Just putting this already deflected discussion into context. This is a discussion about the discovery of Li in Thailand, which is a good thing, but it has been deflected by the EV haters into EVs are no good in the cold. Most of the posters clearly don’t even live in Thailand as there are more interested in talking about Heat Pumps now!
I actually live in Thailand and drive EVs in Thailand so just wanted to explain to our overseas visitors that temperature here does not effect range or charging, but maybe that’s because my EV has a heat pump :)

Vehicles with white license plates, black letters, or personal vehicles with no more than 7 seats, such as sedans, SUVs, and 4-door pickup trucks, will use the tax calculation method that depends on engine size (CC) as follows.
- 1-600 cc / charge 0.5 baht per cc.
- 601-1,800 cc / charge 1.5 baht per cc.
- 1,801 cc or more / charge 4 baht per cc
4 door Ford Ranger 2.0 bi turbo engine size 1996cc road tax should be B2,880
if you have a 3.0 litre or 3.2 litre engine then the road tax will be more
So why are online links suggesting you can pay up to ฿8,000?

4,500 posts and counting. The most replies for any discussion in the Thailand Motor Section and second most views after a discussion started in 2011.
Somehow we have been able to keep this discussion broadly on-topic.
EVs seems to create a great deal of interest from advocates but probably more so from EV critics - something I have never really understood.

Lots of electrical issues, cars that won't even start, and mileages that are well below predictions due to batteries fading out in the low temps.
Winter this year in North East Thailand was bitter it got down into the high teens degrees C at one point, but strangely had no effect on my EV charging or my EV’s range.

Tesla Model 3 starts at ฿1,599,000 for the base model, the performance model will be over ฿2,000,000. You have to pay extra for paint colour, you don’t get a free wall charger with free installation, free servicing or cheap finance.
The extras with a BYD seal are worth ฿230,000

Best to check your facts before posting.
I purchased a BYD Seal AWD Performance and it was cheaper than the cheapest Tesla you can buy in Thailand.
13 hours ago, FruitPudding said:So, you would choose a BYD over a similar model of Tesla, if they were the same price?
Yes, all BYDs come with LFP batteries which are much safer, longer lasting and with none of that nasty cobalt that that you get in LR and Performance Teslas.
BYD has 100 dealerships in Thailand with plans for another 200 by the end of 2025. Tesla has only one.
BYD will start manufacturing EVs and spare parts in Thailand this year
My BYD Seal comes with bi-directional charging and the equivalent of 6 Tesla PowerWalls of backup power which I use to power my home - you can’t do that with a Tesla

This is why we can never have an intelligent debate with EV haters - they are not interest in the facts.

Can’t stretch to the Eletre R but was disappointed that the Eletre S only does 0-100kmh in 4.5seconds, think I’ll stick to my Seal Performance.

Now I've charging 2 EVs at home, I've made a few tweaks to my solar system.
If you have an EV in Thailand or are considering one, I strongly recommend getting solar as well.

Also given I was thinking at running a 300W Sub Pump, on it's own, for only 1 hour or so every 2 or 3 days
so you probably won’t get it ever running at 100% efficiency, but sounds like that won’t be a problem for youas you can run it for longer and less efficiently. The only way to be sure is to try it and it will only cost you the switch and some cable.
4 hours ago, dinga said:so I'm now thinking it might be easier to forget about solar and just get a 220V Jet Pump....
Easy to work out the cost of power used.
One factor I have discovered is submersible pumps seem to last longer as they are not in the heat all day and you don’t have a problem with ants setting up home inside. I have 4 submersible pumps and never had a single problem, can’t say the same for my surface pumps.-

Well there you go, consider me educated. For some reason I always had it down as a low end vehicle, seems I was wrong - that looks nice inside. I also didn't know it was that speedy and had such a good electric capacity.
Thanks for the info.

I think MG tried very hard to show they were not just a budget brand and wanted to be taken seriously.

