  1. I can understand the logic of prohibiting alcohol and cigarettes on television adverts, racing cars etc, but going to the extreme of prosecuting for displaying on restaurant menus is IMO ridiculous.

It isn't called ridiculous, it's called hypocrisy.

    It's also called pathetic.

I started a thread not so long ago about the over the top heavy handed tactics applied at a a bar in a small seaside resort.

What a totally pathetic country this has become and still more sites being blocked on a daily basis.Welcome to little China. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/814754-how-to-promote-tourism-in-thailandnot/?PageSpeed=noscript

  2. Crazy Brit. You don't visit a foreign country, rent a car, and drive with reckless abandon. You don't know the roads and you are a guest.

I hope they lock up Mr. Benjamin in a Thai prison cell for a few years and not just let him go back to the island after paying off the officer's family.

My condolences to Police Lance Corporal Wiroon's family and friends. Terrible that this happens at the end of the Songkran holiday.

Who said the car was rented?

What makes him a tourist? Maybe just his visa?

The police officer's motorbike had no license plate at all

Yet, you condemn the guy to a prison sentence. What if it's found out that the car driver had not a trace of alcohol or other substance and that it was an accident at 2:40am.

Then again, i'm sure you'll find some other answers.

    Totally agree.

So far he has been accused of being drunk and many other things.

I'm sure half the idiots who post on here have never driven on Thai roads or even live here.

Those U-Turns on major highways are just a recipe for accidents to happen

  3. An advice to the Thais commenting on Facebook.

You should be more concerned and examine your culture and habits before being so upset about 2 naked people.

Look into the domestic violence, rape of minors, abandonment of children and families and other wrongdoings, happening daily in your country and then start worrying about this.

    Hypocrisy, comes to my mind.

Do you think just because they comment on the wrong of this that they don't care about the things you mentioned?

Rather hypocritical a foreigner coming to live in Thailand, probably with no aspiration to get citizenship or even permanent residency, and tell the Thais what and what not to do.

Even if you did get citizenship or permanent residency.

Do you really think as a foreigner you could tell Thai's what to do as Thais can when they take on another nationality.

    I very much doubt it.

Are you allowed to vote and own land if you are resident or citizen?Just wondering

  4. RT @191Thailand: Mobile phone footage shows shoppers running in panic after an explosion in a shopping mall car park on Koh Samui http://www.reuters.com/video/2015/04/11/blast-sparks-panic-at-thai-mall?videoId=363812968&videoChannel=1

You have to wonder why/how the general public are allowed to freely walk about and photo a potential crime scene. Amazing Thailand.

Does not matter here as they probably have no forensic people competent enough to carry out a thorough examination of the scene anyway.

  5. Last night I was sitting have a meal and a beer in my favourite place in a sleepy little beach resort outside Chumphon.

There was about 20 people in the place when in marches 5 junta/government lakkies.7 army and about 10 police outside.

The junta /government jobs worth's were lecturing the 2 owners while the army and some other hangers on were going around flashing photo's of every one.

This rattled a few of the tourist who drank up and left plus 4 people who were going to come in turned around and walked off.

The bars on this beach have had a pretty bad season already tourist wise and they could do without this type of intimidation.

And what was it all about?

They had one Chang menu holder behind the bar.You can not promote alcohol in this pathetic country anymore you see

(I wonder what all the large alcohol promoted events are going to do?)

and as a consenting adult if you out having a meal and its one minute past 2 in the afternoon you can not get a drink.

You would think with all the murders and drug related crime here the 20 or so people going around frightening tourist could find better things to do.

    Overkill is an understatement.

As I said what Totally Pathetic Country this is becoming. While the rest of Asia is storming ahead this draconian ruled place is regressing very fast

  6. And for the first 13 days of March, tourist arrivals shot up to 11 million people representing 27.6 percent jump, said Mr Krisda Jinavijarana, head of the Fiscal Economics Office.

Eleven million people arrived in just thirteen days, if we are to believe him, no wonder that beach was crowded !

Is there anyone left back home in China ? laugh.png

Or is there simply a worrying shortage of locally-manufactured decimal-points, for officials' use, in public-announcements ? whistling.gif

He must have worked for the T.A.T at some time spouting stupid numbers like that/

  7. I hope Prayuth uses his powers to tackle the root problems and makes sure that the Thai Department of Civil Aviation is staffed by competent people. What we don't want is a whitewash and the blaming of "unfriendly" reports.

