  1. "Minimalists" on the TV thread, I am sure are not happy being miserable!

You misjudge minimalists, they are not miserable or mean, what makes them happy and contented is clearing all the clutter and useless possessions from their lives. Which as they do not have to spend time servicing the unwanted,is an added bonus!

Simply put: one person, finds being surrounded by useless objects, enjoyable, while the other person finds it repulsive! True Buddhists are natural Minimalists!

I need to preface that I, as most, live in a conditioned state.

I see the term "minimalist" as simply a label.

You can label many in such ways.

For example: A medical professional understands the need to provide a disinfected environment.

We could label him a "hygienist".

Is this due to an attachment to cleanliness, or is he interested in the survival of his patient.

If one says: Oh, he is a minimalist, doesn't this short change such a persons true aims?

    Rocky,

It's not just a label. It's a word with specific meanings like any other word. We have minimalist art, minimalist music and minimalist lifestyles.

I would describe the lifestyle of a Buddhist monk as extremely minimalist. I think there's quite a lot of evidence based on scientific (psychological) research that suggests that people who give greater priority to 'experiences' (of whatever type) than accumulation of material possessions, are generally happier.

I'm sure Notmyself (when he's himself) would agree with that. wink.png

I have to agree with you Vincent,it's not just a label it's the true meaning and life style behind the label!

  3. "This will include

the Department making the necessary changes to the NHS Charging Regulations so

that those who have paid the surcharge will be able to access NHS care in the same

way as a person who is ordinarily resident".

I would think that those bringing in their Spouses on a settlement Visa, will be upset to have to pay yet another charge,

but personally If I had to start again,I would consider it a privilege to only have to pay £200 for health care for my wife,at Visa times!

Just take a look at the crippling cost of Private Health care, assuming you could purchase Private Health Care, under these conditions?

Sign up for this deal before they change their mind! and realise it's probably another loser for the NHS.

  4. Agreed.

Conversation will fall off and her English will suffer.

It's not an issue but *who's she Lining with ?*

Or is she one of these New Zealand-educated bank executives we're getting fewer and fewer boasts about on TV, busy keeping in touch with other international grad-school alumni of her Uni ?

(BTWThis is a quip about the "so, mine-is-so-hi-so, she makes everyone else's look "so-so" syndrome and NOT a poke at anyone's chosen paramour ;-)

    "Sometimes, 'fuggedabowdit' just means fuggedabowdit."

"Conversation will fall off and her English will suffer."

    Actually her English should improve.

  5. A Greek tragedy is being played out....

It will be a Greek tragedy,if we have to bail out Greece yet again, they want a new deal to keep them in. Let's give them a decent send off, sorry Costa's, the EU can't afford passengers that don't pay their way,and never did!

In the end you are really just bailing out Deutsche Bank which loaned Greece a whole lot of money so that a few people in Greece could buy German cars. And the Deutsche Bank somehow imagined that Greece would pay back those loans by selling olive oil because let's face it, Greece doesn't actually produce much else for sale. The tragedy was that the EU decided that despite centuries of data to the contrary, the cure would be austerity, placing the burden of the banker's folly upon the ordinary Greek citizen who they then demonize as being lazy, etc. T'is a shame that the German bankers were too lazy to do their own due diligence.

If you are willing to invest a few hours I recommend watching a few online videos of economist Mark Blyth, or read his book "Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea". Although I warn you, Blyth suggests that the tragedy of the Euro will become a global tragedy.

The Euro crash has been a accident waiting to happen for at least 2 decades! at least the UK never signed up for monetary union.but that's another story!

At this moment in time, the majority of the UK Electorate would love to be in the position of Greece, with a possible exit of the UK from the EU. 8 weeks from now i'm sure UKIP will not win the Election but will emerge in a position of true power! and able to bargain with the Conservatives or Labour!

I'm a Brit. If anyone sees Costas tell him he owes me a tenner. Cheers.

I'm a Brit so he owes me too biggrin.png

  8. Astonishing! Sen Bernie Sanders in USA wants the US Federal reserve to bail out Greecegiggle.gif

even more astonishing is Greece saying they will ask Russia or China for financial assistance!

So maybe not so astonishing that America might not like that idea, and would prefer Russia or China not have such influence over a European country!

Last week China signed some major deals with Argentina. I got a laugh out of it. They have burned just about anyone who has loaned them money, and not only that they'll challenge them in court when the creditors dare to try to collect, evoking national pride movements, paid demonstrators etc. I foretell a strong anti-Asian sentiment in that country 10-15 years from now when China demands they make good on their debts. Probably half the grocery stores in Buenos Aires are run by ethnic Chinese, some families living in the back of their stores. I can see these places being hit with racist graffiti and firebombed when the time comes, poor sots.

Being friendly with Greece means China would have a friend in the eastern Med. Of course Greece will rip them off too.