Is it feasible for the Sub Pump and the Fountain to separately be powered by the single Solar Panel? Are there any limitations?
I have a solar well pump and pump from a pond sharing solar panels with a switch to swap between them.if you have a 300w pump and 300w panel then most of the time you won’t have enough power to run the pump, so probably best to add another panel
On 1/15/2024 at 6:50 PM, dinga said:Does the 40 metre cable length between the Sub Pump and the Solar Panel pose any problems? [perhaps Voltage/Power drop-off etc...]
we ended up moving our panels away from the pond pump and closer to the submersible pump as it was having to work harder bringing the water up.On 1/15/2024 at 6:50 PM, dinga said:3. Assume I need a 3-way switch at the Solar Panel to allow selection of the following settings: (a) Power Off; (b) Fountain On; (c) Sub Pump On. If this is correct, where can I purchase the switch? (I can't see them on Lazada - is there a special name to cater for the solar power connections?)
A DC transfer switch which you should be able to buy from your local pump shopOn 1/15/2024 at 6:50 PM, dinga said:4. I have (I think) a 120 Mesh 3/4inch in-line Disc Filter that I'm thinking about installing on the main line at the head of the bore. Should this filter be sufficient to separate any fine particles in order to prevent any clogging of the drippers/micro sprinklers? Regardless of the filter used, should I still anticipate regular clogging - especially by bugs & ants??
i don’t use a filter with my drip irrigation but I don’t have any fine spray heads-

I would agree that makes sense. In its current guise it is not an attractive car (for me), even with the discount. But also agree it is great for the consumer - long may it continue as we have never seen this price competition before in Thailand.
I would definitely recommend taking it for a test drive before writing it off. This was MGs top end car designed to compete with the Honda CRV. It is a luxury car packed with features and a 0-100kph of 6.9 seconds.I’ve owned one for over 2 years. It’s 70km EV only range is enough for most of our local trips.
We own a Seal Performance as well, but we have no plans to sell the HS as we have 5 dogs and a baby.

regarding the discussion about Kwh, 1 liter of diesel has 12.7 Kwh in theory, and the diesel engine is highly efficient at around 40-45%, so that would net about 5Kwh per liter.
5 Kwh x 60 (assuming full tank) = 300 Kwh, again, in theory, I'm unsure how much gets lost in the car's electric plant
I couldn’t find anything on diesel trucks efficiency at producing electricity, but a diesel generator would be way more efficient as they are designed for that specific purpose. So your figures above are way out.
“A general rule of thumb is that a diesel generator will use 0.4 L of diesel per kWh produced”

but disaster strikes unannounced.
This is fossil thinking, you have to drive to the filling station to fill up, so most ice drivers only fill up when their vehicle is nearly empty.
1 hour ago, tgw said:most people won't have a solar home to charge their EV without a grid.
You would be surprised just how many EV owners on this forum also have solar. It’s something we talk about a lot. After all it’s only logical to have solar once you have an EV. My EV is always fully charged as I charge it every day (Use it or Lose it)

I started this discussion to inject some facts into the “debate” about EVs. The facts are that here in Thailand EVs are the fastest growing class of vehicles. (Link posted in my OP) over 25% of vehicles sold last month in Thailand were full EVs. That makes Thailand one fastest growing market for EVs in the world.
By comparison “Sales of pickups fell 42% in 2022, in 2023 they fell again by 35%”
The EV haters are quick to claim that EV growth has stalled but that is not true. The posts in this discussion reveal the “I’m not an EV hater but..” types have a very poor grasp of the facts and are happy to lie. You very rarely see them use citations to support their arguments (understandable as it’s difficult finding legitimate sources to support a lie)
There are plenty of EV owners online here who are happy to share their experiences owning an EV in Thailand, both the good and the bad. Why would anybody listen instead to an EV hater who rants on about the evils of Lithium at the same time posting links to Cobalt mining
Having a “debate” with an EV ultracrepidarian is like playing chess with a pigeon that knocks over all the pieces, poops on the board and then struts around like he won the game.

thanks for the detailed information!
have you asked the workshop after how many years the PPF needs to be replaced?
This the quotation I got180 micron 3yr warranty 6 monthly inspection and full polish
฿28,000 - front half of the car not glasss roof
฿56,000 - whole car not glass roof plus interior trim190 micron 4yr warranty 6 monthly inspection and full polish
฿38,000 - front half of the car not glasss roof
฿63,000 - whole car not glass roof plus interior trimThey didn’t say when it needed to be replaced, just “up to you”
the cheapest option would be PPF on the plastic nose and rear sections, but I haven’t found a company that offers that.
still not sure what route to take yet

You clearly know nothing about EVs and you fail to retain any new information explained to you by patient EV owners.
There is no hope for you so I won’t waste anymore time on you.