I also suggest Prayuth looks into the maintenance of military aircraft - their planes and helicopters seem to fall out of the sky with alarming frequency.

The problem is .Where in Thailand to find a competent person as sadly I have had to employ Thai's for years and I am still searching for one with an ounce of competence.

  8. Looks like the Prayut government isn't doing a whole lot to stamp out police corruption. Tea money collection is alive and well.

The Prayut (dictatorship) sorry pretend government is doing absolutely ---- all except pass stupid laws like you are an adult yet you can not have a glass of wine or a beer with a meal in a restaurant if its one min past 2 til five .What a pathetic country this has become.Do as I say not as I do.

  9. one more to the countless topics about the same same...

What does that mean..if there's a earlier discussion of this topic please let me know!

Thanks for your view Costas2008. Actually it's not a question of just a few thousand baht here and there. Some months ago I was getting 20 000 baht more than now so it is quite a significant difference.

About 7 years ago, if I remember well, I was getting 68Baht to a Pound.

    Now I'm getting 49Baht.

    A difference of 38,000Baht a month.

Has it affected my life style? No

Has it affected your life style? Don't think so.

But it's good to have a moan, especially for something we haven't got any control over it.

How can a drop of 38 k a month not affect your lifestyle?

  10. You're asking for comparisons from people with experience in both places. I haven't been to Kunming, but can offer some thoughts about Phuket while you're waiting for someone with that experience.

You are comparing a city in China with more than 6 million residents, to the Island province of Phuket which has only a fraction of the population. (I'm presuming you're not specifically talking about the small capital, Phuket City)

And I'm guessing you're asking about lifestyles in the two places and not teaching conditions.

The people posting on this forum generally live on Phuket and, with one or two notable exceptions, do so willingly and like the place. Most of the detractors have never lived in the Province and their venom against the place probably stems from their own shortcomings.

Of course there are some problems here with transport issues, criminal corruption and some opportunistic crime. Expats know how to avoid most of these problems.

And, in keeping with it's high profile tourist destination status, it is also one of the more expensive places in Thailand, particularly if you don't know how to shop and eat like a local. Accommodation can be expensive, particularly for someone on 50,000pm, but does depend on where in the Province you live.

Personally, I would rather pluck out my eyeballs then live in a large Chinese city, but only you can decide what best suits you and your current lifestyle.

    Good luck.

Aren't there 6 million Chinese in Phuket?

Probably only 4 million but some people( usually with vested interests) still portray it as a beautiful paradise island.

They must not have left their houses for the last few years me thinks

  11. Now if you fancy a decent meal instead of boring pizza.

Go and try an Indian curry on Thung Wua Laen beach Chumphon.

There is a place there called the Curry Shack right on the beach.

It's owned by a British chef who has worked in Indian restaurants.Got to say it's the best Indian food I have had in Thailand.

They do western and Thai food also.

Well worth a visit if you ever that way

  12. I think many Thais just don't know any better as they grow up throwing trash anywhere they want. Most Thai people have very clean floors in their homes but many sweep all the dirt right out the door and don't really care where it goes. We had some new Thais move into our building recently and had to be told not to sweep their dirt out into the hallway and to not let trash sit in the hall way. Condos in this building are not cheap and is about 50/50 farang Thai. They thought it was ok to do, they didn't know better !

I once hired a few local kids to pick up trash around the place I lived up country. I gave them 20 baht to fill a garbage bag. After about an hour and a few bags full I think they started to understand that throwing trash around was not correct.

The only reason they have clean floors is because thats where they spend most of their time either eating or sleeping.

Try putting up a few photos of the one they worship

  13. ...although due to their unofficial nature these reports remain unverifiable.

Like most of the TV fear-mongering messages.

    bat.jpg

They may want to justify themselves by catching a Farang with a big bag of Gear rather than give up the tea money

Or generate more clicks on TV and stir-up the "tea money" soap opera drama queens.

Maybe the police have some sort of special radar that can pick out the gormless twits.

You would be picked out every time you walked down there then
