85,000 bht per month? In another post here, various local "experts" said the maximum someone could earn teaching English in LOS would be 40,000 per mo. How does your friend come by such a high salary?

I speak, read, etc. English very fluently - better than 95% of Thais speak Thai. I speak Mexican Spanish. I don't speak ten words of Thai after taking lousy lessons in it. It's nearly impossible to learn. A working knowledge of Thai takes six months full-time to master, if you have good teachers. Forget becoming bilingual in Thai.

I have used Sripat since March 2003, extensively. The doctors all speak English. I don't speak 10 words of Thai. Once I waited an hour to see my professor specialist. My usual wait is 10 to 20 minutes. I often waited over 30 minutes to pay $90 in Houston. Drugs are cheap.

German was a big contributor to English. Spanish gave us canyon, chocolate, coyote, chili, among others. And try teaching Thais to say whilst, amongst, or betwixt. Britishisms are quaint, like cucumber sandwiches.

Generally, Thais don't pay proofreaders well. I earned 300 baht an hour doing it. They think they lose face being corrected, so they lose face saying it wrong.

IMHO as a long-time tee-totaler: Drinking is insane. One beer to be sociable is enough. Drunks are insane; there's no reasoning with them. Thailand permits it for Thais and farang. The Thais don't enforce drink laws.

The bona fide presence test has no definite requirement of days in the USA.

When I researched the USA personal savings rate on the net, it's obvious that lots of factors were ignored. I raised six kids, had a non=working spouse, went through a divorce, lost my home...and retired at 56 from a federal job. Your mileage will differ.
