Electric Vehicles in Thailand
Bandersnatch replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Hello @RocketDog thanks for coming to visit. You are replying to a post from April 2022 so not sure if @steve187 got his questioned answered, but both MG and GWM have EV chargers at all their showrooms which are in just about every province now. They both offer free wall chargers with free installation. The condo issue we have discussed elsewhere and I would acknowledge that it is taking too long to get resolved but as most people only drive about 50km per day so a 30 minute stop for coffee or shopping and charge would easily cover a week’s driving. -

“I didn’t buy this toaster and have never even seen one in person, but I’ve chosen to give it a 1 star review as I think toasting under the grill is better” “In July 2024, one in seven vehicles sold globally was fully electric, with electric vehicles (EVs) accounting for 14.9% of total vehicle sales worldwide.” https://www.edie.net/one-in-seven-new-cars-worldwide-is-now-electric/ If you want more information about EVs, you could do worse than check out my discussion: https://aseannow.com/topic/1257405-electric-vehicles-in-thailand at over 8,000 replies there is lots to get into. I would also recommend a test drive. I might be a bit biased here but I would suggest you try my latest EV the BYD Seal AWD Performance, @JBChiangRai has one as well as do several other regular contributors to EVs in Thailand. -

Can I remind you that you posted: “Higher initial cost, high maintenance costs, poor battery life and expensive replacements, and limited charging locations are a reality” Higher cost I have addressed already as well as “limited charging locations” My MG came with 5 years of completely free servicing (parts and labour) my BYD came with 8 years. My BYD has 8 years 160,000km warranty guaranteed to have at least 70% battery capacity. My house is 100% off-grid (no meter) and I can power my house, 2 EVs and electric motorbike from my solar. My BYD has bi-directional charging giving me over 6 Tesla PowerWalls of extra backup power. You are welcome to your opinions but you are not welcome to your own facts. There is too much disinformation posted about EVs and green technology by people that have no direct experience, yet they try to pass themselves off as experts. I will continue to call out disinformation where I see it. -

As I was planning to go fully off-grid in my build I did research DC aircons, I didn’t see hybrids available in Thailand at the time. My conclusion was it was better to pool my solar PV and use it where it was needed, otherwise you could have panels paired with an aircon in a guest bedroom that was rarely used. AC aircons in Thailand are cheap and you can buy them anywhere. DC aircons were very expensive and it just need one gecko!

The most simple and also most expensive option that I know is to buy a power station like an Ecoflow and then plug in their panels. You can then plug stuff in like it was a generator Shop on shopee https://th.shp.ee/NraEZrg

If I wanted advice about iPhones I would ask someone who only used Android, that is obvious. You claim that an EV is an "unwise purchasing practice" yet you have no have direct experience to support your premise. I have refuted your arguments against owning an EV in Thailand were this forum is based. EV chargers here in Thailand have been installed recently so they tend to be modern 150kW types which may not be the case in other countries. Legacy auto manufactures are late to the party and their products can't compete. Case in point Toyota, who has sold only 66 EVs in Thailand this year, all in January and none since. BYD has sold 17,396. Total vehicle sales (ICE + EVs) in Thailand in July was down 20.6% YOY https://www.marklines.com/en/statistics/flash_sales/automotive-sales-in-thailand-by-month EV sales on the other hand were up over 13% YOY -

When I first met my wife’s family their only form of transport was an old Scoopy that they had bought on an interest only finance deal. The thing was falling to bits but they still owed the original price of the bike. I cleared the outstanding debt and bought them a new Wave. A few years later they started to borrow our Click and only return it when it was empty. I asked why and was told they didn’t like the kick start on the Wave as they were getting old. I gave them our Click and bought an electric bike which they also borrowed but at least when it cames back empty it’s free and easy to charge. Looks like I will be buying them an electric bike soon 🙄 -

2 years ago we gave our Honda Click to the family and bought a ฿30k 1,000W Deco Hannah. I occasional use it and it's great fun. This morning someone parked the Click blocking my BYD and I had to push it out of the way. I had forgotten how heavy and ungainly it was after the Hannah. -

Based on the many comments I see, most people see Chinese EV companies as startups with a slim chance of survival. As usual, most of the opinions are not based on data In July BYD was the third best selling brand in the world and the rate that VW are closing down factories, they will soon be #2 -

All this is true, but life is short and if we keep putting off buying that EV while we wait for the better one to come along we will be missing out. Back in 2019 I put down a deposit on a ฿1.2m 44.5kWh MG ZS EV, ultimately the deal fell through as they wouldn’t install the free wall charger for someone with solar. If I had waited until today I would have missed out on 5 years of EV ownership. About a year a go a number of contributors to this discussion, including myself, were considering the BYD Seal. At the time I made a post about buyer’s remorse. Buying a car is as much an emotional as it is an intellectual decision and looking back I do not regret my decision to buy a BYD Seal AWD. I had a clear shopping list for a car at the time 1) Price ideally under ฿1.5m 2) V2L 3) LFP batteries over 70kWh 4) Dealership support close by 5) A big name company that was unlikely to go bust in a few years 6) Wife approval (happy wife, happy life) - I am fortunate that my wife is also into EVs and is often my source of the latest Thai EV news Then I wanted a test drive I have enjoyed driving my Seal and it still puts a smile on my face. Will there be a better car coming along soon? Of course, but I intend to keep my seal for a few more years yet and by then EVs will be even better.
