  1. Leaving aside the whole issue of what's a person with a million baht in net-worth doing living in Thailand (or any foreign country) to begin with, I'm sure there are many in similar situations. We see it in Pattaya as well. However, they are certainly not going to have much of a warm welcome back in Blighty if they plan to return there. The economy pretty much sucks in most of Europe (ex-Germany and the Scandinavian countries), with 25-40 percent cuts in public sector employment rolls and reductions in "benefits" to boot.

Sounds like to me that many folks didn't do their planning too well or partied too hardy during their abbreviated stays in the LOS. Maybe best to head on over to Rooland as I read that blokes fresh out of high-school can make AU$ 100k per year working in the mining industry. [Tip to get there: Go to Philippines for 6 mos. and find a Filipina nursing graduate to marry and then apply for skilled migration visa to Aus. and piggy-back in as her husband.]

The Pinay nurse route won't work as they cannot get registration without doing a conversion course (hence most go to Oz via UK hospitals). Best bet if you want to avoid Blighty is a Pinoy Welder....we need these guys.....and having seen some girls from Manchester in sub zero temperatures a few years ago I can understand that why people explore other sides of their sexuality in order to escape them for Oz :)

I do take your point that you should not be here without the dollars...but a 40% drop would ruin a lot of peoples plans.......

Whats a "Pinoy Welder"if you dont mind me asking?

    You're welcome.

Thanks for that, but didn't need to look at the Welder link.

  2. After being given three years to live by a Thai Doctor (my big mistake for asking him)the shock of the news sent me into some kind of emotional free fall!

I then suffered for five or six months with Depression,Sleepless nights (every night),Anger,an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness,no interest in anything, wrapped up in my own misery, drinking way too much, sleeping pills, tranquilisers.

Somehow or other (dont ask me how),I came through this phase and started thinking positive,I knew I had to pull myself together, and with the help of family and friends, thats what happened.

The main thing I kept drilling into myself, was that the Doctor had made a mistake (as they often do)call it denial on my part?..well maybe or maybe not.

So two years later Im not dwelling on it,..just determined to prove him wrong!and thats what I am doing,in order to cope.

My very best thoughts and wishes to gburns, and as Neverdie has said maintain a "Positive Attitude"

Forgot to mention a good friend of mine was diagnosed with Leukemia, and he was put on daily lifelong medication, and didnt give himself too much of a future either, and now 12 years later, thankfully he's still with us!

  3. Might be worth a try, to look up "Crucial Ram" on the Internet,

They only deal in Ram,and have a superb easy to use Website.

Follow the on screen instructions, they interrogate your system and tell you what Ram you need for the perfect match,no need to open the box at this stage.

Seems they have ram for every brand of computer, imaginable.

order on line with your plastic, great service.

  5. Without knowing the full facts its difficult to argue the rights and wrongs of this incident.

If the former owners of the Contract are refusing to give up their concession? then its yet more bad news for the Thai Tourist Industry.

On the other hand if the new owners of the Contract, are making sure that they are taking over the Contract(with the legalities in place) and no if or buts, then that puts a different light on the matter.

The news that the disputed Car Park is now open again, would possibly indicate the latter, albeit with the 40 armed men in Black, still present.

Either way,its a strange intensive way to do business.

do you have a better idea

Think about the damage this may do to Thailands Tourist Industry first and formost, and do your business in Private, without the Theatricals.

  7. So what was this woman from chang Rai expecting, from this Terrorist/lawless Mob?

    Integrity,loyalty,Fairness,Democracy,Altruism?

IMO Support given to the Redshirts was a drasticly misjudged political choice on her part, which requires no sympathy for the abuse of her donation.

One could also argue that without her money, and Alledgedly Thaksins money, and others, donating to a Daily Riot Bonus, inclusive of Food, and expenses, this Tragic Episode would probably, never have happened in the first place.

Perhaps now she has learnt one of lifes hard lessons,"Beware of the Enemy within"

    Som Nam Naa!

  8. Everything was same, same model, same color..........., no differences in purchase.

1.Was yours a special Promotion Price? NO

2.Was there a PX car deal by either of you? NO

3.Did you both Pay Cash,or was there Finance involved? BOTH CASH

4.Did you both buy at the same time or weeks apart? SAME TIME

Try it and you will see it is worth to invest a little bit of time.

