Two pieces of advice I would give to any visitor
1). Don't use the "mini van" transport
2). Don't use these ferries to the Islands. Or for that matter. "anywhere"
General ThaiVisa member advice appears to be don't come to Thailand at all.
Though those that give such advice with their continual moaning and whining and still choose to live here by choice ( Those that actually do live in Thailand that is, I suspect most don't), shows that Thailand has faults the same as everywhere else, but it ain't as bad as forums like this one make it out to be, else they wouldn't be here themselves would they.
My goodness, 16 posts for the rose-coloured specs brigade to chime in. Must be something of a record.
I've lived in Pattaya for a good many years now, love the place and wouldn't live anywhere else, but c'mon, criticism where it's due. Two ferry sinkings in a short space of time, doesn't it deserve just a little whinge? Throw in the speedboat crashes as well and that's a fair bit of shipping headed for the bottom of the bay. Don't even get me started on the bus crashes.
You did realize Thailand is a developing nation before you chose to move here I take it, yet you seem so amazed when the country has developing nation problems.
You could always go to live in Tokyo, Singapore, Geneva, Monaco or places of that ilk, ah but wait a minute, they are too expensive for you, go back home, no it's too boring and the weather is cr-ap , so a developing country it is then, but expect developing country problems.
I've also lived here a good many years, since 1990 in fact, you think it's bad now, jeeez, you'd have wondered what planet you were on in 1990.

I am one of those who do live here and yes Thailand has it's faults but it is by far in a class of it's own. This is a very dangerous country in many aspects and little is done to improve on safety standards in just about everything and there will be very little progress in this for years to come owing to the culture. Those that fail to realize this are truly in denial
Yet you still choose to live here with all your knowledge, are you a masochist ?

...there is always more than meets the eye of the beholder in the Kingdom. We are looking at less than 2% of what really occurred. This whole subject is best left alone.
Chances are high this is not her first, nor last brush with destiny and motor vehicles.
Stay tuned....
Why would you say that, what do you know about her past and future ?
She's a young girl who had an accident and was extremely lucky not to get burnt to death, yet here is an idiotic post judging her past and future, be thankful it's wasn't your Daughter,

Lights on is only for VIP's, Police and Emergency vehicles.
When I drive on the mountain road coming from Pattaya to Korat, my lights are on no matter what time of day or night, my life is considered to be important to me, I know they've made improvements to that road, but its still dangerous in places, years ago it was extremely dangerous.
how are the auto makers allowed to sell cars here with DRL's always on then ?
I had an imported Motorcycle years ago, before the law was changed for motorcycles, that had no switch to turn the light off, I was constantly being motioned at traffic lights in Pattaya to turn off my light, but I just shrugged my shoulders or explain to them I couldn't turn them off, I never got fined.
Volvo's I think came under the same consideration, how do people get on with LED lights that are on all the time, has the law changed for all cars now, I have no idea, i'm thinking of getting LED lights on my Tuna, anybody been fined for having them ?

The fine was for being farang, not the roof.
Consider it farang tax.
Next.
And all the Thais that got stopped and fined on the same night, were their fines for being Thai, a Thai Tax ?
Freekin minorities, always playing the " They're all out to get me card ".
You only stopped me cos I'm black is often used in the same way in the UK.

Sat in a top of the range Revo today..... rather have my 9 years old Tuna.

I pay for Business Class, it's expensive, but i have a reasonable experience.
Go Cattle class, expect the worse.

But of course this is ThaiVisa Forum, Farang good, Thai Bad.....most Farangs I know drive home pissed as parrots.
-
Does the average Thai understand the purpose of a safety helmet ?
Does the average Thai understand to ride a motor-bike heavily intoxicated is extremely dangerous ?
Does the average Thai understand basic road sense ?
No No & No
And Farangs never ever drink and drive..........you've been here for a week or 2, if at all ?
-
where are traffic cops every night?
Good question, they could arrest loads of Thais and Hundreds of Farang a week for drink driving if they had regular checkpoints.

I watch football on my TOT that costs less than 800 per month.
Can download movies at over 1000 kbps with enough seeds too, but its my own connection straight to my condo, unshared.

He did show you the book that he had fined some Thai people also.
So why are you complaining?
You did the wrong thing, you were caught and you were fined.
Don't do it again and then you will not have the opportunity to cry on TVF.
I should know better than to reply, but here we go:
I am complaining because, he only started his motorbike to catch the pesky farang, after at least 10 Thai's had committed be same offence right in front of him, without him reacting..........
The names in his book had no relevance to the situation at hand.................
Perhaps he'd already ticketed those Thai's earlier, they only give you one ticket a day, I don't know for all offences, but for helmets it used to be, get stopped again the same day , show the ticket, you're good to go.