The lame Ducks are coming home to roost, namely GREECE,SPAIN,PORTUGAL, and IRELAND,who all grew fat on EU money until pay back time,it was'nt hard to predict Bankruptcy.Neither will the next round of defaulters. now let's see? TURKEY,RUMANIA,BULGARIA,hot favourites, who badly need to upgrade their infrastructure, does this sound familiar? with what happened to GREECE, as we all know borrowing is easy, paying back is another story! The EU gravy train feeders never quite understood the overall structure, somebody has got to pay in so the others can draw out, Or as the old saying goes...neither a borrower or a lender be! it's the safest way!

More Suspect defaulters on huge loans!

  10. Dear OP,

    I am an American,

We all see clearly, the problem with people from the UK

first of all, they think their language is English, but in act, derives from "Anglish" and wasn't developed on their cold dreary island.

the second thing, they probably don't know that their Queen is actually German, and a Nazi collaborator.

of course, George Bush's family was too, but they too are born of the same drug dealing, poppy and opium dealing cattle

They likely also do not now that the "city of London" is not a part of England, same as Washington DC is not part of the US, but it is a part of the US Corporation, owned by the Rothschilds, and taken from the US in the Act of 1871

    The reality is,

this doesn't happen in real life and in pubs,

the Brits for the most part, go out of their way to be friendly, in real life, because, most of them, are decent, and share the same goals

    the problem is,

ThaiVisa isn't representative of the over riding population, of any country

    bottom line,

we probably are more attractive to their women,

which, we can live without as,

we drink a lot less, and have a larger pool to choose from,

and, our bodies still work, because, we aren't "pissed" all the time

If that's the best you can do to be a provocative,Troll, you need to sign into the first life changing Tree hugging course that would be stupid enough to take you!

  11. Paying a few Bahts more is worth it for a M&P shop that gives us a little character drinking venue, ice cold Beers, mostly, friendly, pleasant, Farang company, open air drinking, and some will supply a fan,and just sit there and watch the world go by,what more do you need???

  12. tbthailand reply to Post No 178

"Then there is Majic's (essential) denial that the yellow shirts were violent at all. That is incorrect, and it's extremely selective"

You are twisting my words! I never denied that the Yellow shirts were violent at all,my qualifying word was "Relatively" which meant : compared to the Red Shirts,as well you know! and there was no (essential) denial from me as you wrongly claimed, those that replied to my Post had no problem understanding my words, so I fail to see why you have chosen to misinterpret my Post!

Please be aware I do not propose to engage in drawn out waste of time, convoluted arguments!

  13. What is next ?

Anyway.....it certainly seems that many Americans and British have one thing in common.......thinking that they, and ao their countries set up, are the centre of the world.....one can only wonder.....

    That's because they are! thumbsup.gif

There wouldn't be a "free" developed world without the good'ole US and Britain.

Depending on where you're from you'd be speaking German, Japanese or Russian if it wasn't for American and British resolve and sacrifice.

How very true, unfortunately there are large numbers of people with very short memories! thankfully in the UK we always have our rememberence days, for all those, that gave their lives in Europe for us,AND without the help of Americans, and their huge loss of life,Europe would not have the freedom, they enjoy now! and undoubtedly Europe and the UK would have lost WW2.

You need a history lesson mate, "huge loss of life"? tell that to Russia.

I didn't say which country suffered the most deaths or casualties!

  14. In my experience, finances rather than anything else will dictate where most end up.

I include Health in that as that is closely linked to finances too. If you have (regretably) an accident or illness the possible financial implications could and does wipe peoples resources out.

That's usually when they start to head for the "home country". Then it becomes a case of not what you "want" but what is the reality of the situation and what is practical.

Going back home, at least to the UK isn't a matter of 'choice' it is a matter of' 'fact'. It is not as simple as some on here would like to think. Here are a couple of points:

1: You DO NOT automatically qualify for health care (except emergencies.

2: In order to register with a GP and get some treatments, you have to be living back there for 6 months.

3: You have to PROVE you are back for good.

4: If you are financially impaired, you will have a long wait to get accomodation.

There is a lot more, I have researched quite a bit, and just received the following from the NHS:

....Those persons in receipt of UK state pensions who choose to live in another country, either permanently or for more than six months each year on a regular basis, can receive, free of charge, any hospital treatment the need for which arises while they are staying in the UK, as long as they previously lived here for at least ten continuous years. This would include if they fell ill or were injured while on a visit here, or if they needed urgent treatment of a pre-existing condition. However, it would not include pre-planned treatment or routine treatment of a pre-existing condition.. . . .

Read the last but carefully, they also went on the say that the 'Free Treatment' that Expats can receive "Is under review" and will be changed - very ominous. GHood luck to all, who may need help - like myself.

I'm not going to go into the details, forget what you have heard,go back to blighty, and sure there is not quite the open door system (and we all know why) But you are British, you will not be turned away, from the NHS,the Social Services,Your GP,the Housing System.I don't see anyone living on the streets where I live,so don't believe all you hear!................Your Passport still means something!
