it gives a lot of detail...nothing as dramatic as a bubble bursting.

    https://news.sky.com/story/electric-car-uk-market-share-shrinks-figures-suggest-13107632

Above Sky News article gives a ton more detail than the below clickbait Times news article that is only around six sentences long....the Times article leaves out a lot of details about the overall economic and vehicle sales situation in the UK.

    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/sluggish-ev-market-holds-back-recovery-in-new-vehicle-sales-8fpzzxwv8

All valid points, but with a million EV cars on the road, some EV buyers are probably also being lured away from the showrooms and into the second hand EV market.

This is something we haven't seen in Thailand yet, but if and when the BYD fabric start pumping out 150,000 units, we might get a thriving second hand market around 2025/26 and that could put a damper on new EV sales.

"There are now over a million electric cars on our roads.....

Yea...any OTA that could be hundreds of megabytes in size do not count against the monthly BYD data allotment.

Is it possible you add the sim number in the My AIS app to monitor the data usage, up- and downloads?

The reason I ask, it that there is some debate in Europe that China is collecting and commercializing data from EVs.

This could just be driver behavior, that is then sold to insurance companies, but it could also be both voice and video recordings in and around the car.

BYD vehicle example:  it connects to the internet via mobile/SIM and/or Wifi....just like your smartphone.  It's always connected whether using SIM card or Wifi.....always connected where you have started/driving the car or not because when you turn off the EV it's really just going into standby mode where certain communications is still available.

And this type of connectivity is not really unique to EV....heck, ICEV can have the same capability.

    @Pib, @Gweiloman

Do you then have to have a separate mobile package for the car's sim card and can you freely choose the service provider?

What is the monthly data usage?

Will the car work if you decide to remove the sim card and go "dark"?

  7. Technical question to our EV owners. How and how much are these new EVs connected to the Internet?

Do they have a sim card and always connected like a mobile phone or is it wifi only?

If using the home wifi, is it then always connected when within range or just connecting or just when charging or just when an software update requires connectivity?

What is important is the ratio of new EV's to new ICE.  I didn't consider a slump in the entire auto industry.  If the ratio starts to decrease over 3 months consecutively, then I will indeed concede EV's have a problem.

You have a new lease on life, based on your new EV market share metrics.

I have made a little chart, just for you. It was a close call in February and starting May the first ray of summer sun ☀️ might start to shine.

More cherry pickin' BS ... as my car won't even accept 100kW.  Some, most would consider that as being a bit deceptive ...  :coffee1:

Keep repeating your BS, but few are dumb enough to believe it.

Try filtering 50kWh & up, and don't use the online site, use the app, as more up to date.  Better yet, use Charge Loma, even more up to date, though not completely, and you can simply filter the most popular 'fast plug'

    As I've already posted:

That is a mind-boggling high density of charging station, presumably all build in the last 2 years.

Does the app show the total number of public charging stations, all sizes and speed included?

    Much appreciated.

I agree that the Feb and March figures are disappointing, but do you really think we will see less than 3,822 EVs sold in April? If we do then I will admit that EVs have a problem.

If EV sales in April 2024 exceed 3,822 will you admit your projection was wrong? We will have to wait and see

I am also cheering for higher April sales, as our esteemed Chiang Rai member claims we won't see 3 consecutive months of declining EV sales in his lifetime.

I think we have to see all of 2024 sales before we can draw any conclusions, maybe even 2025 sales numbers. There are a lot of unknowns, price cutting, newer and smaller models, shifting political will, economic slowdown, Chinese factories opening up, or possibly delaying opening up. For now it is just a bit up and down, but nevertheless fun to follow.

I don't think an MG will have the front to park next to a BMW, it makes them feel inferior....😂

I will help him cut a few Coke Zero cans and stick them on as exhaust pipes, so the MG doesn't feel so naked next to the Bimmer.

He thinks Stellantis sales in Thailand increased 65%

    😂

Let's keep the name calling for the kindergarten and focus on the EV sales numbers y-o-y:

    January: +352.5%

    February: -33.9%

    March: -19.5%

The honeymoon period is over for EVs.