Thanks all. Looks like Western Digital is the consensus choice. Am I correct in assuming that if my computer lacks a USB 3 port, then a USB 3 drive gains no advantage?
Correct...USB 3 is just approx 3 to 4 times faster than USB 2 based on "real world" specs. But be sure to still buy a USB 3 drive as USB 3 is backwards compatible to USB 2. That way you can still use it on your current computer with only USB 2 ports, but when you do get a computer with USB 3 ports you will be able to take advantage of the increased speed. Remember, it makes a 3 to 4 times difference in how fast data is within to and from your backup drive...like instead of taking say 1.5 to 2 hours to do a back-up or load an backup image it will do it in around 30 minutes....the difference between 30 minutes and 2 hours when staring at a computer screen can seem like years.
Or 90 minutes.
But I know what you mean.

My latest 2Tb Seagate is half the size of the old 1Tb
I had bad experiences with WD a few years ago,
replaced under guarantee then failed again
I never did trust the second replacement
I friend recommended a Buffalo disk, but when I got it home I found it was WD inside
I was just about to say the same thing about Buffalo, they use a variety of disks it appears, I had one go wonky, I'm sure mine was seagate inside, lol. Just had to replace the case, not the drive in that instance
.
But I have a lot of Buffalo, some bought in Thailand others in Japan, they are ok in general.
Big seller in Japan.

I had Black friends like that in the UK, always bleating on about the cops only stopped them because they where Black, how about when they stopped me, was it because I was white ?
Loads of Thais get stopped for motoring offences everyday, in fact if you go on a Highway up country you're less likely to get stopped for a spot check and have your car searched simply because you're a Farang, The Thais have a much tougher time with the cops, we get away with a lot.

There is no space in the mail settings for G Mail password.
But when you make a new Google account, then you put the password in and its remembered.
Google = One Google account for everything Google.

Very interesting. For any folks who do use Qihoo 360 since the article talks a setting in Qihoo 360 where you selected the "detection engine" to use, can you select the Qihoo Detection Engine "and" Bitdefender Detection Engine, both at the same time? Or you can select only one detection engine, not both at the same time?
If you can only select one detection engine at a time and assuming the Bitdefender engine is the best, then a person would just be better off using using the free Bitdefender software (which is what I use on one of my computers).
In the below Qihoo statement is says "multiple" engines can be selected. Would be nice for one of you users of Qihoo 360 can confirm.
I expect the more engines you can possibly turn-on the more CPU power is utilized which is less CPU power to use on running your other software. If so and if it did slow down my computer noticeably by running multiple detection engines, I think I would only want to be running one detection engine at a time...which engine to turn on?....well, for me it would be which ever one is considered the best.
Regarding the "can multiple detection engines be turned on on once" I just found the answer in a another ThaiVisa thread/post by Banzai99 on Ramsonware. Link.
The answer is yes, but I still wonder how much of a CPU performance hit that extracts when running multiple detection engines?
Hi Pib,
No noticeable difference, my last boot time was 24 seconds, windows 8.1, my setting is the highest one, Security, all engines active, CPU 1 - 2 % Ram 207 mb it doesn't affect my Desktop or Laptop running intel i3 & 4gb Ram and Intel i7 & 8gb Ram respectively, as noted there is a balanced setting as well as a Performance setting for those that have less Ram.
And you have a custom setting you can turn off either Avira or the Bitdefender engine or both.
-
I think a lot of Pay for Anti Virus companies are involved in this default settings saga , Qihoo get great results, simply configure to Security, its 2 clicks of a mouse.
-
DLang, I'm using Qihoo 360 total Security, as well as its own engines, it uses Avira's and Bitdefenders engines if you select security mode, best thing about it is, it's free.
I can't see Eset being any better at detection than 360 using so many virus databases and cloud based protection, in fact I was using Eset Smart Security but I accidently uninstalled it from my Desktop pc, and of course I'd thrown away the disk and code that I got when I bought it.
So after a bit of research I downloaded Qihoo 360 and am more than pleased with it.
360 just got disqualified and stripped of all previous awarded certificates by a leading consumer testing company AV-test because they obviously provided to them tuned software in order to reach better test results. Well it's china I changed to panda today
Interesting. My 360 version still updates the database for the Bitdefender engine. Seems odd if it doesn't actually use it as well as the other two engines.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2422024,00.asp
Maybe I'll have a look at Panda...
It does use the Bit Defender and Avira engines, they are just not turned on by default, you have to configure to a higher setting, the default setting is for Balanced and Bitdefender and Avira are not enabled, simply configure to Security, and they are.
