PM Srettha calls for innovative ASEAN-GCC partnership
bradiston replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I'm actually impressed! He's had the ear of Putin and Xi, and they seem prepared to give him the time of day. He's made a speech at the UN, and generally put himself about, so he is by now probably a familiar face on the international scene. His endeavours at attracting inward investment for several mega projects - high speed rail from the North and the East West land bridge - could make an incalculable difference to the Thai economy. Ok, so it's Belt and Road, but he at least has some financial savvy having run Sansiri, so will hopefully bring an astute business sense to the negotiating table. We might hate him for the post election shanannigans, but it has to be time to move on. He seems at home with the Chinese, having a lot of connections in his family background. Maybe he even speaks Mandarin? Anyway, that's my 2¢. I wonder how Pita would have performed in the same set of circumstances? -
"In 1948, more than 700,000 Palestinian Arabs – about half of prewar Mandatory Palestine's Arab population – fled from their homes or were expelled by Zionist militias[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] during the 1948 Palestine war.[9] The exodus was a central component of the fracturing, dispossession and displacement of Palestinian society, known as the Nakba.[10][11] Between 400 and 600 Palestinian villages were destroyed. Village wells were poisoned in a biological warfare programme and properties were looted to prevent Palestinian refugees from returning.[12][13] Other sites were subject to Hebraization of Palestinian place names.[14] The terms also refer to the wider period of war itself and the subsequent, ongoing oppression.[15]" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_Palestinian_expulsion_and_flight "As of April 1, 1945, Jews had acquired 5.67% of the land in Palestine." Hardly a majority holding, was it? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_land_purchase_in_Palestine#:~:text=Jewish land purchase in Palestine was the acquisition of land,of the land in Palestine. The Palestinians in Jordan/Egypt/Syria are mostly refugees from Palestine. They didn't originate there. "The arabs have zero claim to those lands. Period." Outrageous. Palestinians (Arabic: الفلسطينيون, al-Filasṭīniyyūn; Hebrew: פָלַסְטִינִים, Fālasṭīnīm) or Palestinian people (الشعب الفلسطيني, ash-sha‘b al-Filasṭīnī), also referred to as Palestinian Arabs (العرب الفلسطينيون, al-ʿArab al-Filasṭīniyyūn), are an Arab[30][31] ethnonational group[32][33][34][35][36][37][38] descending from people who have inhabited the region of Palestine over the millennia." https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinians "Over the millennia"? A little more than 100 years, I think.

Yes, it's true. I never met a Filipino/Filipina who complained about their lot in life. They just got on with it. 10 kids and still smiling. When I asked them why they continued to have kids, they just laughed and said big families are good! Plus, I guess the absence of contraception might play a part.

Nowhere to go? Do me a favour. It's the Palestinians, and in particular, Gazans, who have nowhere to go. Israelis come and go as they please in almost every country in the world. And how many times have they abandoned their lands and set off for pastures new? Only to return and claim the whole place as theirs and theirs alone.

The Philippines brand of Catholicism relies 100% on keeping the poor (90% of the population) in a state of profound and utter ignorance. It's simply feudal. Ever see a padre out on the street in Philippines? I never did once. Nuns you might see. But the rotten corrupt catholic church... What hope is there?

Is there an emergency fix centre for withdrawals? -
I get it on Satanta when there's no rugby, but the seasons over now. Yeah, ditto total sports. It's probably all the same feed. Just bundled and sold on.

I'm in Pratamnak so not sure it's relevant, but I'm on Sophon. It's ok. It has a good Eurosport feed (no ads), my must have for cycling and lots of other sport not covered by most channels. It has Setanta for rugby, and a lot of punch up channels, you know, silly buggers in tights, but also boxing and Muay Thai, a really good mostly live Golf channel, CNBC I think, and a variety of other sports feeds, Aussie rules when in season. It has numerous movie channels, quite a mix of Chinese, Thai and Western. For news, there's Bloomberg, Al Jazeera, DW, CNA, Fux and the Chinese ones, France 24 all in English. Dutch, BVN and Italian, Rai too. Once you've figured out where your channels are, it's not bad at all. But you must have a digital TV. Ok, sounds kind of weird in this day and age, but you lose over 100 digital channels without one. Can't remember what I pay, but it's not a lot.

Rents haven't peaked. They're set to increase on an annual basis. I came here during covid which of course totally distorted the market, or so we all thought. I started off paying 5k pm in a friend's guesthouse on lengkee. Then 5500 in Pratamnak for a decent 1 bedder. That went to 8 after a year, and was going to 11 this year. Doubled in 2 years. Ok, covid's space/time warp in full flow. But I projected it would probably plateau out at 15 in a couple of years. The agent agreed. 180,000 pa. So, if you can find a habitable spot, and there's lots of them in Pattaya/Jomtien, for a million or so, why go chasing that penthouse in the sky? Resell value after maybe 5 years might not be what you paid for it, but you should get back maybe 75% of your outlay. So it's cost you 250,000 in depreciation, but you've saved around 750,000 on rent. Course, YMMV! As could mine, also ????.

And his mother is his sister? And his grandfather his father? It's too difficult to comprehend what effect it might have on the poor lad. Where will he turn for support? How can anyone explain to him what has happened? How will he make any sense of it? Maybe in later years, ok. These things happen etc etc. But, maybe here in Thailand, as you say, it's not that uncommon, so my moralising won't apply.

I just bought a 35.7 sq m ground floor studio flat in an old condo, about 30 years old, for 900k THB, in Soi 6 Pratamnak, maybe 400m from the sea, spa and shops etc in Soi 5, Haad Dong Tan etc. £20k. It'll hopefully see me out. I had to put it in my Thai daughter's name as the quota was full. Still, she wasn't complaining!
