  1. After looking on seven seas website for a quote I see the price changes quite a bit from the door to door service @ 320 pounds to the door to depot @ 180 pounds

If I go for the door to depot service does that mean I will need to clear my boxes through Customs myself? If so can anyone please advise me what’s involved and am I able to do this myself?

You are shipping the items listed below from Newcastle Upon Tyne (Tyne and Wear) to Pattaya (Changwat Chon Buri) using our Door to Door by Sea service. This has an estimated transit time of around 8 weeks.

    Qty Desc Price VAT Total

    2 Minimum Charge £120.00 £0.00 £120.00

    5 Tea Chest £175.00 £0.00 £175.00

    1 Delivery Charge £25.00 £0.00 £25.00

  2. Thanks for all the replies. A few questions please

    John45, you wrote,

Box sizes are same as old tea chest (each one 5 cubic feet) ..about seven boxes per M3..cost £25/box Seems a good price to me.
Was that for the actual shipping cost or just the boxes?

    s.pylos, you wrote,

I used Seven Seas, they deliver flat boxes and tape to your home and come back later to collect them.

Arrived in BKK 2 months later, the local agent took care of everything (I had only 7 boxes).

What was the cost for shipping your 7 boxes?

    Cheers,

  3. I’m buying a house and intend having a 30 year lease with property in my Thai girlfriend’s name.

My question is, does the land office write up the lease agreement between my g/f and myself or do I need a lawyer to write the lease contract.

I know it seems obvious to use a lawyer but a year or two ago, a mate of mine just went to the land office with his wife and the L/O sorted out the lease details between them without using a lawyer. He reckons the L/O take care of the farang. Is this true or is he being naive?

So should I use a lawyer? If so can anyone recommend a fair lawyer who’s not going to rob me! Lol I had one quote for 12,000 baht. But I know it’s just a standard form letter type contract which they just change the names & address and then print it out.

    Thanks

  4. On Tuesday after opening a sterling account I had to decide if I should wait two days to get my sterling bank account number to transfer into that account giving me control as to when to change it into baht, or just transfer my cash for my new house into my Baht account.

I reckoned the good exchange rate wouldn’t last much longer so I decided to transfer my cash into my Baht account. So on Tuesday I emailed the swift form to my daughter in the UK, she posted it to good old Nationwide who fortunately for me, received it on Wednesday.

On Thursday early evening I swiped my account book through the machine and my Baht was all in. I checked the rate and it works out I had 70.52 Baht to the pound. I guess my gamble paid off!

It took Nationwide just two days to process the swift transfer. Had they taken an extra day it would have lost me almost 2000 pounds.

It would be interesting to know how long have other people waited for their banks in the UK to process swift transfers?

Is two days standard or are Nationwide bl**dy quick?

  5. I have a Nationwide e savings and a flex account in the UK. I’m buying a house here and need to transfer money to my account here very soon.

I have a Thai Baht account but understand that a Sterling account is better as I can decide when to transfer to Baht when it’s already here. So I went to BKK bank today to open a Sterling account but was told it’s going to be two days before they can issue my account number.

My dilemma is, should I transfer my money to my Thai Baht account NOW or wait two days (that’s if it really is two days) until I get my Sterling account number, then transfer into my Sterling account so I have control over when to transfer???

The exchange rate seems pretty good just now but how will it be next week if I wait for my Sterling account to open??

    Topfield? anyone???

    Cheers

    Phil

  6. Thanks for the replies guys.

Funds will then be changed automatically into Baht at the receiving bank

( Cos your account is a Baht account)

I understood that by transferring into a sterling account I can then choose when to either transfer to sterling or withdraw funds here when the exchange rate is higher. If the money is transferred to Baht when it gets here, that means I don’t have any control of the rate at that time, yes/no??
As someone else said SWIFT is best for larger transfers as there is a fixed

cost of about 30 pounds regardless of how much you transfer.

The money is to buy a house. Incidentally Nationwide's fee is £20

One thing, I have a Thai Baht account already, if I open a sterling account, are these current accounts or savings accounts??

    cheers

  7. I want to ship some personal items from the UK to Pattaya. The items only amount to the area equivalent to about two washing machines. Am I able to ship these items while I only have a non Imm O visa? I read somewhere that to do this one needs a work permit, is this true?

Also does anyone know of any shipping companies who can ship small loads like mine?

I’ve searched and searched the forum but can’t find the answer.

    Thanks

    Phil

  8. I am about to make a swift transfer from my Nationwide account in the UK and am confused so have a couple of questions.

Please can anyone tell me if it’s best to transfer the money into a Thai Baht account, or should I have a pounds sterling account?

Also can I transfer the funds from my e savings account or do I have to transfer it to my flex account?

    Cheers

    Phil

  9. I have two questions if anyone can advise It would be appreciated.

I’ve been considering taking the plunge and buying a house. However I have read so many conflicting things about whether or not a company is still possible to have in order to buy a house?

The other option I was considering is a 30 year lease. But, from what I understand IF I split up with my g/f in the future then I believe that I could/would be liable to pay her the rent figure specified in the lease documents. I mean the figure that you pay the land office the 1% on. Is this correct?

    Thanks

    Phil

  10. Absolutely, it's the Thai people and Thai culture's effect on me. If they moved all the folks in California over to Thailand and all the Thai people to California, I'd be happy to go live in California! Over the years, Thailand has made me a gentler, more honest, less fearful and happier person. Thank you, Thailand!

Interesting response, it seems your head's well in the sand!

  11. I’ve just got back from the bar so excuse me if this is posted in the wrong section. This is a great forum and has helped me a lot. However it seems that many of the posts on the forum are all about the ifs and buts and all of the problems associated with living in los, of which there are many, Which makes me wonder why, with all these problems and uncertainties of living here do people choose to do so? What is the big attraction that keeps people here? What's in it for you?

I won’t bother elaborating as those who have been here for any length of time know exactly what I mean.

  12. Sometimes the applicant is in an invidious position. The embassy knows full well that in Thailand (and other countries, too) people are paid in cash and may neither pay their salary in to a bank, nor even have a bank account, but still chooses to impose a British "standard", and insist that the lack of wage slips and a bank account cast doubt upon the claimed employment.

    Scouse.

So what's the solution to this problem then Scouse? how can maikhaojai get around this?

  13. Below is part of my previous post that was deleted. This part wasn’t slagging anyone off so I’m posting it again. Hopefully this post is acceptable Scouser?

“The visa rules are too stringent and prevent many genuine couples from being together.

When genuine couples face problems unjustly, it’s often best to go straight to their MP. I did and got a result when my g/f reapplied 3 months later. I reckon many times they just refuse the first application to be difficult and to get more money from the application fees for the greedy UK government!”