Sometimes the better deal is really near. Like my car i bought in Khog Kloi.

    Did Thaiman say:well done Farang?

  9. Highly unlikely! and would it not be difficult to prove?

Easy to prove. You only have to beat the laziness and you will buy the things cheaper than the average Somchai.

Next example: Last year i bought the same car as my thai friend, same time, but i bought it 5% cheaper than him. Why? Because i was not lazy to compare and so bought the car not on Phuket.

So for what should i complaint about it if they overcharge me 3 times a year buying ice. Lose on one side 50 Bath and gain on the another side sure each year more than 80.000 Bath.

Whilst I agree it is possible to buy a car cheaper in some parts of Thailand, which is not quite like for like! to start with!

A further clarification of the variables of purchase is also necessary:

1.Was yours a special Promotion Price?

2.Was there a PX car deal by either of you?

3.Did you both Pay Cash,or was there Finance involved?

4.Did you both buy at the same time or weeks apart?

  10. This is a crazy poll.

There is a big difference between a scam and an overcharge. You are being asked to answer 2 questions with a one choice answer.I went to buy a bag of ice. I was told that it was 12 baht. I said that it is normally 6 baht. I was told that as a foreigner I could afford 12! Left the shop and bought one next door for 6 baht.

    Overcharge

Take a taxi from Samui airport to my house. 10 minutes maybe 5 kilometers. Told that it is 600 baht. Person next me asks for the same - 600 baht. Thai person asks for the same - 600 baht. No choice - totally illegal (meter taxis).

To me this is a scam.

Catch a tuk-tuk in Bangkok to go to Chatuchak market. Get taken to a jeweler and a tailor first.

That is a scam (possibly - a waste of time at worse.)

As someone earlier said - anyone who comes to Thailand and says that they have NOT been scammed OR overcharged is on medication.

But this is probably true of most other countries with tourists.

(Except for Andorra. I went there as well and I wasn't scammed or overcharged. Mind you, I was only going through on my way to somewhere else. Just wanted to show the wife some snow!)

Possibly a moot point,"Do You Get Scammed and Overcharged" Perhaps it should have been and/or.

But should not have any bearing on the end result, for the Pedantic Voter?

  11. If you've been properly scammed, you won't know it (by definition). If you've been overcharged, it is quite likely that you either won't know it or you were prepared to pay the inflated price, in which case is it overcharging?

Like probably everyone on this site, I have without doubt been overcharged and scammed, but I've had the same in may parts of the UK, Europe, Africa, the USA, Australia and other parts of S E Asia. Probably about the only place I definitely haven't been had over is Andorra, and that's only because I was a guest and spent nothing at all.

May I ask: what is the point of this poll?

    Of course.

Just curiosity, comparing Thailand with other Countries.

But no Poll can be 100% correct of course, and not to be taken too seriously either.

  12. I was referring to Ex Pats,in general.

If you have never been ripped off? then you have had extremely good fortune.

Sure I have been ripped off, just like most people in life get ripped off on occasion, in all countries all over the world.

IMO it is not worse here than anywhere else, as I have stated in numerous discussions on this subject.

I just don't like it when other people simply presume everybody thinks the same as they do, and talk about 'us', 'we', when all they mean is their small group of reference.

Having previously been to 32 Countries,I would have to disagree with your statement, highlighted above! IMO it is worse here in Thailand, compared to the other countries,I have been to.

The TV members, we,us,will no doubt decide to agree or disagree.

  13. Having like most of us been ripped off more times than I have had hot dinners.

    Who is 'us' please?

  14. Having like most of us been ripped off more times than I have had hot dinners.

I agee with the OP there is a point of principal here, which is not about walking away and vowing never to shop there again. They dont know this, they only see the extra they have made on the Table today, which is as far as they care to see ahead, with no thought of losing a customer tomorrow.

Also by not saying anything about the overcharge, you are indirectly setting up the next Farang customer for their share of the overcharging.

You owe it to the next customer to complain, because when you walked away the scam will be perpetuated, and is already known to be easy money.
